overall stable, but internal restructurings quite common

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe company is large enough to allow employees to explore many departments in the energy space. Employees can spend their entire career with this one company.

ConsAs a government regulated company, with 100 year history and large in size, decision making can be sluggish and introductions of cutting-edge technologies especially for internal operations, takes more time that with companies in other industries.

Patience, patience, patience, patience, patience

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor for more than a year

ProsIt's meaningful, interesting work with good people. Easy to roll up your sleeves and contribute right away.

ConsChaotic environment. "Not enough resources" really means a lack of focus, priorities, and accountability. Environment is not very encouraging or creative.

Advice to Senior ManagementSet fewer #1 priorities, set a plan, and stick with the plan.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Still one of the largest investor-owned electric and natual gas utilities but recent merger place it mid-pack not on top

Program Manager, Supervisor (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 10 years

ProsLarge organization with opportunities to move to different roles depending on qualifications and organizational needs.
Incentive-based compensation.
Retirement plan options effective 01/01/14.

ConsVery uncertain regulatory environment.
Missed merger opportunities in the past; several other combined utilities in U.S. now larger.
Considerable rate pressures driven by need to upgrade infrastructure and meet regulatory mandates.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on Premier Survey Results improvement

IT services

Programmer Analyst (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 5 years

ProsPretty laid back, people are helpful and genuinely interested in helping if someone has a question. A lot of them have incredible knowledge since they've been around from the days of the main frame and when systems were being built

ConsToo much paper work, too many processes. It's also far too top heavy and too many people supervising and not enough people doing work. Also, there are a budget issue and some people in supervisory positions mainly because they have been there for a long time and not because of any actual skill set.

Advice to Senior ManagementLess paper work and more financial incentives are needed

ConsFor a large company not as many opportunities as it's too bureaucratic.

Changing quickly... but not there yet

Manager (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time

ProsLots of opportunities for upward progression as the company's current employees retire, good work-life balance and benefits, focus on turning the company around and investing in operational and customer-related elements is bringing momentum to change

ConsStuffy, bureaucratic and conservative culture does not make it an innovative or fun place to work, or an easy place to get things done. As a younger employee, I have few peers and don't feel as though the company is concerned about my development

Company moving in right direction...

Human Resource (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time

ProsLots of employees are willing to stop and help you; large company environment that is hiring a lot; new leaders in company (CEO) are taking the company in the right direction

Consmany middle management are very territorial and can be short sighted with their own organization's personal gains, which hinders overall company benefit and improvement; slow to change and lots of very tenured employees resist change

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
