ConsChallenging and competitive market-space, need to update products to new technologies to keep up with competition.

    Advice to Senior ManagementUpdate technologies.

    Great people, great engineers

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Austin, TX

ProsCompany has made it through a tough period in the DoD space and is making some positive strides toward steadying the business. Great location, environment, management has made a ton of improvements for the workforce (relaxed atmosphere, ping pong/foosball, activities, relaxed dress code).

ConsRecovering from downturn has seen a lot of good engineers head for the door.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to engage the workforce in new developments in the business area, give them something to look forward to.

A Nice Place to Work, Close to Home

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Austin, TX

ProsMany of the programmer's are sharp and top notch
Generally everyone is easy to work with
There are a lot of fun state of the art things you get to work on
    Very flexible work environment
Great office spaces with available views of the greenbelt, you don't necessarily work in a cube.
    Close to home
Management does give out lots of certificates and lunches for jobs performed well.

ConsYou feel like a consultant, but aren't paid for extra hours
Management seems to occassionally lack direction
Raises and bonuses are not great for the general employee population
Benefits are mediocre compared to other companies
Tech leads don't get paid any more than a senior programmer.

Advice to Senior ManagementCompensate the employees that are landing you contracts or they will get another job. Provide more of a direction to developers so they can more easily plan tasks. Make the tech lead a position that not only has more importance, but increases compensation for the tech lead.

Overall, it's a good place to work

    Engineer (Current Employee) Austin, TX

ProsClose to home. Great people working here and I have formed lots of great relationships. Salary and benefits are good. Good job security. Interesting work.

ConsDevelopment environment is lagging by several years - mostly because of the glacial pace of the DoD. Working in a closed development environment is very constraining. Excessive process.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend more time studying what the current state of technology is and provide more vision, direction and leadership. It would be nice to have a Steve Jobs calling the shots.

Good people, not always up to the task of change

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe people you work with are great. The projects are challenging and alot of the teams work well together. For a long time there was a wide variety of projects to work on.

ConsIt is going through a really rough time right now. There have been alot of layoffs due to the company not getting contracts. The work environment did not feel very secure for the last few years and almost everybody was worried about their job.

Good company, but defense industry is shaky

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe staff and management are good and they keep everyone apprised. The software is good and the company has a good reputation.

ConsOverwatch's main customer base is the military. Military spending is getting squeezed. It is not as stable as when I joined the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart looking towards new customer base and expand. They need more revenue streams and more contracts. They need to increase spending in research and development.

    Great place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe company is big enough in the defense industry which makes employees feel that their work is important for national security but not a mega defense corporation where people are units of labor.

The team members are great. Unlike many companies I've worked with, the HR staff is incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Very quick to respond to questions and get things done.

My manager is very active in my career growth within the company and really invests alot of time in me.

Work/Life balance (you can come in to work at 10am if you want - as long as you get your 8 hours in and the work is done by deadline), laid back work place

ConsPay is comfortable but not like drug/healthcare industry, the consulting industry or IT field where salaries are much higher. Hey, it's the defense industry.

If you don't have your clearance, you can't work on the really cool stuff right away (this is also a PRO because they will put you in for a clearance - next year I should be able to work on the cool stuff)

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more senior military officers fresh from retirement to help win even more business. For such a military/government/intelligence driven environment, I don't see too many former military people in leadership these days.
