Lost in a Sea of Management Demands

Labor Relations and Human Resources (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for less than a year

ProsTelecommuting; salaries are good for starers or those without a degree - not so good if you are already high in the pay scale and coming in; benefits are better than some private sector, pension plan. If you are focused - good work/life balance.

ConsManagers and up are jumping around with demands out of fear - not a good mid-management set up. The demands shift all over the place and take up too much of the day. Generally weak middle management. Low-balling the salaries for new hires and managers. Hard to hear you came in at top step when you didn't. Work is too focused on meeting odd measures of productivity - all for the bonus.

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the metrics of bonus measurements - ie: injury reporting and numeric scales that only measure a small aspect of work that employees really have no control over. The daily work gets driven by these poor scales. Pay well from the start. Too insular and averse to new ideas.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Never get too comfortable - you may be out of job without much notice

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat benefits, great pay, work life balance - far better than most private companies. Very culturally diverse and a clear focus on promoting women.

ConsBack door politics, constant lay-offs and re-hiring (except those laid off), poor public image, constant leadership change, nepotism, favoritism, poor management/leadership and motivated entirely by profits. Senior management is "Untouchable" and so very unapproachable.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a continuous look at your leadership and get rid of the poor performing managers. Position the company as the "employer of choice". Hire a top PR firm to clean up your public image. Begin lay offs from the top down and practice Change Management.

GCC Vacaville Internal issues

Transmission Systems Operator (Former Employee)
Vacaville, CA

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for less than a year

ProsWorking there was very goot pay. ALOT of overtime if you want it.

ConsManagement was out of touch with its workers there. Workers were very underappreciated there which is the reason for the high turnover rate.

Advice to Senior ManagementReconnect with the employees and let then know that you not only care but understand the stress and extreme attention to detail they deal with every day. When peoples lives are at stake, there is no room for error! The organization, as a whole, can grow only if both management and employees welcome the change.

Working in Information Technology at PG&E

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time

ProsOpportunities to work with new technology and significant investment in leading technologies

ConsIT senior leadership does not have experience working in a regulated industry; also VERY limited experience working with utilities. New leadership model may not be effective. Business clients likely to realize limitations of leadership and become disenchanted. Senior leadership removed from and seems to be very disinterested in employee welfare and employee engagement.

Advice to Senior ManagementLeverage experience of employee base that have significant utility experience and knowledge with customer base; executive leadership needs to become more engaged with employees at all levels.

Financial Analyst

Financial Analyst (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 3 years

Pros-Employee Resource Groups
-Corporate offices in downtown SF
-Nice collegues
-New leadership

Cons-HR is one of the worse I've seen. HR Reps not taking responsibility for their actions. They even re-hired an individual that was fired for some wrong doings and did not realize it until an old employee from the former dept found that he was working there again. HR's response was that they "lost" his records. They are also slow and at times unresponsive.
-Lots of long lifers there. Nothing wrong with that, but when you have to make a change, like another guy said in his review, it's like steering a ship. Some people there have been there for so long they can't think outside the box
-Lots of bad press from San Bruno
-Technology is wayyy behind compared to other companies of their size. Although they have a new CIO and she seems to be turning things around.

A plant run by fear

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Avila Beach, CA

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric

ProsCommitted employees who really want to do the right thing and often have the experience and insight to know what the right thing should be.

ConsFear and control best describe management style at our plant. Management knows they should engage their employees but they don't. My suspicion is they know they won't hear what they want to hear.

Advice to Senior ManagementI have no advice to management because they wouldn't listen. I have advice to current and future employees... run away, run away screaming.

Good place to gain experience but not for long term growth

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric

Pros-ability to learn transferrable skills
-learn how to work within matrix organization
-great benefits and reimbursement program
-product is relatable

Cons-convoluted leadership structure with capped ceilings for growth
-doesn't foster open and honest communications within organization
-continual spin in terms of goals and priorities
-antiquated ways of thinking due to fear of public scrutiny and relationship with Commission

Advice to Senior ManagementIn order to grow and develop as a company, you need to be willing to risk the backlash from the public and strive to do what is best for the customers regardless of the judgments along the way. Be willing and open to talk to the Commission. Push back when things don't make sense and stop forcing your employees to work on a project that is set up to fail from the get go.
