    Project Manager- Marketing

Current Contractor - Project Manager in San Francisco, CA

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

    Friendly work environment
Great location and pretty schedule with a decent pay rate.

    Cons

Too much micro managing at times with poor strategic planning
Its feels like a non profit instead of a large corporation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to know what to do with staff with respect to talent and skills.
You have a lot of talent people doing work that is beneath them.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

A stable work enviroment, not prone to wild market swings (i.e. no surprise layoffs, etc.) Excellent work-life balance for certain positions and departments. Benefits package is top notch. Opportunities to advance from within. Many employees have been with the company for 30+ years.

    Cons

Slower than most companies to adopt change, due to entitlment mentality and regulated environment. Management by consensus slows decision making process. Believe that 80% of the companies employees are Union, which creates it unique challenges or opportunities depending your position and views.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to focus on how to simplify process and proceedures across the board, and eliminate the amount of management layers required to make decisions (take action).

  3. Gas Operations Intern

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Full-time employees at PG&E are EXTREMELY willing to help you with anything you need. They treat you with a ton of respect and never did I feel like an intern. The company also really wants its interns to explore what they're interested. If you want to see gas operations, they'll take you to some gas compression/distribution/whatever station. You want to see hydro, they'll take you to see a hydro plant. You want to know more about a particular sector at PG&E? They'll get you a meeting with someone in the department. Need help with excel or programming for you internship? There's workshops for that that you can attend.

Being an intern at PG&E is really really great. You learn A LOT about the energy industry and they try to maximize you exposure so you know even more. I had a really great experience there and it's nice to work with people who love their job.

    Cons

There can be a lot of inefficiencies when you're working in the energy industry - so this isn't really PG&E specific. Also, the energy industry usually isn't at the forefront of technology and you'd be surprised how outdated some of their systems are. But again, this is just the way it goes in the industry, which in some ways can be good because it means there's a lot of room for improvement and you can work on making those.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're doing great! I really felt like family working in the office and have positive experiences with everyone I worked with.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric

    Pros

Great company to work for, smart co-workers, good life and work balance, friendly people.

    Cons

Old school technology, takes forever to implement something, no interaction with the leaders, contractors don't get treated that well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My manager is great, but to the managers above him please involve contractors a bit more in company activities. I know we are disposable, but don't make us feel that way

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Feelings about the company as a whole are very positive and there are a huge amount of opportunities within the company if you are ambitious and happy to move around. There are many development & training opportunities. If you are happy to stay put in a particular job as well, there are lots of folks doing just that. There is a feeling over working towards a valuable goal (providing energy to the bay area) and many of the employees are generous, friendly and helpful. HR will tell you your pay bracket if you ask after an offer. Pays well for certain fields, but not as well for others.

    Cons

Politics are huge. The other comment on how evals & STIP are done is true, which can be frustrating. The hardest workers and biggest producers are not always rewarded. It often feels like the directors are trying to further their own careers at the expense of yours. Messages from upper management are overwhelming and inconsistent and hard to enforce. RDO, telecommuting, & flexible schedule options for management employees are talked about a lot, but offered inconsistently and not generally the norm. At every level, the focus is up at the next level of management, and not down towards employees. In many departments, there are very few women in leadership positions. Women are offered lower pay, less promotional opportunities and are often treated as second class citizens.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want young talented workers, be more flexible, or you will lose out especially as the economy heats up. Focus on employee engagement over metrics (quality work will follow). Use feedback to get results rather than just collecting it.
