I worked at PC Connection full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The training program was top notch and gave a nice overview of everything you'd be selling. Nice team environment depending where you end up. Goals are tiered based on tenure.

    Cons

Upper management tends to micromanage and fail to realize there are time consuming pieces to the sales cycle that could impact you hitting the 60/2:15 metric daily.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let's the sales managers run their teams and you'll be surprised how well it goes. Micromanaging tends to hurt everyone.

    I worked at PC Connection

    Pros

PC Connection and its subsidiaries offer a decent income with a pleasant work environment. There are many layers to the company so there are plenty of opportunities for advancement and new challenges. Rewards from the company and its vendors make PCC positive place to be. The training is a plus as well. The cons below have little effect on the entry level or middle management positions.

    Cons

Senior management tends to be obsessive about metrics and do not always manage to the strengths of the individual. There is a tendancy at the upper echelon to be very wishy washy about direction and focus. Middle-upper management is averse to change and wields a lot of power in thwarting positive direction changes and planning. There tends to be a lot of political infighting amongst the higher ups.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a positive direction for growth and stick with it. Changing paths on a regular basis, setting a course and then not having the fortitude to stick with it for the long hall, always falling back on what worked yesterday instead of trying to add to the company's strengths...these weaknesses will drive the rank and file crazy and geatly diminish their respect for you. Treat your people like people, not sheep who can be fed drink tickets at corporate events, given a few meaningless platitudes in a slick video presentation, and then put back in the pen.

    I worked at PC Connection

    Pros

The best thing about working at PC Connection was the technology (I work in IT). They do a pretty good job of keeping you technically current and using mostly current tools and IDEs. (Some companies will balk at upgrading to a new technology). The company isn't very big, and operates pretty lean...so your contributions can seem to have impact. The group I was in also maintained external applications, which was a nice change from the intranet applications I've spent a number of years working on.

While PC Connection doesn't spend much on training, they *do* allow developers to attend one conference a year...which was nice.

My group was great - my manager was really supportive and would shield the developers from most of the office politics.

    Cons

Surprisingly, in a company of this size advancement can be glacial. Some days I felt as if I knew as much as the senior level developers in the group. Annual increases are lower than inflation and rather unimpressive. My group would rotate being on-call 24x7 - the differential was almost laughable and way out of line with what other companies offer.

Outside the sales organization, there were no bonuses or other incentives. There are also a number of raffles, contests and other incentives offered to the sales force but not to the rest of the company. This leads to a feeling of inequity with the "outsiders."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer some kind of incentive to the other employees in the organization who make things work. Increase the differential pay for 24x7 employees.

I have been working at PC Connection

    Pros

great place to build a resume if you are young. There is some career growth if you are looking to advance.

    Cons

The salaries are very low compared to the market. Micro Managing is extremely strong in the sales department. They sell the latest and greatest IT solutions but do not use them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have you ever read who moved my cheese? That is PCC people are just use to the way things are and don't want to try anything new.
