I have been working at OfficeMax

    Pros

The culture is "customer first" and the reputation of the company seems to be very positive in terms of service outside of the company. Vacation is above average (2 weeks to start, up to 4 after 5 years) and days off aren't usually hard to come by. Details (and closures) from big merger with OfficeDepot in 2013 are still being worked out.

    Cons

The pay isn't the greatest and raises are somewhat measly. Also, the career paths are minimal. Ordering system needs to be seriously revamped (not upgraded, just re released so that it makes sense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put some snax in the breakroom. Upgrade ancient register systems. If you add something new, TAKE AWAY the old system or device.

I worked at OfficeMax full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Working at Office Max was very exciting because I was able to interact daily with the public all while offering customer service of the highest caliber as a Sales Specialist. In regards to the team atomosphere, there was never a dull moment because the store morale was always superior.

    Cons

In an effort of improvement, there should be a more centrailized focus on training to ensure new hires have the support and tools needed to perform their job duties with confidence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer an open-door policy so that employees feel free to express any questions or concerns in order to promote a store dynamic that is productive and consistent.

I have been working at OfficeMax

    Pros

Great employees, Great location (right next to the Barclays Center)

    Cons

Sometimes you may get rude customers that think they know it all. Plus you work minimum wage

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more people because it can be low staffed at times and customers notice that too.

I have been working at OfficeMax

    Pros

Great place to work, preferred to promote internally, recognized valuable associates.

    Cons

Merged with Office Depot, many store closures with more to come by end of 2015.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask many questions about the store's lease and p&l to get a feel if your moving into a possible store that will close eventually!

I worked at OfficeMax full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good opportunities for advancement. They invested a lot of time in training the employees who sought it out. This helped give me new knowledge and a solid foundation for future opportunities. The company took an interest in innovative ideas that helped the customer. They viewed the customer as a guest...a very important distinction.

    Cons

Classic corporate structure. Too much emphasis was placed on sales performance numbers. After the Boise-Cascade merger, much of the performance bonuses/commissions/incentives disappeared. High turnover rate of entry level sales associates and cashiers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A small, knowledgeable, well trained, tightly knit sales team who is compensated at a slightly higher rate will always be more profitable and cheaper in the long run than a bunch of after schoolers who are just there for a check.

    Pros

Great Management. Fun atmosphere. Learn & grow here. Learn your strength & weaknesses. Alot of information regarding inventory, sales, revisions, plannograms, signage library, etc.

    Cons

Pay is low. Not really good for college students. Warranty plans are pushed constantly. Company has low margin & high standards for sales goals. Just merged with Office Depot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to give more pay to Sales Consultant.

I have been working at OfficeMax part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

If you work on the floor or the registers, its not that demanding and pretty laid back. You have room to help customers and give them full attention. If you are there for more than a year its easy to move up. From what I hear the bennifits from moving up aren't bad example insurance, vacation etc. Management (at my store at least) are hands on and help lower employees. A real team.

    Cons

I work in the printing department. Never work there if they offer it to you. The customers are the meanest, and you will NEVER get help. You are expected to do orders on the spot that should take days. Very very stressful for the same pay as standing at the register all. Oh pay is awful. You get one raise a year and the person who does nothing all year and calls off twice a month, gets the same raise as you

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
