I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There is something for everyone at PG&E. Regardless of your particular skill set, there is a job that is suited to you. Jobs range from clerical to engineering and communications to line repair. Whether you like routine, repetitive tasks or doing something different every day, there is a job at PG&E for you.

    Cons

Many community members are often annoyed/disgusted by the company. Whether it's Diablo Canyon relicensing, San Bruno, or just paying their monthly utility bills, people you'll meet every day in the community often have their own opinions about the company and will feel free to share them with you. Internal challenges, such as simply trying to do your job while also trying to comply with the myriad of rules, regulations, and management expectations can make the administrative side of the job very difficult, and will test your patience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company is getting too top-heavy. We've got more executives and vice-presidents than we know what to do with. We've got more work than we can possibly get done. All the while we're being told budgets are tight, we're spending too much on overtime, and we're overstaffed. We can't be overstaffed if we're all working too much overtime.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    - Their intern program is growing rapidly and not too hard to get into
    - They are projected to have nearly 300 interns next summer
    - Lots of "networking" aka fun bonding days
    - Good pay
    - Very nice people
    - Good benefits
    - Get to hear from top VP's and even the CEO and ask questions
    - Clear company vision with safety as a number one priority
    - Lots of people end up working here for a long time - I think the average tenure is approximately 18 years
    - Extremely stable because it's a utility company

    Cons

Personally, I didn't face any real challenges while working here. They do, however, not have the best reputation in the world, as the San Bruno incident is still pending charges. However, the company itself is extremely well-run and is doing everything in its power to make safety its number one priority.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Large stable company, good benefits with pension, years of expertise with colleagues. The company is very progress in the clean energy/energy efficiency work it does compared to many other utilities across the country. Most people who work there have been there for decades and have a wealth of knowledge, which is very valuable and a great resource.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic, overly regulated, very hierarchical and everything seems to move at snails pace. A lot of time on the job is spent on multiple regulatory requests and endless reporting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a little less risk averse.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

There are lots of hard working individuals in the company. They strive to do the best they can at every given moment. The pay and benefits are top notch, and vacation time is great.

    Cons

I had a chance to work in two different offices and experienced totally different work environments. As with every company there's always people that are too stubborn and high strung. Make lots of friends, but always protect yourself with emails the best you can. I wasn't as good as playing the game as everyone else so I decided to leave the company after falsified accusations placed on me. I still love the company, but a bad apple is a bad apple.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to be more in touch with employees. They are out of the office too much and don't understand what really goes on in the office.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

PG&E cares about their employees and offers many opportunities to grow and move. The office is clean and the pace is casual except during crunch time.

    Cons

It's a staid company. Many older employees waiting to retire. I didn't find the culture too exciting. Some days dragged on for hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know the employees and find out what would make PG&E a more exciting place to work.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Work life balance is great in certain roles and based on the manager a flex schedule is possible
    Salaries are competitive
Great service territory with lots of opportunities to move throughout the company and hold different positions in ones career
They offer a 75% match up to 8% of salary in 401k
Still offer a cash balance pension to new employees. Not as lucrative as the past final pay pension but you're only going to get that with the thieving government

    Cons

    Lots of competition for promotions
Company has had some major regulatory hurdles in the past 3 years
The legislation is giving unfair advantages to the utilities natural competitors

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fight back against unnecessary intrusive regulation , let the public know that rates aren't being driven up by the company's management but by the utopian idiots at the CPUC and state Capitol
