I have been working at Office Depot full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

its a company you work for that puts a pay check in your pocket and the end of the week

    Cons

no pride in work ethic, no leadership, most of the people are just plain stupid and have no business running a store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

take time finding good people that take ownership in there work rather than dead beats that will mess up everyone that works there

I have been working at Office Depot part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible schedules, laid back management, You can pretty much do whatever you want here and they won't fire you unless of course you steal. I worked with people that would just not show up, no call no shows, leave early from their shifts, take extra long breaks, work at a snails pace and the Store Manager would never reprimand them. You pretty much have to be caught right in the act of stealing to be fired from this place. Great place to work if you do not have high expectations.

    Cons

Since the merger with Office Max things change constantly. Sometime daily. Bonus structures are all over the place. They refuse to reward the top performers. They refuse to carry Apple products so therefore the computer section is always dead. You'll be lucky if you sell 2 computers a day out of 3 customers that walk over. Pretty much the only thing keeping these stores alive is ink sales and school supplies. The customers pretty much call the shots at the stores. Management are so scared of getting a bad review and lowering their score they will pretty much let customers get away with murder. I once saw a customer bring in literally a 10 year old printer that looked like it had been collecting dust in the garage for a decade that was so old we didn't even carry the ink for it anymore and since he complained that it wasn't working, they gave him a $99 dollar refund credit towards a new computer for fear of him writing a bad review online. The guy pretty much brought in a piece of junk and they swapped it out with a brand new computer. It was actually quite comical. Try that at the Apple Store and see what happens. Its ok to say NO sometimes . A guy once brought in 6 different laptops to exchange within the span of 2 months because he kept getting viruses on them from going on porn sites. I know this because he told me straight up when I tried to fix it the 2nd time. They would just keep swapping out computers for the guy and marking the laptops as defective. How can a company make money like this?? No wonder the stores are losing money. Once again, I'd like to see that guy try that same scam at apple and see if they swap out his macbook pro 6 times over two months. Not gonna happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sell the store to Apple and do things their way. You'll be better off.

    I worked at Office Depot

    Pros

Its a job. It wasn't my dream job, but it was a paycheck. For the most part everyone works as a team and really enjoy each other.

    Cons

If you aren't apart of the cool kids club they typically ignore you while you need help. Most of the normal employees do not like to interact with the seasonal employees. Minimum wage for a daily headache. If you have a family trip planned from before you work there, you may not be able to go based on what they feel is necessary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If someone gets sick don't make them feel worse when they come back to work.

While the working environment was enjoyable, little chance for a raise makes this a poor job for anyone Post High-School

I worked at Office Depot part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Laid back work environment, and relatively simple job requirements. The tasks required were simple and there is enough to keep you fairly busy on any given day.

    Cons

The pay would be good for a High School student but anyone beyond that will find it hard to pay bills with the low wage offered and very little room for upward movement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase your compensation to loyal employees if you find they are irreplaceable.

    Pros

Good salary, good manager. Company was overall a good employer with the exception of how bonus payouts we're tracked and handled.

    Cons

Bonuses were often changed so final payouts were sometimes a mess.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Merger seemed to have issues al many levels. Changed culture of company into a new company.

Flexible scheduling, good hours, low stress, management did a good job at making you feel like you were important to the company

    Cons

    I worked at Office Depot

    Pros

I was employed full-time. I got a paycheck and some bonuses. Some of the co-workers were cool to work with, but this has nothing to do with the company itself, so not really a company pro there. Um, really trying to think of some pros here...yep, at a loss. A job and a paycheck. Sigh.

    Cons

Pay raises are a joke. Advancement/promotions were based on butt-kissing and internal politics. Even though I outperformed the other guy in all sales goals repeatedly, week after week, the other guy was promoted...he kisses butt, ans I do not kiss butt, so if that is the requirement for advancement in the company, then, I quit. So, I quit.

As far as I know, I got lucky getting a full-time gig there when they were still hiring full-timers. Now they mostly hire part-timers to save corporate money.

I was there when they got the bright idea to "fix" people's computers, which I still think is a shady business for an office supply company that doesn't have actual techs working for it to be in, but it makes the corporation money, so be it.

They remind me of Microsoft vs Apple. Staples would be Apple, and Office Depot is Microsoft. Apple is innovative and ahead of and on top of the game, year after year...they lead the market...they are the cool kids. Microsoft is the out-of-synch, awkward dweeb on the scene. Always way late in jumping into the game, and when they do, they do it in the most cheesy and obtrusive way possible. But, they are still around and making tons of corporate money, so be it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Check your egos at the door. Somehow, some way, learn how to be human again...please...that robot tool thing gets old.
