Too old fasioned

Mechanical Design Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at PACCAR full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat people, who love what they do.
Opportunities to move around and try different things.
Good benefits, including a pension plan and 401k!

ConsNot much room for promotion of engineers, unless you want to be a manager.
They (the CEO) are up-tight and old fashioned. I didn't mind being one of the few engineering firms in the Seattle area that had to wear slacks and a button up to work, but when they made it mandatory to be clean shaven, that was a little much for me. Your workplace choosing your work dress code is one thing, but telling you how you are going to look on the weekends is taking it back at least 50 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou don't need to be yes men to the chairman. He has you as advisers for a reason. Maybe you are afraid that if you tell the chairman that forcing your employees to shave is a dumb idea, he will fire you. You might be right.

Ultra Conservative

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at PACCAR full-time for more than 10 years

ProsStable company with good benefits

ConsDept. Managers operate in fear, so they rarely feel confident to make decisions without seeking approval from Sr Mgmt. Projects often have unrealistic deadlines, and go over budget because they weren't given the time to do proper planning.
Very slow to upgrade Enterprise software and keep up with Internet technologies.
Strict dress code at certain Divisions.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive Department Managers and their teams more responsibility to make decisions based on their area of expertise rather than have Corporate Executives call all the shots.

Business Analyst

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at PACCAR

ProsPension and people are two of the great things. There are some opportunities for advancement, however very limited.

ConsLack of resource planning for work. If you work on projects that are not aligned to your managers goals then there is a conflict at review time. There are a few managers that I saw through the years that had experience and enjoyed deploying employees, however most of those folks are gone and have been replaced with newer managers. Unfortunately, the managers (no fault of their own) have not been taught how to develop people and struggle to understand their employees. Vacation is non-negotiable (start at 2 weeks). The atmosphere can be very depressing as there is little excitement to work there.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen the CEO (Mark C. Pigott) comes to visit your area, you are required to have "business attire" and they say that Mr. Pigott doesn't like the smell of popcorn, so don't make any while he is there. No food or drink should be on your desk. The company also makes sure to clean the parking lot, vacuum and clean the bathrooms as well as doing extra cleanup around the building. When he is close to the building an email announces that he has entered the property....just remember the company is about honoring the leader and pleasing him.

Fear is a Great Motivator!

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Bellevue, WA

I worked at PACCAR full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat Products, Good Benefits and Salary, Location

ConsManagement by fear.
Demeaning treatment of employees
Upper management gossips about each other, employees, and the Chairman; hires people like themselves - dull order takers.
Women still do not have the same opportunities for advancement.
Rigid dress codes. It's a professional environment and clothing should reflect that but there needs to be room for personal choices.
The chairman's minions are dangerously dumb.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt will fall on deaf ears. They know what's right, but they have mortgage and car payments to make so it's, "Yes Mark, I totally agree with you."

PACCAR = unappreciated, undervalued and under paid employees

Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Renton, WA

I worked at PACCAR full-time for more than 10 years

ProsWork life balance is good and if you stay long enough you will get a pension.

ConsManagement are robotic and clueless, the culture is straight out of the 1950's, pay is far below national average, no upward mobility unless you want to be in management, no cost of living increase and 2.5% average pay increase every two years. I could keep going but I think my point is clear.

Advice to Senior ManagementShow some backbone and promote motivated high performing employees. Read the exit interviews (and take action) of employees who have moved on to better opportunities.

Difficult at best

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at PACCAR full-time

ProsGood financials; some smart people

ConsAll about the bottom line
Very micromanaged
Very stuffy environment
How you look is more important than how smart or dedicated you are
Everyone is afraid of losing their job
No one will tell "The Chairman" the truth
Do more with less attitude
Very stressful environment
All the good people leave
All about the image not dealing with real issues

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention! Hire people who will tell the truth; spend energy on things that really matter not on things of no value ie. what color suit people wear, what people look like, etc. Instead of spending time bullying current employees to write positive reviews on here what about dealing with the truth on this page.

Getting Worse by the day

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at PACCAR full-time for more than 10 years

ProsYou don't have to pay to park at most of the facilities. Stable stock returns. Decent benefits and pension. Co-workers are fun

ConsUltra conservative. Poor leadership. Live in fear. Dress code from the 60s. Limited flexibility and good ole boy network. Females are definitely at the bottom.

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

This place has great individuals who try to make up for a management culture that is 100 years old.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at PACCAR

ProsPACCAR offers employment stability and the chance to work with beautiful product and some very dedicated individuals. Those individuals often put in superhuman effort to get a good product to the customer.
The retirement benefits are great.
PACCAR is consistently profitable.

ConsWhen you are consistently profitable, a 4th generation ex CEO, but still Chairman of the Board could start to believe he can't do anything wrong. You might implement a no facial hair policy. It sounds unreal, but forty people were pulled into executive offices and told they had to go home to shave the beards, mustaches, and goatees. People who had beards for 30 years had to lose them or fear for their job. Very few execs had the power/guts to not implement the policy.
This culture of fear can also be seen in technical product shortcomings being swept under the rug. As an executive, why bring something unpleasant up when you could lose your bonus or job? By the time the shortcoming hits sales, you can have a few more years of employment and bonuses.
What better way to create fear in your executive ranks than to publically dress down a demoted executive in front of employees during a division wide meeting for non performance?
Accounts are king/queen here for better and for worse. Quarterly profit is all important. Short term savings are often achieved at a long term cost.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt's good the 4th generation is no longer a CEO. But if the chairman of the board is worried about facial hair, he could lose focus on something technically big, it's effect on total cost of ownership, and eventually the effect it could have on market share.

50 shades of gray, and by that I mean the dress code.

Senior Systems Analyst (Current Employee)
Renton, WA

I have been working at PACCAR full-time for more than a year

ProsAdequate benefits.
Pension plan.
Financially stable.
Employer retirement contribution (SIP rather than 401K match).
Stock purchase plan.
Holidays observed, OK vacation accruals and a birthday holiday.

ConsOld fashioned, staunch, stuffy.
Dilbert like layer of ineffective middle managers
Drab and generally depressing attitudes of other longer term employees
Outdated technology and hardware
Some rock stars come in but often quickly get burnt out and choose to move on
Large amount of outsourcing to India and cutting of developers in the states

Advice to Senior ManagementEmpower your employees.

Micro Managed

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at PACCAR full-time for more than 10 years

ProsSolid Product. Many good people working at the manufacturing facility...with the exception of the plant manager and a couple of the cronies.

ConsFormer CEO was a lunatic. Bred a vindictive style throughout the corporation down to the plant level. Very much a good old boy corporation. Generally, they do not seek the advise of the workforce, and on the rare occasion that they do it is ignored.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to reverse years of inbreeding....
