It could have been better if I had continued working after 10+ yrs. w/company instead of quitting & starting over again.

Senior Technical Assistant (Former Employee)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric

ProsPG&E has great benefits and retirement package and severance package if you were one of the unfortunate to be laid-off, as I was.

ConsThey seem to have lay-offs when you least expect it and on an ongoing basis. To trransfer seem a lot to be based on who you know and not what you know I notice.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot only should they seem to notice the bad in an employee and be critical in what needs to be improved, they should make more apparent to those that do well or above expectations and compliment more, as well.

Excellent benefits. Good pay.

Computer Systems Programmer (Former Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric

ProsBenefits, good pay, stability, lots of opportunities for inside transfer. RDO is a real plus. Some teams are very good to work on. Exciting projects. Company is very focused on your safety, it is actually a high priority and you are encouraged to get as much safety training as possible. Stable company with good underlying business plan. You can telecommute pretty often. You get a bunch of sick time, so much so, thats it nearly impossible to use it all.

ConsHours can be long, outdated technology, silos exist in some spots. Can be highly political at times and you need to steer clear of that. Some outdated technology exists and that can be a real pain. Alot of sites that you may need to travel to, some groups very difficult to interface with. Vacation time is accrued as you go, not in one lump sum. It is only 10 days. Number of paid holidays could be higher.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrack closer to corporate goals. Talk alot, but real action is slow in coming.

I personally love working at Pacific Gas and Electric

Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric

ProsThe best reasons to work at Pacific Gas and Electric are, what i would consider, the most important things while looking for a job.

The starting compensation is very competitve, the benifits package is very nice, 401k matching is available and eventhough it isnt the highest matching i have seen there is also a pension. Tuition refunds are available as well as many other little perks.

The work/Life balance is among the best, with the flexible 9-80s schedule, every other week is a four day week which is a beautiful thing and allows for a much more manageable home life.

ConsWell most of the downsides i can list, i havent really seen, but i have heard through heresay. So I will mention those.

People who have been in the company formany years have said that their salaries have not continued to stay competitive over the years, I have yet to find this true but that is due to my relatively short amount of time at the company.

The only other negative thing i can think about the company is union involvement, namely ESC.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior Management could address the fact that the staff (in engineering, but also in other fields) is mainly composed of baby boomers and green 22 year olds. As of yet they have brought up this issue, but have not proposed a time table for knowledge transfer sessions or more appropriate training.

Great internship experience

Engineering Intern (Former Employee)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as an intern for less than a year

ProsGot to experience doing real work and not some busy work made up for an intern.
Traveled fairly often to various project sites to ensure that the crew were getting the parts and equipment they needed to get the job done.
HR put on a couple of field trips and activities for inters that were fun too.

ConsNone that come to mind.... well some of the online safety training is quite lengthy and dry.

Advice to Senior ManagementRespect and take care of all employees - this was true in my department, but not all departments.

Great company to work for

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric

ProsThis is a demanding place to work you will not get board. There are always something interseting going on every day.

ConsSometimes it is hard to work on the filed when it is raining or blazing hot. But I guess it is a part of the job.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore communication with stuff and also set clear goals and perspectives for future carer goals. Otherwise management is very helpful.

Wonderful

Materials (Current Employee)

ProsStability and ability to work overtime is great.

ConsThe company is not agile. Making a decision is like steering a cruise ship.

Good pay and work isn't too hard

Field Intern (Former Employee)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric

ProsThe company offers good pay and the work can be pretty fun, especially during the summer when there's a lot of fieldwork offered throughout California. The benefits and vacation times are also very reasonable and what you would expect for a huge utilities company.

ConsSometimes the work can be a bit slow and there might be times where you don't have much to do.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management can be really vague at times and should have better communication as to what they are looking for in their employees.

Great experience and resume builder

Intern (Former Employee)

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric

Prosgreat compensation
friendly coworkers
understanding supervisors
interesting and varied projects
satisfaction upon project completion
camaraderie
opportunities to network within the company and with its contractors
opportunities to rotate or switch between types of work once you are in
if you do great work you will be complemented

Consa very cyclical workload
some low level reviews can be rote and undersatisfying
sometimes work that is given to you is already behind schedule and you need to do your best to compensate for that loss
work-life balance is dependent upon the urgency and level of public scrutiny of the project

Advice to Senior Managementcontinue to offer interesting and varied projects for better employee satisfaction
consider increasing headcount to relieve the stress of already overloaded staff
