I worked at Old Dominion Freight

    Pros

Excellent pay, good equipment, good benefits. Only going to get better in the near term.

    Cons

Its trucking, long hours, hard work, dangerous work, high pressure work. One serious mistake and you are gone and not many other companies will touch you. It is getting tough out there due to feds. Not much training in my particular terminal. Not much room for growth in my terminal unless you were friends with the TM, typical of most corporate environments though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to implement a solid training program. Not just multiple choice questions on a computer. Actual hands on.

I worked at Old Dominion Freight full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great insurance, 401K match, the people, the pay, nice equipment, customer flexibility, strong financially secure company.

    Cons

Too many hours, no appreciation, too many "good ole boy" clubs, does not always hire from within, upper management are not honest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire from within especially when the employee has the skills and qualifications, keeps employee morale in check. Corporate office closes for holidays but makes terminals work, especially line haul... Not right! Corporate office take 1 hour lunch breaks and work 8 hour days. Terminal workers take 1/2 hour lunch breaks and work 10 plus hour days... No time to spend with family. Not a family oriented company as claimed.

I have been working at Old Dominion Freight part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

My coworkers and I are all extremely close. The communication and help we give each other is great. I also like how the drivers are extremely nice to us and friends with many of us. My manager is extremely nice and tries to take care of all of us as if we are family.

    Cons

Outdated. Everything is either dirty or broken. It is a problem. I have only been working there for a few weeks but when I started working there I was forced to watch hours of training videos. Once I actually started driving and packing freight, every rule has been broken right before me and I've even been trained to do just that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean up and spend some money on new equipment!

    Pros

Great pay and decent equipment to drive...

    Cons

Management at the Portland terminal needs an overhaul.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to be more understanding and forgiving as it is not your tail on the line out in the field, everybody has problems so learning to cope with each individual on a personal level would be more effective than blacklisting a 14 year veteran driver with a spotless record.

I have been working at Old Dominion Freight full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good pay, 401 k , good insurance.

    Cons

Lack of communication. Managment listens but doesn't react to problems, strange hours, family life non existent due to the hours. Always feeling like your walking on egg shells.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees more, give praise more often than you do.

Good benefits, good pay. Lots of technology. company is always investing money in new equipment and keeping existing equipment repaired.

    Cons

poor treatment from management, no communication, management expects you to read their minds. Little to no chance in advancement.

I have been working at Old Dominion Freight full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Good base pay and decent benefits.

    Cons

Atrocious hours. Often work close to 55-60 hours a week with no overtime pay. Somehow the Department of Labor doesn't seem to care that it's an hourly manual labor job and allows them to work people that much with no overtime pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get people that have management degrees.

I worked at Old Dominion Freight full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

One of the industry leaders. Not bad pay, the Long Beach facility used to be great until they changed managers. The old manager was the best boss I ever had.

    Cons

No employer to employee loyalty. Each facility is run by individual managers and some VP's are not real pleasant to work for. When you get hired you no longer have a name in the system you are a number.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to get back to the family atmosphere and not be so money motivated. Remember it is the people who put you where you are.
