I have been working at Partners HealthCare for more than 10 years

    Pros

Brilliant minds, interesting work, good benefits.

    Cons

Fundamentally flawed governance model. Lacks shared vision at corporate and institutional levels. Bureaucratic, indecisive, sluggish, demoralizing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Streamline governance. Align incentives for coordination at all levels. Rationalize decision making processes.

I have been working at Partners HealthCare full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Work with some amazing clinicians, good benefits, ok pay.

    Cons

Lots of stress, lots of almost mandatory OT. Upper management doesn't seem to care much about the staff. It's drifted away from it's "family" feel. Pay rates could be better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend some more time listening to your staff and not pandering to them. You can only work people to the bone for so long without so much as a simple thank you before they give up on you.

I have been working at Partners HealthCare full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Cutting edge healthcare issues
Mission-driven focus, sense of true purpose
    Committed to providing top-quality care
    Extraordinary hospitals and providers
    Great colleagues
    Challenging, motivating work

    Cons

Culture varies greatly among hospitals and departments; hard to feel part of the "whole"
Underlying tension/discomfort between Partners and hospitals
Extremely varied opportunities for advancement, from a lot in some areas to none at all
Lack of connection between stated values and actions
Constant discussion of budget cuts while employees very overworked, trying to fill in gaps
Managers not always suited for positions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better, more transparent communication to employees, even if unfavorable news
Find a way to address tension between Partners and hospitals openly; not discussing does not make it disappear; makes it harder to accept Partners' vision
Evaluate management more carefully, 360 reviews, etc.

I worked at Partners HealthCare full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Training, schooling and on-line classes was available and encouraged. Some compensation available.

    Cons

The work load is tremendous and impossible to do within specified hours. You are expected to complete all tasks even if it means you stay after hours. You are NOT compensated for extra work. You must choose to keep your job or lose it by blowing the whistle. Most choose slavery to keep their position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to employees. In many ways, Partners is a fantastic place to work and learn, but you are insanely overworked ad undercompensated. The more stress, the more errors.

I have been working at Partners HealthCare full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

PHS provides great benefits - health care, dental,STD,LTD. For new graduates a good place to learn for a few years but in order to advance your career you will need to go elsewhere. Work/Life balance - work from home - most people are gone by 5pm.

    Cons

The pay is below market for many position - the benefits help to off-set this for some. Unfortunatley there are not many opportunity to advance your career at PHS - you can get to middle level and then there is no where else to go but out. Tuition reimbursement is horrible - PHS tends to promote people who are not qualified for the job then wonder why the person failed terribly - continue to make this mistake over and over. Do not hold people accountable they just move them were they do less damage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To continue a productive work force you should focus on reducing your non performers - hold people accountable for their job responsibilities. Make sure the individual has the competencies to be effective in their role at PHS. It only makes more work for others when you hire or keep the wrong people.

I have been working at Partners HealthCare full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Starting to do flex hours and work from home, good training, fair salary.

    Cons

Don't care about employees. Raises are under cost of living, ALWAYS, even with good reviews. Way too many bosses, too few workers. Impersonal. It's all about what you can make people think you do and not what you actually do. And to that point, meetings, meetings, meetings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire some more people and stop working those still there into the ground.
