I worked at Orbital Sciences as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

I had a great experience in Orbital's internship program. I learned a lot, my manager was helpful and not overbearing at all, and I worked with a great team who were always willing to help me when I needed it. The company appreciates their interns and really makes an effort to provide a good experience for them.

    Cons

I did not get a very broad experience during my internship because I was only working on one part of one project, but I think that is to be expected.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The management is very understanding and flexible with your hours. You can work from home in case you have an emergency, especially if you have kids. The starting pay is not bad. Great benefits so far. Friendly people

    Cons

They give you a raise every year but not that much! It's better than nothing!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I suggest to hire enough people.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

The people here are excellent, extremely motivated and hours are fairly flexible. You can tell employees are here not because of pay, but because they find value and meaning to their work. Everyone is given responsibility and trained well. I really appreciate the trust and encourage managers pass on to their team. Work-life balance is what you make of it. People have time to spend time with their family, join company clubs and even have the option of working reduced hour weeks. The community is also fantastic - teams are typically composed of people who work together fairly well. At the same time, there are also people who spend all of their time in work because they truly love what they do. In all, there is a wide range of ways you can approach work.

    Cons

One of the biggest challenges are present in the time it takes for processes such as purchasing to be approved. Many methods are archaic and slow down R&D. Additionally, Orbital publicity seems to be lacking. More resources and effective strategies should be used to increase Orbital's presense in the community. Orbital may be a leading provider in satellites, rockets and missiles, but the world has changed drastically. If it's not "hip" on Facebook or Twitter, how can you expect the newer generations to be interested in what we do here at Orbital?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the paperwork trails - Some of them are unnecessary and even redundant. Also, where is the Orbital pride? We do things well and we do them in an efficient way; in this day and age, if it's not on social media, no one will notice.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Most of your peers are talented, challenging work, good food in the Orbiteria and great medical/dental benefits.

    Cons

Overkill on some processes which are redundant, time consuming, waste of resources and repetitive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline your processes to avoid overlaps.

I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed the opportunity to work on different projects, and be close to the technical action. People worked well together. Opportunities for training and external education were good.

    Cons

Sometimes HR processes were kind of disorganized or slow (hiring, trying to place RIFed workers). This may be increased for a while with the addition of ATK.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Enhance the ability of employees to look for jobs in other locations and divisions. Increase priority for finding opportunities for laid-off workers.

    Pros

Excellent benefits, convenient location, nice campus

    Cons

Some reporting tools end up costing the company millions but had very little positive effects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't waste money on ineffective processes which frustrates your employees with useless repetitive tasks.

I have been working at Orbital Sciences as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Got my own office (not cubicle) and did real engineering work. I expected to be doing boring, worthless tasks that are normally associated with internships but instead found myself actually contributing to the project.

Normally your boss can be flexible with your hours if you need to come in late one day or want to take some time off (after all you are hourly so they only have to pay you when you work).

    Cons

As an intern I noticed many communication problems between employees and the management and while I did not have to deal with these issues directly they caused people to be frustrated, on edge and somewhat difficult to work with.

Also on your first day the new hire process is not intern specific, so you end up sitting through some boring presentations that tend to not apply, or only partially apply to you.

    Pros

Lots of very interesting programs to work on, and everything is fast-paced and exciting. Lots of opportunities if you are looking for them. Great network for Early Career.

    Cons

Managers tend to have technical strengths, rather than expertise in management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Communicate better with engineering!

I worked at Orbital Sciences full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Orbital does awesome work in the space industry. I worked on their Geostationary Satellites for 10yrs. They have a niche is about every area of the space industry and lots of opportunities for growth.

    Cons

Satellite industry goes in cycles. The ups are up and the downs are down.
