I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great people and great benefits. Lots of opportunity depending on where you work.

    Cons

A company that makes a profit sometimes has trouble seeing the value in investing in infrastructure NOW to save MORE money LATER.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in Electric Transmission system! You can't bookmark us against other utilties when you don't invest in your system the way those other utilities do.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The operational groups (Electric, Gas, Energy supply) are exceptional areas of the company with dedicated employees capable of world class achievements.

    Cons

The General Office support groups (Human Resources, Information Technology, etc.) face challenges in their current structures and capability to effectively support the operational lines of business. IT in particular is experiencing high management and employee turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The culture of GO does not align to the stated core values of the company. This is in distinct contrast to the operational units that make up the utility.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric for more than 3 years

    Pros

Plenty of work and if you show interest management will generously allow employees to expand their skills within the group by offering involvement in a variety of tasks and projects. Teamwork is abundant as is also a positive environment. Executive management communicates with employees often and takes an active role in understanding things from an employee level.

    Cons

Backwards hiring and promotion process in some areas. While it seems like much of the rest of the world is getting on board with hiring the person and training the skills, PG&E is a test based hiring and promotion process in many departments. The tests aren't impossible but unnecessary because if the person is already doing the job well then it would seem that a test would be a waste of valuable resources that could be better spent in conducting a better interview and/or training.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The company provides a necessary and important service for society. People are generally smart and even-keeled.

    Cons

Strange mix of profit motive and regulated responsibility to the public interest. Can constrain business strategy and make strategy selection criteria difficult to prioritize.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In CES, our administrative staff is horribly overworked. The admin to staff ratio is far too low which means I spend time doing low-value activities that are way below my pay grade.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The people and challenges to tackle are tremendous. You get to work at a scale that's hard to match. There are great groups and organizations. Training, pay and work-life balance are hard to beat.

    Cons

There's just a tremendous amount of bureaucracy to make things happen. The organization excels at getting in its own way with continual reorgs and shifting priorities coming down from middle management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you really want to deliver a great customer experience, invest in our systems and put the right resources in place to deliver exceptional products and services.

    Pros

Super smart and friendly people, great growth opportunities, great leadership

    Cons

The SF PG&E offices haven't updated the dress code since the 80’s.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Update our dress code Its time! Dressy casual (Jeans dressed up) has arrived and works for literally every other successful company that surrounds us in San Francisco. Walking around the SF offices feels entirely old and stuffy! And it impacts the energy. An updated look will not only reenergize people but will attract a younger generation of employees.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The current CIO is taken this company from the dark ages into the present. She has quite a task. She is moving the company on all fronts - hardware, software, and governance. Overall leadership team is great - but is starting to see troubling turn-over . . . which makes one wonder the near future of the IT function.
Excellent benefits - decent work-life balance.

    Cons

The battle for dominance between IT and Business still exists. Business is still old school - with a tremendous amount of mis-trust, which creates a political environment that is sometimes hard to swallow. Promotion's are rarely merit - based, with incompetence rising faster to the top then competence. Director's are semi-gods, whether they perform or not. Lagging salaries as compared to other companies, and real life career development/chances for internal promotion - are minimal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company needs to drastically improve its HR function. This has been a longstanding issue - that both insiders and outsiders are aware off. HR still has the old school mentalities that outside is better than inside. Executive Management needs to change its culture for looking to the outside to fix its problems, and look at the wonderful talent base the enterprise has. Talent is leaving due to politics, lack of internal appreciation, internal promotion, and/or lagging compensation. In short - stop looking outside to fix internal problems - look inside
