I worked at Overwatch Systems full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The work is interesting and meaningful, but your experience will vary tremendously depending on the group you are assigned.

The Textron Innovation Projects are a fantastic opportunity if you have time, energy, and desire to participate. You can either (a) get one day a week carved out for a set number of months to produce something that the company owns, or (b) compete with other engineers for a cash prize.

    Cons

Occasional instabilities when government projects ebb and flow; software quality would sometimes be over-emphasized way too much (very little gets done) or way too little (way too buggy). There were times when we were given very little warning for business trips for us or our team members.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Their vision for the future was not always clear. Aim for sustainable growth.

I worked at Overwatch Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

People that work at the company are friendly and knowledgeable.

    Cons

Perpetual short sightedness in just dealing with problems by kicking the can down the road. Process becomes an excuse to not get anything done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating engineers like assets to extract rent out of. To continue getting contracts, you need to add value to your customers.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The flexible time is really nice (Core hours are 10 to 3 Monday thru Thursday), Nice 2 person offices, Decent pay: (Close to the Average), Fun and challenging projects.

    Cons

Generally, cannot work from home (sometimes with Managers permission).
While pay is average, for most employees, it is low for the higher performers.
Due to the nature of our work, there may be long stretches of "bug fixing" which can reduce the morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work harder to recognize and keep the higher performers.

    I worked at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

Flexible hours (can work early or late, but have to be at work during core hours of 10-3). Some very smart people that are fun to work with. Challenging software solutions.

    Cons

No management support for fixing software bugs. NO money spent on training employees and not effort made to train customers. Lots of really dumb, incompetent, and UNQUALIFIED at all levels. Spend too much time trying to find a charge code to work on, but lots of contracts are shrinking or going away completely, so work outlook is not good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix software bugs and don't continue to dismiss them as "enhancements" that never get fixed. Don't promote unqualified people to engineering positions just because you knew them when you were in the Army, or your buddy knew them when they were in the Army.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

OWS provides a laid back work environment

    Cons

Risk averse in attempts to capture new business

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company seniors need to evolve toward current methods of software design and development. Also need to be more risky in putting support behind a more robust R&D effort.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

One of the best things about Overwatch Systems is they are very flexible with work schedules. Taking time off is fairly easy and engineers do not always need to report when they will be out.

    Cons

There is no way for engineers to work remotely. This makes life challenging when working loads of overtime. Projects tend to end at Christmas time, so that is when the engineers are working the most overtime.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow developers to log in to the network more easily so that they can work from home sometimes. Pay and benefits need to be improved now that additional compensation is not an option.

I have been working at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

pretty good job security so far, growing company even in a down market. interesting work and opportunity if you're not afraid of hard work. good people. meaningful work. decent new facilities.

    Cons

kind of insane work schedule. get ready to work nights and weekends; maybe every weekend for months; sometimes you even have to work through holidays. poorly managed (run by aggies); kind of political.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

don't argue in front of the children; its a business, not a dissertation. spend more energy focusing on innovative approaches to customer needs and less energy trying to prove the product line theory using a business model that is clearly inappropriate for it.

    I worked at Overwatch Systems

    Pros

Overwatch Systems offers good entry level opportunities and provides a range of experience. Management is very competent, and respectful of employees. The company was motivated and hungry for growth.

    Cons

Overwatch Systems offered low compensation and little room for job growth. Continued management changes and reorganizations created a tense and inconsistent work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It would be beneficial to be more open and communicative to all of the employees about corporate goals and corporate finances.
