I worked at Pace Analytical full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The hiring process was quick, I had an offer within two weeks of my contacting the company with an interest in a position. For anyone new to the area or in a life transition, this is a great option for getting a good job quickly. All of the Pace employees I was in contact with were professional, courteous, and genuine.

I was a contract employee placed in a position with a well-regarded company in the local area. This position suited me and my skills well, offered me training opportunities, and the ability to work with new lab equipment. It was a term-limited contract, which gave me time to find a permanent position with another great Minnesota employer.

    Cons

My position was a term-limited contract with no permanence. Due to this circumstance, I was unable to view Pace Analytical as a dependable employer as they could not guarantee a new placement once my contract was over.

The vacation and sick time benefits were the poorest I have had in any job. Time is earned regardless of pay grade or position, but is based on years of service with only 6 days of vacation in year 1 (this has changed to 10 days recently). Earning 1.5 hours of sick per 80 hours worked makes it difficult to build up and results in tough decisions to make when one is sick and has not earned enough time.

    Advice to Management

Make a more competitive benefits package if your aim is to compete for happy and dedicated employees in the Minneapolis-St. Paul job market.

    Pros

Pace Analytical is a fantastic, well-managed lab and staffing company. The recruiters and site managers genuinally care about their employees, even the ones that work offsite. You can expect prompt replies about any problems or conscerns. If you come on as a contractor, they have an excellent reputation and good relations amongst Twin Cities area science-based companies. They can give you a way in at companies such as 3M, Honeywell, Genenal Mills, and Boston Scientific.

    Cons

The pay is slightly below industry average, but the benefits compensate. If you are a contractor, I wouldn't rely on getting hired fulltime. It's only a chance, and it's more the exception than the rule. Be proactive and try to stand out.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. But don't overburden the on-site managers too badly.

    Pros

Lots of hours, lots of experience to be gained
Ability to work in a number of fields
Great starter job for post college

    Cons

Offsite work hours can be long
Staffing for offsite has to work within hours set by company working for

    Advice to Management

Offer less rotating shifts to people with families, or a higher compensation for those doing rotating shifts

    Pros

Pace is the only environmental laboratory with sustainable annual growth. This growth provides multiple opportunities for career advancement.

    Cons

Relatively weak upper management in some areas.

    Advice to Management

Some of the internal systems (email, etc...) are inefficient. Utilize current systems and hardware to make employees more efficient.

    Pros

If you are a professional looking for a scientific career and interested in working for a company whose mission is to help clean up the environment and positively effect human health, then Pace is the laboratory for you. Pace focuses on customer service and comprehensive capabilities to differentiate themselves from their competitors. The company is privately held and makes short and long term decisions with Pace's core values in mind and based on what is best for company as opposed to shareholders. Continuous improvement is embraced and innovations and changes with merit are encouraged to be developed. This is a rapidly growing company with the systems/ services in place and leadership to grow organically and fiscally sound to also grow via acquisition in what is a very competitive market segment.

    Cons

The environmental testing industry is very competitive so, the opportunity to work hard often what is needed to succeed at any job type or laboratory. The testing is regulatory in nature and accountability, integrity, and ethics are must haves for anyone in or outside of the lab. Seasonality, especially in the northern half of the country, causes work volume to fluctuate considerably over the course of the year.

    Advice to Management

Diversify where possible, acquire intelligently, and be the best in the industry in the integration of new labs and services

    Pros

Pay and benefits were great, and I was lucky to be placed at 3M. Nothing wrong with working there--flexible workday, great people, labs, constant building improvements, excellent work environment. Very high standards, it is understood but never said that everyone is (or is supposed to be) a Type A workaholic and overachiever. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just don't ever think you can coast along there.

Because I was assigned to 3M I had an indirect experience with my Pace managers; emails about submitting timesheets on time and the like. I actually met them during the monthly meetings (which didn't seem to accomplish much in my mind) and when I was unexpectedly canned.

    Cons

Contracters are expendable, and they (your contract company) will not hesitate to drop you with no warning at all if they think you're slacking, regardless of the circumstances. Once that happened, all Pace could do was say "well, sorry, please talk to HR on Monday and we'll see what we can do."

    Advice to Management

Have a better backup plan for contract employees. I jumped on an opening right after getting canned and got an intervew, but they chose someone else and I'm still waiting to hear back about all the other openings I keep applying for... it would be really easy to stick someone with a few years' experience in an entry-level position until something more appropriate opens up.

    Pros

I enjoyed everyone I interacted with inside the company. Management was quality, and their vision was admirable enough. The CEO visited each lab at least once a year and seemed both accessible and enthusiastic.

    Cons

Pay was poor. I was paid through a temp agency and was told that after a few months they'd add me on. I inquired numerous times about the update in regards to that and was always told that they'd look into it. Months later I decided to move on. Had they offered me the security I wanted and was somewhat-promised I'm sure I would have stayed.

    Pros

Professional organization with quality people. Supervisors and managers were very supportive and personable. Offers training and resources to its employees which provides a competitive advantage for its employees onsite at client companies as contractors. Benefits of health insurance and 401K plan. Many positions available. Provided an opportunity to gain experience starting out in career. Employees at client's site provide a maximum of 8 hours of service per day.

    Cons

Salary was less than what employees of other contract firms earned, but only due to having better benefits. Some people end up in the same contract position for long periods of time depending on the client group they work in. Limited ability to climb within the company due to size of organization.

    Pros

Overall this is a good company to work for. Although there are well over 1,200 employees, there are a lot of opportunities for advancement. Since the company is continuously growing (and has been every year I believe since the early 90's), new positions are being added all of the time as business needs call for them. This allows motivated, driven employees drive their own career path which is rare for large companies. There is also daily interaction and contact with Director level management which allows you to really prove yourself to those that matter. If you like variety and a fast pace environment this is the company for you.

    Cons

This company performs all 3rd party testing and the competition is extensive. Not only does this mean that Pace needs to output a quality product at all times, but it also forces them to drive prices for their services lower that they would hope. Although they have a good continuous improvement system, the profit margins can easily suffer therefore salary, wage and benefits cost must stay low. Unfortunately, this means that the pay and benefits are not above average. They certainly reward those that stay with the company, but for those starting off in their careers (0-5 years experience) they would likely find higher salaries somewhere else.

    Advice to Management

Ensure that new employees fully understand the career paths that they can have at Pace. Hopefully this will reduce turnover in that 0-5 year experience range- typically these employees care about salary over benefits/long term potential, so it is difficult to keep these employees around when they can easily find a job somewhere else making 20-25% more.
