PB is gutting support staff, creating problems for professional staff

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsEnjoy working with intelligent co-workers, who enjoy a challenge and are strong team players.

ConsPB has moved IT, HR and accounting functions to Lancaster, PA. As a result, we've had huge turnover - computer systems are constantly down for repair, HR staff has no experience with PB process and the billing process has slowed to a crawl. No one has answers. It's hard to excel professionally when I'm getting bogged down with company functions that should be easy to handle.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to reverse the trend you've started in treating support staff like a commodity. Next you'll be treating professional staff like a commodity, the best swimmers will leave this sinking ship and the company will implode on itself.

Once good company has lost its way

    Senior Management (Former Employee)

ProsCompensation, smart technical people, broad geographic reach

ConsTotal lack of corporate vision and direction; CEO is an attorney so emphasis is on risk avoidance as opposed to providing great service; company reorganizes every 6-12 months; freeloaders are put on projects by managers to stay billable; company keeps high cost senior staff after badly screwing up projects to maintain them as friendly witnesses in court, thereby perpetuating poor performance; good ol' boy network keeps high cost "emeritus" executives on overhead while pounding project managers and laying off promising younger executives to cut costs; who you know matters more than what you know and how hard you work; resulting high overhead makes company less competitive.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo back to core values and business, evaluate why you keep people around

    Lots of bullsh*t

Associate Consultant II (Current Employee) New York, NY

ProsStill has a decent brand name in some regional markets. Very easy place to just check in and coast if you are lazy and looking for a life of leisure.

ConsPeople stealing each others clients and ideas. Lifers from mediocre places like Rutgers treating top recruits like idiots until they leave for somewhere else that pays more. A good place to go when you are fresh out of school and have 0 experience, but really not a place to build a career unless you have 0 self respect or expectations of fair treatment.

Stole the TEC model from Deloitte's way of doing consulting in the 80's but failed to reconcile it w/ their regional 'geography' approach that creates a lot of channel conflict with clients.

Advice to Senior ManagementLots of organizational fat in the hierarchy and huge diseconomies of scale. Cannot compete in the market place based on price, but also has failed to innovate. Will probably be out of business in the next decade.

    Not the same company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe people that are good are very good.

ConsManagement completely disconnected, you're treated like a number now, since Balfour Beatty bought PB, it's all about cutting costs, you're just an asset to be ground in until you're discarded.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend some time understanding how frustrating things are at the lower levels, get a strategy together that makes sense.

    Not what it once was

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsStrong technical skills of engineers. AWS schedule.

ConsManagement constantly changing. Constant re-orgs. Low pay.

Needs to catch up with the times

Project Manager (Former Employee) New York, NY

    ProsGood work-life balance
Great steady work-flow if you're part of the core business (design, engineering for highways, bridges and transit)

ConsCulture is old-school; lacking innovation, new energy and creativity
Lacking diversity among senior management; hardly any women and minorities at the upper echelons of the company
Upper Management needs to be comprised of mindsets that are more about leadership and management and less about engineering
    Advancement opportunities don't come easily
Difficult to find manager who will actually mentor you, champion you and help you grow
No consistent, transparent performance review process and system on which merit increases are based

Advice to Senior ManagementRead Sheryl Sandberg's book. Change compensation structure. Institute a solid talent acquisition, development and retention system. Cultivate a culture of developing leaders (and not just in the technical sense).

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
