    Pros

What was once a great company was, in the end, fleeced by its creators.

    Cons

two-faced and greedy management, has trickled down to sub-par service and reliability. Management is played the shell game with the company's debt and grew by acquisition -- piling on more debt. This created an untenable situation and the Windstream purchase was the only way out. Now the employees are part of a behemoth telecom company -- something we all fought against just a few years ago. It takes a different mentality to be another sheep in a company like Windstream. Good luck and good riddance.

I have been working at PAETEC

    Pros

Initially, a very good place to work for. However, since it went public the company has placed more emphasis on customer order completion rather than customer order quality and employee appreciation.

    Cons

A sales driven organization (without any regard for the Back Office) in every sense of the word. Employees are expected to maintain multiple job roles without the true support of upper management. 12-14 hours days, including weekends, are the norm, not the exception (even for salaried-exempt employees). If you are looking for a place of employment where Operations and Sales truly work together, this is not the place. At Paetec the sale trumps all.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to the company's core focus - customer service - both external and internal. At one time, the company prided itself on customer service, now it prides itself on service in general.

PAETEC's like college: Great knowledge growth potential that another company will reward you for handsomely.

    Pros

Learning opportunities abound even for entry level workers. Great place to go if you're looking to build a resume. Families are welcome to visit the office (my kids still talk about the Halloween and Easter parties).

    Cons

Learn what you can from your peers and get out of Dodge! Middle Managers focus on protecting their kingdoms; stay low on-the-radar or risk being labeled a threat. Knowledge growth is limitless, salary growth is non-existent. When you get that rare, hard fought 2% raise, be sure to thank your boss profusely, then watch that increase get swallowed up by benefit increases. My first job after PAET paid 20 grand more, right off the bat, for a similar position. Watching the Senior Team is like watching a season of Survivor; every one is out for themselves, while the company takes a back seat. The company is in way over it's head in acquisitions, each one has contributed to the $1.5B debt level; organic revenue growth is puny; while the company struggles to integrate the disparate back office systems. With that kind of debt at increasing interest rates, it's no wonder why bonuses that years ago reached 15% are now eliminated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are easily 2 levels of management in each department that could be eliminated and it would be transparent to the customer base and an improvement to morale and the bottom line. Try paying down the debt before taking on yet another company barely staying afloat; or buying back worthless stock.

    Pros

The employees are sort of family-like, and once you're in they are friendly. Periodically there are courses/classes offered to learn, or self help, weight loss, or smoking cessations type things offered & encouraged, which I thought was nice.

    Cons

This company has zero respect for it's hardworking employees, if you're not in sales, then you simply don't matter. They stopped raises, and bonuses, and 401K matches about 4 years ago, and then encourage everyone in the co. to listen to the CEO conference call every week, where he talks about how many millions he just spent on this or that, and built a new billion dollar data center, and the top sales people are all going away on some super expensive trip to some island every year.
The average everyday data entry, equipment, project management, IT, account/sales support etc. - the people who really make a company work - can't even beg for so much as a cost of living increase - it's "just not in the budget!"

Their systems are so convoluted and antiquated, that SO much time is wasted everyday by completely unnecessary redundancy. they refuse to listen to anyone who has a better more efficient, more cost effective way of doing things. You're actually told to just do it the wrong way, because it will never change... !
The only reason this company made the "best places to work" chart, is because on the employee survey's, anyone who states any negativity, is actually told to go back and make it "more of what they want to hear"

    It's a joke!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read sites like these, see what employees are actually saying about your company. Stop the micro-managing, and let people really speak their mind, and stop insulting us all every week by talking about how much was just spent, most of us can barely afford the gas to keep coming to work.

    Pros

They generally leave you alone to do your work but the organization is so top heavy that you have to kowtow to everyone in order to get anything done.

    Cons

There is an abusive attitude toward sales reps and a feigned ignorance by the management of existing economic conditions. They are slow to pay for commissions and show favoritism to their pet employees to a dangerous fault. Unfortunately, they, management, have a very high opinion of themselves bereft of any reality other than juggled numbers. I am so happy that I am no longer employed there. Do yourself a favor and pass on this one, your health will thank you. Yes, that is right, the constrained pressure that the management foists on the sales reps is so disturbing that many get seriously ill because of it. It is an extremely toxic environment and the perpetrators of this incredibly harmful atmosphere get sadistic pleasure and energy from their manipulations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to stop sucking the life out of the employees. It is difficult, but any good company avoids the bullying, coercion, stonewalling, cover ups, and destructive policies that are so rampant and insidious within Paetec. If your peers don't agree, get out as soon as you can.

    Pros

Good benefits, nice people to work with

    Cons

The need for speed over customer service. Lack of Training. Quality assurance scoring is hit or miss. Pay is lousy compared to as much as we need to know. Micro manages every aspect of the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start putting the customer first and treat all employees when it comes to quality the same way. We need training and not be just thrown in the deep end and expect to find your way out. Pay is not the best for the type of work we have to do.

    Pros

big company, standard benefits, a job, thats it.

    Cons

No one cares about quality work, in fact, it seems that those who are the most loyal, have worked there the longest, and who are good at their jobs, get laid off. Crap company to work for, and the customer service is embarassing, techs take the full brunt of paetec lousy customer service.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote within, anyone can read from a book and preach things they remember from a book, real leadership skills are developed from real experience.

    Pros

They let you breath the air for free but you wont get a reimbursement on the brain cells you loose.

    Cons

Real World certifications dont mean anything within this institution. You can be short of Bill Gates in your abilities to troubleshoot and unless you go through Paetec's flaky internal edumacation programs (that all the employees that like each other cater the answers to one another when tests are being taken) you dont kno knuffin. You have a better chance of getting hit by a meteor in the NOC than getting promoted. Simply because being competent, qualified, and educated threatens the priesthood (good ole boy network) of tards they call management. (They have two good manager's have to state only two and I wish S.K. and J.E. in Queen City the best)

There business model is liquid and they can be disolved in minutes if they loose their shareholders like any other mismanaged entity.

They dont own cable plants! As far as infrastructure they are codependant on the back of those LECS that the government broke up and deregulated in the 1980's that actually own copper and fiber. (In most cases they know how to keep things running!)

(ATT being one (respect these guys, hard working) and unfortunately Verizon is the other (The harvester of incompetent union thugs world-wide)

As far as support in the NOC:

They tap your calls, track you like a rabbitt, and place importance on non mission essential factors (IE Genuine Customer Concern)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep juggling rocks in your glass houses. (They literally have glass cubicles, like those at your local jail for visitation) Your never to good for the unemployment line and food stamps.

    Pros

    VERY comprehensive benefits package
    correct on-boarding process enables success
easy to sell product because you can believe in it based on customer support

    Cons

like in many organizations, local actions can vary greatly from the corporate philosophy. I think most senior management is great, but local management is disastrous. Also, for a F1000 company, they are CHEAP - stripping away reimbursement benefits this year, as well as not even purchasing a CRM system - that's right, there is no way to quickly tell who is a customer, manage accounts, manage duplicates, or even keep track of your activities. They do use some of their ERP/accounting system from Oracle for that, but it's really not designed for it and is not effective whatsoever. Some offices are also stuck in the "Boiler Room" cold call days despite what corporate trains on as quality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be willing to take a second look at your offices. Offices with a few well-producing large accounts can often mask what's going on inside. Send any manager that has been there longer than 3 years back to beginner sales training. High turnover after a time can no longer be blamed on "bad hires", a closer look is needed.
