    I worked at Orbital Sciences

    Pros

They manufacture spacecraft at Dulles, VA where I worked. As an Electromagnetic Environmental Effects specialist, I contributed to a variety of scientific and commercial communications spacecraft. The work was challenging but intellectually rewarding. There is a casual, almost campus life atmosphere.

    Cons

Upper Management seems to be out of touch with the day to day activities, and places undue emphasis on what I call "New Age" management tools, like Daisen and 5S to name a couple. As an engineer, I had quite a bit of leeway in my daily work effort, but the technicians and assemblers in the Manufacturing and I&T areas are micro-managed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to how the Manufacturing and I&T areas operate day-to-day.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I feel valued here, am given a great deal of latitude and trust, the company has a pretty strong benefits package, but perhaps most importantly the work is almost always challenging and cutting edge. I'm amazed at the projects I've been able to be involved in over my 10+ years here, and I expect more after the upcoming merger.

    Cons

In many areas Orbital is still trying to find a balance between being a small company and competing with the big boys, while at the same time trying to adjust to new competition and cost challenges. This occasionally leads to unclear or conflicting direction from upper management.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits and vacation package. Able to work into new and upper positions. Get to work on the entire system and not just one aspect of the design.

    Cons

Program management varies from Program to Program and can change the entire nature of the Project. No sick days, need to use your vacation days.

I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time

    Pros

Everyone is extremely bright. We get to work on a wide variety of cool space stuff (Deep-space spacecraft, telecommunication satellite, NASA projects, National Defense, Ground systems, Launch Vehicles, etc.).

    Cons

Program management work hard, as you might expect. But, they choose (or perhaps are forced) to run programs to unrealistically short schedules.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't make us sign up to unrealistically short schedules. It robs our design space of better and cheaper solutions.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Variety of interesting engineering projects. If you are eager to learn, there is a wide variety of topics to explore and master. Orbital is great about hiring interns/entry level engineering - there always seems to be opportunities for fresh talent.

    Cons

Salary increase and career tracking is poor. Merit increase and performance tracking is all but non-existent. People who are relatively useless technically/engineering wise and performing tasks an intern or engineering aide should do are Principal, Sr. Principal and even Master level Engineers. It is easy to fool management due to the poor performance tracking. This is not a cutthroat environment - slackers and eager-to-achievers are treated nearly the same (differentiated by maybe 1% salary increase yearly).
