Used to be a great, fantastic company but its best years are in the past

Senior Associate (Current Employee) Jersey City, NJ

ProsOpera was voted as one of the best company to work for in New Jersey. A great work environment.
This was driven mostly driven by a great corporate culture, fantastic people, and unique industry and functional know-how.
While many of the nice perks are gone (corporate box at the Madison Square Garden, Christmas parties and presents, etc.), the people are still fantastic. Friday lunches are something to look forward as they increase camaraderie and facilitate knowledge sharing.
Some of the best Senior Vice Presidents are still around and working with them is a true pleasure and great learning experience.
The new CEO is a great person and skilled leader; he is really doing his best to improve this situation. The recent town halls are finally providing some clarity on what' happening with the company.
The beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline from the Jersey City office is another nice element (and working from JC is not as bad as it sounds)

ConsThe true cancer was the lack of steady long-term vision and industry focus.
The change of operating model (from a management consulting firm to a Big Data software company) brought some inevitable hurdles, but the absence of a coherent vision made things worse. The focus on dead-end products, the loss of historical clients, some bad corporate decisions, unexpected rounds of lay-offs, and a few broken promises drastically accelerated the existing attrition, and emptied the NY/JC offices.
Other issues to be addressed are:
Compensation (low salaries, no more bonuses, fuzzy sales commission plan, etc.)
    Communication/transparency
    Employee morale
Uncertainty and possibility of being acquired by a large system Integration services company. Maybe just a rumor, but it'd be nice to know more about the authenticity of this event and its implications

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep improving interactions with employees with honest messages about the company current situation and outlook. Provide early warning about future, potential risks, events (e.g., rounds of lay-offs, potential acquisitions)
    Maintain a coherent road-map

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

    A Grand Wasted Opportunity

Staff Scientist (Former Employee) San Diego, CA

ProsWas given the opportunity to work with some of the smartest, creative, and talented colleagues ever. Opera's diverse set of clients allows analysts and scientists to hone many skills. The previous out-of-control CEO was finally replaced by someone who seems very competent and understands how to think strategically. Opera's pay is above average, but you'll work for it.

ConsThere are so many: the perpetually late (and highly opaque) review cycles whose results are often released when the next cycle is supposed to begin; the lack of strategic development of products that led to massive waste in capital and human potential; promised incentives that were never delivered; a sales staff that doesn't understand what is being promised or delivered; a 24/7 expected work environment that burns out employees; most of the best people have already left the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't make promises to clients or employees that cannot be kept. Need more transparency in performance review and incentive pay.

    Bad Management and horrible execution

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Boston, MA

ProsLot of talented people in Analytics and Big Data space.

ConsWork force leaving due to no new projects (no work) and forcing analytics team to use bogus home grown tool call VEKTOR. Horrible management and worst delivery

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease have steady and realistic vision..

Lots of experience that will be taken with me

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe variety and level of clients we work with is pretty amazing. Anything from a smaller company in a rural setting to a fortune 500 company right in NYC. Not only that, but there are healthcare companies, state agencies, banks, credit card companies, manufacturers, etc. The people area really intelligent and from all over, making for a (mostly) enjoyable experience. The work environment is awesome and something I wish more companies had. Gives you a good sense of freedom compared to the typical corporate structure.

ConsWhere to start on the cons. There is a definitive struggle to find a working strategy here. I think we all know we want to be innovative and product solutions in some way that harnesses data, big/small/disparate/whatever. Though we can't seem to get past fancy marketing and smoke/mirror tactics and simply explain the real value that we provide. I feel like we sell ourselves short of what we really do with trying to make it look like this magical machine that spits out insights. Nobody really knows what is going on, though it is hard to stay positive with how things are.

Another review mentioned this, but while the variety of work is nice, the quality of project can vary greatly. Plus we're now in the spot with little room to move.

Advice to Senior ManagementWe need more transparency and a clear/concise plan. Pick one and let us work towards it.

We just hit an iceberg - quick, let's rearrange the deck chairs!

Vice President (Former Employee) Jersey City, NJ

ProsBright and diligent Business Analysts, Data Science pros, and interesting client projects to service. Very effective marketing team.

    Cons- Senior management infighting
    - Lurching from funding round to funding round in choppy waters makes the oarsmen seasick

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management infighting over limited resources leads to failure. Would suggest that investors clean house, but since most of the best talent has already left the company, likely too little too late.

Was a great company, but is falling down quickly

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) San Diego, CA

ProsSmart and friendly employees, good place to learn.

ConsManagement is a disaster, the top leaders do not care what the scientists are thinking, they use lies to keep employees, no communications from the leadership to bottom employees, rumors are everywhere.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think the COO should be the person to be fired first. It was her who leaked the rumor that the company was running out of cash by the end of March 2013. It created panic among employees and people started looking for an exit more actively. Ironically, this lady later was promoted to be the co-COO and started laying off people.

If you're looking for a company with substance, opportunities and work-life balance, look elsewhere

Engagement Manager (Former Employee) New York, NY

ProsGreat to get your feet wet; great camaraderie among junior consultants.

ConsLow set of values among top leadership, expect to be treated accordingly. Limited true expertise among the topics on which Opera declares itself as thought leader (big-data / sourcing), which often results in limited value to the client.

    All Sparkle No Substance

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsHard working and bright employees
    Flexible hours

ConsKey positions in management have been held by people because they have been with the company from the beginning and not because of merit or qualification. Here is the brief summary of the management.
CEO - Waiting for his golden parachute
COO - Redefining the word "wannabe"
CSO - Madeup and non-existant - cleanup needs to start from here
    CTO - Scamster
PMO - Junior Scamster aka making up his own work

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement should consist of people with good experience and credentials . whether in consulting or product development
