    Pros

Great engineers. Can be challenging, exciting work. Many different technologies that continually evolve. Good benefits.

    Cons

Poor career paths and upward mobility. More often than not people are hired in above rather than being promoted internally.
Many of the great engineers have moved on due to stagnant remuneration and career advancement.
HQ gets more attention than other locations. Career advancement more likely there than other locations.
Top heavy company. It used to be primarily an engineering company. Many years ago it grew significantly and ended up having far too many management positions and resources for the number of engineers.
Information sharing is a big challenge. Still very silo'd knowledge.

    Advice to Management

Focus on reigniting employee passion and finding more motivating remuneration incentives.

    Pros

    * you can make a mistake and not be fired for it - you can learn from it and improve
    * they have some top notch engineers and brains who are mostly allowed to grown and improve the products
    * i have helpful and supportive management

    Cons

    * Lost some of the can-do attitude from 5 years ago
    * The groups are separate and competitive to the point of almost being detrimental to the clients
    * appreciate more funding in areas such as hardware labs

    Advice to Management

Better commission structure and training would go a long way.
instead of encouraging competition, encourage all groups to be cooperative to help the end goal - the client

    Pros

I learned a lot working at Openet and worked with some very sharp people. The benefits were pretty good, and at first the atmosphere was great.

Work-life balance was hit-or-miss. There were times when it was pretty good, but also a lot of get-it-done-yesterday fire drills. Not unusual for a small technology company with huge telecom clients, I think.

Overall my experience was positive, but I wouldn't go back there now.

    Cons

Openet seems to be losing its touch. It grew very rapidly for a few years, but over the last year or so seems to be shrinking just as rapidly. Openet has some very compelling products, but doesn't seem to be able to focus on really polishing them and moving them forward.

The company seemed quite management-heavy toward the end of my time there.

    Pros

Very strong technology, very engaged and smart employees. Interesting area to work.

    Cons

Grew by riding a wave of investment in flagship product. The wave is receding, and the company is unsure what to do with itself. Constant half-baked dabbling in various strategic directions, which are followed with urgency until the next idea comes along. Very political with lots of behind-the-scenes maneuvering, a situation encouraged by top leadership.

    Advice to Management

Streamline and simplify the company direction. Discourage politics.

    Pros

Openet is a very relaxed workplace. There are a lot of references that help you learn all that is thrown at you to know

    Cons

Although there are a lot of references to aid you, there is so much thrown at you in such a short amount of time, it can be overwhelming. Additionally, the company seems to be growing faster than it can control.

    Advice to Management

The first thing that should change is the pace of training. There are many nuances that can hinder a new employees progress. Also, contain growth.

    Pros

-Flexible, which is great for people with young families
    -Good social club
-Good people throughout who work hard and don't do too much politics

    Cons

-Lack of investment in training options in comparison to other tech companies
-Lack of investment in facilities. A simple example is our carpet is a carry-over from previous tenants covers in stains. The canteen is drab and depressing. People should not feel like they're in the soviet union when they're at work, a little investment would make the place bright and inviting
-Internal comms can be poor at times, leading to rumours taking flight

    Advice to Management

Invest more in your staff and facilities and I really think you'll see good results. You have a good team, so spend a bit more cash..

    Pros

A lot of learning to be gained
Management does genuinely tries to make this a better workplace
Some managers do care about the welfare of the staff

    Cons

Some politics across different organizations in the company, not as rampant as some similarly sized companies but if this is not controlled or discouraged, this may grow.
Attempts on improvements are not done right yet

    Advice to Management

Appreciate the folks that work with you better and show it
You need to spend money to make money, there are a lot of talented people in the company, engineers or not that needs to be appreciated better.

    Pros

Openet was innovative and a thought leader. Lost track when trying to go IPOD

    Cons

Nepotism.... Unwilling to listen to the customer. Arrogant VP level

    Advice to Management

Re-invent....flush out VP and above layer. Everyone else has been acquired except Openet. Best times are PAST TENSE
