    Pros

    - small chip company: possible to learn many aspects of chip design in short span of time - focus on documentation increases opportunity for self-learning - reasonably collegial culture: people are friendly, back-stabbing or sabotage are rare

    Cons

    - bureaucratic yet under-resourced, so central resources (IT, CAD) suffer substantially yet dictate policies far and wide - poor benefits - geography disbursed design community makes collaboration difficult - limited revenue growth potential - risk-adverse culture results in product losers - average/weak engineering talent - very political organizational structure - weak central CAD group

    Advice to Management

    Reduce management by half. Decentralize CAD so as to empower design groups to make their own decisions, allowing project priorities can align with product excellence rather than adherence to flows and methodologies of dubious value.

    Pros

    PMC was not a good place to work in. Too much politics . Sr Management was pretty incompetent. Most of the good work was controlled by people in Burnaby

    Cons

    Too much politics All the good work moved to Burnaby Managers were bad at schedules. Though smart engineers,good process etc

    Advice to Management

    Don't concentrate all the work in Burnaby Give competitive salaries Middle managers need to be better at scheduling. More foresight.

    Pros

    Friendly people, willing to talk face to face. Technical experts willing to share with others. Doing technically challenging work, sometimes leading edge. Very good quality standards, and eager to maintain good customer relationships.

    Cons

    R&D design team does not respect other groups,rejects new ideas or approaches. There is no good sense of discipline, with frequent schedule slips. Designers mess up key features with no consequences. Dysfunctional behavior: confrontations, put downs, yelling in meetings or e-mails; but these disappear when talking face to face. A lot of churning through procedures and red-tape. Layoffs occur frequently, with no good reasons why. Very top heavy with management. International company but very Canadian centric, not open to other ideas or cultures.

    Advice to Management

    Focus on accountability starting with the top VP, schedules and cost. Avoid acquisitions that are too expensive and take too long to pay off; much money was lost purchasing companies that never delivered. New CEO shows promise improving discipline, but culture is entrenched.

    Pros

    Acceptable pay. 401k match vests from day 1.

    Cons

    Weak managment team. Group is full of old HP/Agilent employees who do not want to make hard decisions. Limited growth opportunity as most markets served are mature.

    Advice to Management

    Evaluate new talent at the director level in the management chain.

    Pros

    It's possible to learn about different markets, applications, and technologies. It's a very technology-oriented company.

    Cons

    PMC treats its employees poorly compared to other companies in the valley. It continues to lag the market and other companies its size. It has a very Canadian attitude, which doesn't cut it in Silicon Valley where there are better managed as well as truly innovative in the products that it offers.

    Advice to Management

    Hire some better management. Truly innovate and try to create a better work environment for your employees.

    Pros

    Excellent compensation package. Relatively successful. Lots of down time to work on whatever you want.

    Cons

    Morale is terrible due to unexciting work and frequent layoffs. Middle managers are concerned primarily with their own advancement/recognition. Little collaboration or respect for new ideas. Dysfunctional QA/Development relationship. 90 day plans de-emphasize being team players so your on your own most of the time. Little to no innovation due to entrenched mentalities and products.

    Advice to Management

    Need to invest in better test infrastructure to call products "enterprise". Monetize software products. Convert China team into development team and move QA resources close to development teams.

    Pros

    The only pro was the compensation and the people I worked with.

    Cons

    Engineering group in North America does not like new ideas and basically holds on to "old" methods for job-security purposes. This company has history of buying companies and firing all R&D after short period.

    Pros

    - work-life balance can be pretty good once you figure out which deadlines are actually important - rank-and-file employee do care about their work environment, and setup fun activities

    Cons

    - poor management exec/senior level, with some exceptions - stagnant work environment. Most senior employees hoping to be laid off. - poor performing employees are still treated well, which devalues the work of all good employees - corporate values are amusing, in a bad way - recent award programs tend to reward 70% of management

    Advice to Management

    - stop rewarding managers for bad decisions - if you want employees to work harder and better, you have to give them a proportional incentive and/or provide opportunities for growth
