I worked at Office Depot part-time for more than a year

    Pros

good to see into the retail world and see what its all about. learned very basic sales strategies, and not very good teamwork.

    Cons

long hours, minimal pay, no benefits, minimal instruction. many of their add on products were far over priced, and their computer scan seemed to be full of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

care about your employees, don't look at them as labor monkeys

    Company in big change

Current Employee - Territory Development Manager in Indianapolis, IN

I have been working at Office Depot full-time

    Pros

Company offers a lot of benefits to their employees.

    Cons

Management style leaves a lot t be desired. It is hard to get help with accounts when you need it. You have to go to many different people to get things done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Business Services area needs to be more in touch with the reps. Needs to be a better job of getting the assigned quotas/goals out in a timely manner. 2014 goal did not come out until August.

Overall a good company, but the facility I worked at was poorly managed.

I worked at Office Depot full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Not much positive to say. But I should make clear that my opinion is based mostly on my experience working for one facility of a very large corporation. I worked at a distribution center, so I can't speak to working at a store.

    Cons

Benifits are below average, particularly paid time off.
First line managers are treated like dirt; witnessed borderline abuse. Minimum of 50 hours per week is an expectation for first line managers.
Expectations in relation to staffing level is not realistic.

I worked at Office Depot part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great coworkers, the managers were great for the most part, and the company is very customer focused and cares about its employees for the most part.

    Cons

the internal technology is slow, even though the company sells technology, customers would basically get anything for free if they had a complaint just so they didn't give a bad review for the store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    none at the moment

Current Employee - Assistant Store Manager in West Hartford, CT

I have been working at Office Depot full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Customer Service is really important. Priorities change depending who is in charge above the DM. One moment it will be services, member rewards, surveys. Store to store can be vastly different depending on the management team.

    Cons

DMs don't know what is going on store to store before it is too late. Everyone gets away with murder because they can. Products come and go, like throwing spaghetti at the wall with what they want to sell.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't chase Staples' tail because they are closing stores too. Be bold and different, give the customers what they want and need. Don't try to be Best Buy either.

I worked at Office Depot full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

great bonus potential, customer service focused, room to grow with the company, fast paced environment, company constantly changing to stay ahead in the office supply industry; good corporate support

    Cons

micro-managed by DM, long hours, very limited payroll budget, training program needs work, LP department does not support the stores

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

work on training program; work on a true work/life balance, LP department needs to focus more on controlling shrink than for basic operational standards

I have been working at Office Depot part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

learn great people skills from a variety of tasks and jobs assigned throughout the store

    Cons

pay is horrible for all the work required, discourages employees from performing. 25 hr max and working 5 days out of the week is stupid for part timers. understaffed

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

do not micro manage employees it creates a rippled effect throughout the employees. be smarter on how you schedule each person according to the customer flow.

    Pros

Employees in store are cool, managers try to work around school schedules

    Cons

Upper management isn't the greatest, dumb policies

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The stores operate without micro managing them, and not every store is the same. Different rules for different stores

I have been working at Office Depot part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

It's not hard labor. There is a lot to do. You learn to multitask. We use radios for communication with other employees. Commission opportunities. It's a job.

    Cons

The pay is low. You start at minimum wage. Raises come once a year and it's no more than a 3% increase. In 2013, December 25th was the only day that my store was closed. Copy and Print associates do a lot of work and deal with customers in droves but they make the same as everyone else with far fewer opportunities to make commission because they don't have the opportunity to sell tech services and replacement plans.
