    Great Engineering Company

Reservoir Engineer (Current Employee) Houston, TX

ProsGreat employees, reasonable bosses that care about employees and try to grow their potential. Aggressive company allows new employees to gain experience at a very rapid rate.

ConsReserves has become an endless array of PowerPoint documentations and spreadsheets. It takes away valuable time with doing what's really important, which is finding more oil/gas. Also, hard to take vacation given such a heavy workload/responsibilities.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry not too ask employees to run every scenario/case that you can think of...we only have so many hours in the day. Also, we need time to take vacation- at least 2 wks a year.

Occidental is a great workplace environment and conducive for career advancement.

    GeoTech (Former Employee) McAllen, TX

ProsGreat workplace environment, smart and able employees and managers. Upper level managment has understanding of geologic and engineering issues making communication easy. Very personable people to work with.

ConsCommunication between field office and main office in Houston was slow sometimes. Occasionally took a day or two to receive further instruction after finishing specified assignment.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to advance employees with science backgrounds and understanding of the science behind drilling.

    A great MIS internship experience

MIS Intern (Former Employee) Houston, TX

ProsThe internship includes great housing and a very nice salary. There are mentors and many networking events. You are not encouraged to work more than 40 hours a week.

ConsSome of the intern projects were not organised well. This effects an interns ability to showcase skills and an ability to adapt and learn.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure internship projects are organized well before the interns arrive.

A great company and employees with a challenging culture for non-technical employees.

    Manager (Former Employee)

ProsGood benefits, salary, workplace policies and people. A safe and conscientious company with a great record and respect for stakeholders.

ConsCorporate culture is adverse to pro-active public measures. Staffing is lean for achieving company expectations. Little or no on-boarding and little or no feedback about performance. Employees are fired or denied promotion without explanation.

Advice to Senior ManagementCorporate senior management in non-technical departments does not always understand or value the responsibilities of employees at the business unit level and should visit field offices more often and give more feedback.

Fast Pace- If you're lazy you will fail here

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsHard to find a large oil company like this that doesn't have a lot of bureaucracy in order to make things happen. If you have an idea or solution that cuts cost or improves the business- you can make it happen here. 9/80s, good benefits, decent bonus program.

ConsWay understaffed for the results expected of its employees. Pay is ok; HR targets 50th percentile. Work/Life balance depends on what group you are in. Some managers really support the 9/80, while others will expect you to work your Friday off or stay late.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou can't make things happen quickly and stay in compliance with policies. Choose one or the other. Policies should be a guideline, not a rule. Some managers/supervisors are policy driven and forget what funds their paycheck- Its O&G Production! Not 100% compliance with policies.

    ProsGood overall bonus program.

    Large company with 9/80 schedule.

    ConsHard to move up.

Does not have many offices in locations that a nice to visit.

    No Fitness center.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote within and stop hiring from outside. Retain talent by training and developing internally.

    Pretty good place to intern

IT Intern (Former Employee) Houston, TX

ProsHad an awesome mentor, pays very well and includes company-provided housing. A few good social events (Schlitterbahn, baseball game, Dave and Busters). We presented to the CIO at the end of the summer. The culture is pretty laid back, and I wasn't afraid of asking for help. The underground parking and on site food court was nice.

ConsI felt like the IT interns weren't treated as well as the other interns. Only a few of us got full time offers while nearly all engineering interns received offers. We also weren't able to participate in as many social events as the others (rock climbing, skydiving). Some of the IT interns didn't have very exciting projects.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat the IT interns the same as the other interns.
