A great place to settle down. A terrible place to advance

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Nashua, NH

ProsThe people at OPNET are extremely kind and well mannered. The office forms a community that extends far outside of the office. Also, the pay is pretty good and the job is pretty much guaranteed if you meet the qualifications. I think OPNET provides a good opportunity to start a family and settle down in a nice area.

ConsIf you're trying to advance your career in software, don't work at OPNET. There are few opportunities for promotion because of the relatively slow growth of the company. Also, you'll end up working on a small piece of a giant enterprise package with the intention that you specialize in that area.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to create opportunities for promotion. The average age of your employees is very high and can discourage younger people from working there.

    Good company to work for

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) Bethesda, MD

ProsExcellent work-life balance, diverse portfolio of products, many opportunities etc.

ConsThere are multiple management layers, and some teams work on emerging technologies while some others are relegated to maintaining legacy products on outdated code base. Do your research before joining the company.

ConsAcquisition focus ruined the entrepreneurial culture.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't sell out.

    Developer at OPNET

Information Systems Engineer (Current Employee) Bethesda, MD

ProsLow stress except for maybe one or two weeks out of the year. Flexible hours. Compensation is fair. Office location is excellent, near several restaurants and close to metro. Relatively flat management hierarchy (although this may not stay the case after the acquisition). Employee retention is good.

ConsNot many additional benefits or perks. When the CEO/CTO tell you to do something, there's not much room for argument.

The work environment is extremely healthy and you feel motivated

    (Former Employee) Bethesda, MD

ProsThe is a perfect place for a beginner. You get to learn a lot of best practices in the industry.Everyone is easily approachable and very much willing to help you in your work.

ConsGiven the small size of the company, the growth can be slow.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management has been doing a decent job. However, the compensation package is definitely low compared to the high cost of living.

    Software engineering intern position

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe management was really helpful and understanding throughout the internship. I should mention my mentor who was truly supportive and cooperative in project work. I learnt a lot about software development, OOP concepts, coding ethics from him.

ConsI could not find any cons during my summer internship.

    Great place to learn

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Proslearning a lot about entire IT ecosystem. always open door policy that encourages learning of products and sw and wetworks in general

Conslittle marketing support, or messaging that resonates - constantly have to craft your own - pay is a bit lower than market, but company is not overly oppressive as some have noted - so long as you are performing. issues here are no larger than any issues you may face elsewhere.

Advice to Senior Managementclearly doing well as a company -- a bit more foresight in leveraging sales enablement tools would be helpful.
