    Pros

The pay is good, and hours are flexible. If you want to have a stable place to work PG&E is the place for you.

    Cons

If you want to grow your career and continue your working knowledge technically, PG&E will stifle growth and promote mediocrity. The management on the IT side of the house have zero idea how to lead. They tend to micro manage most of the time and show very little interest in streamlining any of their long drawn out procedures. Hint, creating a runbook for GPO work is not realistic.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate the layers upon layers of leadership and talk with your technical staff. Those middle management supervisors do nothing for your forward movement and end up justifying their own existence by micro-managing everyone.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I interviewed twice (a year apart) and got offered a pre-apprentice lineman job. I am overly qualified for this entry level position. NLC grad, Class A license, NCCCO fix sswing cab. Army combay Vet heavy equipment operator. Grounds an ibew 3 months experience doing cut and kick in the distribution portion for pge on their property. Was currently making the equivalent of 120k+ a year as a crane operator.s. Had some speeding tickets, and explained it was a tough adjustment coming back home from my tour over seas, which was gnarly.

    Cons

They told me "You're just not looking as competitive". I saw 18-20 year old kids lacking all but NLC, barely any experience, and brown skin getting the job. Safety first. How about working with a Disabled combat Veteran first? How about giving me an opportunity that I had been working towards for over 3 years. I was working 60 hours a week and on my one day off I was driving 400+ miles to see my kids on Sunday, every Sunday. I don't enjoy being on the road like that it made me feel paranoid and vulnerable do to how routine it was, I was living in a rough part of Oakland and felt like i was being watched and followed. Got speeding tickets.

    Advice to Management

After Denying a Disabled Combat Veteran an opportunity to work for your company. And work hard! I showed up to work contracting for you with poison oak and sweat hard making all the Lineman look lazy.. Email him back explaining a little better why you cannot hire him? I understand that your company is all about looking good to the public and turning a profit because it is an investor owned Utility. After writing detailed and very humble letters to the head representatives of multiple positions (officers) asking for an opportunity to come and sweep floors for 6 months before taking me into the apprenticeship, please return that persons email.

    Pros

Great benefits, although they no longer have a traditional pension

    Cons

Management. Too many chiefs not enough indians to really do the job. They rather have a great powerpoint on how to do something rather than doing

    Advice to Management

Hire more workers and less directors and VP's

    Pros

There are some construction jobs and professional jobs within PG&E that are well paid with good benefits. It seems that there are long term employees in general that are loyal and stay long-term. Many in management have relatives they recommend for jobs at this company, so the environment seems "very connected." Sorry, but I would strongly suggest if considering employment here, check out the management if possible and see if there have been complaints - might be worth knowing.

    Cons

From what I experienced as a new employee, it was poorly managed, unorganized, and had no established processes or training for newer employees. One-week-new hire- employees were training One-day-new-hire employees. Work was haphazardly put together in order to meet deadlines. This was confusing. When a new hire made an error, the Supervisor could be pretty vicious in return to the person. A few permanent employees made complaints to Upper Management, but no action taken. Unfortunately, problems continued. People wanted to leave. There was intolerance from supervisor towards employees with a disability! Racist remarks were made against a black-male contractor by another employee, supervisor did nothing about it! Sorry, but I can't give this company a good review.

    Advice to Management

Upper Management needs to take employee complaints seriously. My advice to Management and the CEO, do not ignore employee complaints. If there is a problem brought before you, check it out thoroughly. Provide a safe "open door" to employees (both contracting and permanent) and allow them to talk about a problem without fear of losing their job. This would be a better solution than losing employees!

    Pros

Values are great, the concept is a great idea.

    Cons

Their directors don't support the values and if you speak up you will be written up. If you ask for support you are threatened with loosing your job. I think they placed some of their directors in a role they are not ready for.

    Advice to Management

Provide training to your directors if you really mean the values you talk about. You still have many employees that are very unhappy and being treated really bad.

    Pros

Last year I loved working for an intelligent engaged manager. I was re-orged into a group that has the worst manger I have ever worked for in my 30 years of employment.

    Cons

Continuing on with this horrible year, my current manager does not know what he is doing. He will give me an assignment and then change it in the next few days. He is ineffective, could care less about his employees and has not sense of what his group is about. The employees are very overworked and HR knows about the lack of sufficient resources for projects.

    Advice to Management

My group includes highly educated individuals. Senior management should listen to the employees and give them credit for exposing a manager that is one of the worst I have encountered. Ensure there are sufficient resources for projects.

Good Pay. Better than average benefits.

    Cons

The company is eager to back management even when faced with concrete evidence. Workplace violence is not taken seriously.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your workers, they may save you from safety issues and prevent violations.

    Cons

Work environment lacks cohesiveness/Opportunities not based on performance but Favoritism (Inc. Nepotism)/Supervisors are generally apathetic towards subordinates/Opportunities are intentionally stifled/High pay is often used as an excuse to demoralize & control/Reactive Work environment/The company views administrative employees as disposable

    Pros

Benefits are decent; definite decline in options over last 3 years; salary is average to below average. Company is large enough to where employees feel like they have job security but in reality job security doesn't exist

    Cons

Beauracratic, slow moving and very siloed. If you are a caucasian male with white hair (or balding) performing isn't necesary for promotion

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting people that tell you what you want to hear so much; the same white haired, male caucasian employees gets promoted over qualified others to frequently. The scary thing is with all of the accolades and awards on diversity there is one black VP and one latino EVP out of 50+ executives within the utility?? How embarrassing is that??
