Really Bad!!!!

Store Manager (Former Employee)
Columbus, OH

I worked at Pacific Sunwear

ProsEmployee discount is standard.
I personally got paid well, I don't think that is the case with most though.

ConsNo work/life balance.
For some unknown reason, the company is pushing out all of the talented managers. They are preferring to hire managers (at the store level and district level) that don't have enough experience to bring the company out of their less than favorable situation.
Sales are rough at Pac Sun, especially compared to similar specialty retailers.
Some are saying that Pac has the "Worst business model in specialty retail," I agree.
The way the company is going about turning over their tenured and experienced management staff is shameful. If you are considering a position with this company.....ask them what their management turn over rate was for last year......I bet they don't give you an answer. For one, the non-experienced managers probably don't know....and for two....they surely would not want to tell anybody if they did.
Successful retailers are hiring all of the talent that is leaving Pac Sun like crazy......Follow Pac Sun on Linkedin and you will see.
The company is attempting to cut costs through taking extreme labor cutting measures (more than your typical retailer). They continue to reduce the number of management employees in the field (which they do not publicize), making everyones job more difficult.
The visual team is CRAZY! They do complete floorsets multiple times every month....and they don't give you any hours to do it. They want stores to do "rolling floorsets," which are supposed to be completed during business hours. With single coverage and the obvious expectation that you not just engage, but start conversations with every customer and try to connect with each of them (talk to them and sell to them the ENTIRE time they are in the store), this expectation is not realistic.
Every season corporate comes out with some sort of "Plan to Win," which is typically a 50 page document that you have to fill out, with a game plan of how you are going to be successful each season and for EVERY holiday. These documents are pointless. Managers spend more time filling out the paperwork , rather than taking the actions necessary to impact their business. They are always confusing and senseless.
Being able to shift gears quickly is part of retail, but every week, corporate changes direction, asking you to change your schedules at the last minute. In the morning when you come into work, you will have a message saying that you have a HUGE markdown (like 12 hours worth of work), plus you are supposed to be working on a "rolling floorset," you get 25 unexpected boxes of shipment (that needs to be processed in 24 hours), and you have a window change and promotion change that needs to be completed. They expect you to get it all done before 10 am and you are on single coverage, but your the problem if it is not done.....not the unrealistic expectations.
Every time there is a corporate visit, DM's and RM's dump hours into stores (literally hundreds of hours in a week or two) to put on a front like this is what they store always looks like. They should be showing the leaders what it really is like to run one of these stores.
I am an unhappy former employee, but I speak the truth. The outsiders are correct when they say that "Pac Sun has the worst business model in specialty retail."
Anybody considering a position with this company, I recommend really knowing what you are getting into. Observe a store for a day, talk to the employees, ask the interviewing manager tough questions, or you may end up regretting it. I made $49,000 a year working at Pac Sun (much more than your typical Store Manager) and it was still the worst job I have ever had. Apply at Aero, Apple, American Eagle, Hot Topic......but not Pac Sun.

Worst career choice

Store Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Pacific Sunwear full-time

ProsHard to see pros in a business that is so unorganized.

ConsUpper management is unorganized and doesn't care about workplace environments. They make empty promises, and give you an crazy workload all along with one person coverage everyday! They unfortunately don't give you the tools to succeed. I used to love the brands image, and unfortunely the company has changed for the worse. Also many stores are closing left and right due to poop sales.

expectations are unrealistic with the resources provided to support the field.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pacific Sunwear

Pros- employee discount
- buying better brands and styles of clothing

Cons- corporate partners lack field experience as a manager (or if they do, have forgotten), therefore fails to create direction that is successfully translated and executed by the field.

- company has way to many stores across the nation but favors supplying resources and support to the southern calif. markets, yet has the same expectation of stores that don't share that same privileges.

- frequent heavy workload, no hours to execute. (only 1 person works the first half of the day and is expected to execute markdowns, transfers, shipment, promotion changes, rtvs, damages, visual changes, floorsets, window changes....on top of providing superb customer service and prevent theft)

- no passion from upper management with people development. (no on-boarding training for managers, no training hours for sales associates)

- lack of diversity

Advice to Senior Managementbe realistic.

show appreciation and understanding for the thousands of people who are working in the field trying to make sense out of some of the unrealistic expectations.

Run Away

Assistant Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pacific Sunwear

Pros-coworkers
-employee discount
-fun when working with people you like

ConsI have been in this company for 3 years, started when I was 16, promoted at 17. Back then it was a fun, laid-back, easygoing environment. The past year and a half have been absolute chaos. Upper management is absolutely ridiculous. Hiring DM's and RM's from abercrombie needs to stop. No knowledge of how to run a company properly and expect you to make gold out of dust. No payroll, but never-ending projects on a daily basis. One part coverage all week and expect sales to increase and shrink to decrease. Absolutely no recognition or praise, something is always wrong. You could work 50+ hours and they'd ask you why you didn't stay longer to finish something. No personal life, extremely hard to take time off. Constant emails, conference calls, promo updates/visual updates, procedures and policies, and all has to be done in an unrealistic time-frame. The worst place to work if you want to be happy.

Advice to Senior ManagementAcknowledge the work Management and staff puts in, we are not superhuman and can't complete so many tasks with one part coverage in a 2-hour time-frame. Do not expect unrealistic goals from everyone if you are not willing to work with us payrollwise. The turnover rate is insane, so why do you not see that everyone is miserable in this company and do something about it?

No work life balance, be prepared to be a slave.

Store Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pacific Sunwear

ProsThe people you work with are amazing and hard working. They offer a great discount and benefits. The music is awesome.

ConsNo payroll but maximum workload
No Recognition
Insane deadlines and lots of last minute changes.
They only care about making money, not about their people.

I worked 6 day work weeks, with 12-14 hour shifts and still my efforts weren't good enough. The pay isn't worth it. I would never recommend someone to work here if you want a life and your sanity. They have unrealistic expectations, but when you ask them for advice they have no answers and aren't willing to get their hands dirty to help you out. Be prepared to work by yourself most of the day, and be expected to get all your workload done, make numbers, take conference calls, and try to recover your store.

Be prepared for high turn over due to lack of payroll.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognition and constructive feedback would be helpful. Be willing to help or find the answers. Communicate something other than deadlines and negative feedback. Let us know we are doing something right once in a while.

Working at pacsun makes me a miserable person.

Assistant Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pacific Sunwear

ProsLaid back environment, flexible dress code, awesome co-workers, 30% discount, good music, flexible scheduling (for the most part), decent benefits

ConsThey pay terribly, they do not give raises, you are given close to no hours and are forced to run your store on single coverage daily, while completing shipment, markdowns, transfers, window changes, promo changes, keeping the store standards clean and still provide amazing customer service and get pro sales to keep your ads up.........associates are paid minimum wage with no raises meanwhile any other store will hire in at at least $8. They are expected to do it all and not get paid for it. I have a lot of hardworking brand reps that have been with the company for years without raises and they do way more than they get paid to do. Its disgusting. The company does not spend their money wisely. I thought it was obvious that rewarding your employees and giving them raises will keep them motivated and happy.....This company is a joke.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn how to properly spend your money, and go to college and learn basic management skills such as motivating your employees and treating them right. They deserve something for all the hard work they do for this company.

A little good, a lot of bad; mostly ugly.

Assistant Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pacific Sunwear

ProsThe atmosphere of the stores and the customers are top notch. The employee and management bond within stores is truly exceptional. However, so far as company loyalties, that's where it ends.

ConsThe main drawback to Pacsun is the complete disconnection upper management has with what's actually going on in the stores. The inability to make their product appeal to their target market effects sales and company viability. There have been many customers who have complained about the new direction Pacsun has taken. It seems the company as a whole is disenfranchising it's core customer base whilst minimally appealing to the new "higher fashion" one. The new sales model is obnoxious at best and almost impossible to effectively train. You can't expect high school BR's, who make minimum wage and get four hours a week, to seriously care about making PRO status. They're cutting cost in all the wrong areas i.e. the payroll matrix, pay-rates themselves, benefits, etc; then dumping that money into ineffective marketing ploys. Management turnover is outrageous, and it seems no one can figure out why. If you want to keep people who know what they're doing in the stores, you must pay competitive rates and give benefits and bonuses and so on. Promote people who know what they're doing instead of hiring "cheerleaders" to come in and brag about their $200 sale. It's not team motivation. It's self congratulation. And it seems that's the new face of the Pacsun manager. It's really sad when they can make a couple random big sales and brag on themselves and others, who choose not too, are overlooked or thought to be incompetent.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet out while you still can. There are many other places who pay and treat their employees fair.
