I have been working at Party City full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Co-workers are great. Work space is new clean and updated.

    Cons

Management treats you like low life. Steal your ideas. Out for themselves. Back-stabbing. Low pay. Cut throat. Make you fear them to keep your job. HIGH turnover with employees and especially with upper management. Do as I say not as I do mentality. Not a team effort atmosphere. Unhappy employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You're all out for yourselves. Boy's club. Backwards thinking. Your employee's know more about the business than you do. Stop stroking your own ego's. If you're not with them-your nothing. They work with you but don't care to remember your name. Training stinks for employees. Lack of professionalism from upper management. Try working with and seeing what your employees do for their job's. Maybe you would have a better understanding of what our jobs are like instead of putting unrealistic expectation's on your employee's.

I worked at Party City part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Coworkers are always helpful, manager is great to work with and it's fun to work there.

    Cons

Worked too hard and not enough appreciation or pay, Got really bad back problems after a month of working there (I'm young). After that month, they started cutting back hours, I only got about 10 hours a week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More hours would be helpful, and a little more pay would also be helpful, should have benefits for people that are part timers.

    Scare tactics and terrible management..

I worked at Party City part-time for less than a year

    Pros

At first my job at Party City wasn't bad at all! My interview was extremely easy and fast paced. All of my coworkers (except my managers) were very nice and welcoming, I felt very welcome and became good friends with all of them. Overall, the job was very easy but not rewarding at all.

    Cons

#1 con for working at party city was the terrible management. The general manager was almost never in the store and I had no real connection with him. As for the other assistant managers, from the start they were VERY unprofessional. While I was being trained for blowing up balloons my manager would often warn me about doing balloon orders on time, I tried my best to do everything right but later that day I made a mistake on forgetting to do something that was part of the order, she told me "I've made multiple people cry for making that mistake you just made. Don't do it again" She often used scare tactics and embarrassed the staff in order for them to not make the same mistake again. The way that they trained me was so terrible and I felt ashamed whenever I did something wrong. They never encouraged you, they never told you what you did right. All they ever did during training was shame and embarrass you for a mistake and I think that is just so terrible and not right.
The hours can be pretty late, especially during Halloween. I worked in a mega store and it was absolutely enormous, they had 2 people every night clean and organize the store in under one hour. They always under-staff during closing but expect you to do everything perfectly or else you'll get scolded for it. I honestly felt scared while I worked there, the managers were so power-hungry and were so unbelievably rude.
Also, the job has very low pay with practically no benefits, only a 30% discount is included. I never want to buy anything from this terrible company. It is just another money hungry company that expects so much from it's employees but give so little for the hard work they have done. Never going back there again, do not recommend the job to anyone! Retail is just terrible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop disrespecting your employees and focus on how they could improve. Nobody wants to work for a company that shames and embarrasses you for every mistake you make.

I have been working at Party City part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The managers were extremely nice and understanding, they were flexible with my school schedule which I loved! They had great employee discounts and it was fun working during halloween. Their system for the cashiers is very simple, and so is freight (where you restock the shelves and items making sure the SKUs are correct).

    Cons

I didn't get as much training, it was difficult to catch up at first. They trained me for one day and left me alone the next day. I also knew nothing about balloon bouquets. I was honestly confused the whole time and just went with the flow. I had to constantly call the team leaders or manager to help me out with returns or angry customers. One thing i also disliked was being left alone and being new, with 7 angry customers was stressful.. I would call someone to come up and help but it took them awhile to come to the register. Also hated how some of the other associates who have been working there longer than I would look down on me and the new associates. Making us feel as though we are dumb and dont know how to do our job (well we were new so of course we don't know as much as they do). If you make one mistake, they hold it against you. when they should be trying to help us and be a team. but one major con for me was the BALLOONS!!! I HATED THE BALLOON ORDERS AND HATED MAKING BALLOONS PERIOD, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAD LIKE 15 CUSTOMERS WAITING FOR YOU....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. better training for new associates; rather than just training them one day and throw them onto the floor alone the next day. Have some days of training, it was stressful being new and having to constantly call the team lead up to the register to help out.

    2. Have an experienced balloon person/cashier. Some costumers believe that the associates there are expert balloon makers, but honestly some have never blown a balloon up in their life. Have at least 1 experienced employee up in the front who will be in charge of balloons. Please do not leave it up just to that 1 cashier, it gets stressful, and costumers get very angry when having to wait a long time to pay for their stuff. Also they only trained me one day with balloons, and I was only there for 4 hours...then the next day I was left alone and had to make balloon bouquets by myself. it's hard.

I have been working at Party City full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Pay is fair (salaried) for General Manager but your value will be severely diminished when your directed and required to work 6- 7 days a week. Bonus potential is good. Halloween is their Christmas so your actually able to take time off during the holiday season to enjoy your family (which is unheard of at the store level in retail). 5 paid personal days and paid holidays including 2 additional floating holiday days. Benefits package is good. 30% employee discount. Other than during Halloween, store hours are good. Close at 8:30 and 9pm thru Monday thru Saturday, 6pm on Sundays. General Managers don't work Sundays except during Halloween or unless directed too. You will meet some great hard working people. Helping customers plan their parties. Seeing the excitement in the childrens eyes when they come in and get their stuff for Halloween and their birthday parties.

    Cons

Upper Management (Field and corporate level) manage thru fear. It's always criticism and what your doing wrong. Most managers in the stores are fearful of losing their job. There is no structured training program for managers. No opportunity for advancement above the GM level. Individual development program is a fallacy and are penciled whipped (There is never any time to work on them). Nepotism runs rampant. Heavy physical workload. Heavy ladder work. Held accountable over different standards. Perform the same tasks 3 or 4 times before the company gets it right. You will always be putting out fires. You can plan and plan and plan, but your planning will never go as planned. You will always be behind and playing catch up on merchandising, pushing freight, and other manager functions. You will be constantly changing things. Add working the DM walk notes which are pages at a time to your responsibilities. Part-timers are not allowed to be scheduled more than 20 hours a week (at minimum wage) with no health coverage which results in high turnover and being forced to hire high school minors. You will always be understaffed. Halloween is their Christmas so all managers (especially salaried General Managers), be prepared to work 6-7 days a week, open to close to stay caught up or until it's complete. Be prepared to lose sleep at night thinking about how your going to get everything they want accomplished done within their expectations. This is a privately held company so everything at the corporate level is a secret. It's such a struggle to keep morale high. You will feel embarrassed and ashamed come review time when you sit down with one of your associates and tell them what a great asset they were so here is your 3 cent raise. There are so many great people that work in the stores. There are so many that want out but are either afraid to leave (because they've been there so long) or won't find anything else and are stuck in a dead end miserable career with no end in sight.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look in the mirror and ask yourself if you could live up to your expectations. Ask yourself if you could work under the above conditions. Ask yourself if you would be happy under the above conditions. There are so many great people that work for your company who are physically and mentally exhausted. Stop abusing them and start taking care of them.

    Pros

Fun to work there, get to interact with kids, pretty easy to do this job. Anybody cando it. Taught me alot about customer service and retail.

    Cons

Anybody can do it. This company is only interested in hiring high school kids.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just stop putting employees on the schedule. You can get in serious trouble for that. Especially while they're pregnant!

I have been working at Party City full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fun work environment, generally friendly coworkers, samples sales, several holiday parties per year.

    Cons

Management doesn't seem to recognize when you go above and beyond - that is automatically expected. Constant re-doing of work because management changes their minds. Micro-managing/ unrealistic expectations for timelines given. Dates often move up and extra time needs to be put in to accomplish goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More thought should be given to some of the changes demanded at the last minute - if it will ultimately be beneficial to stores, that makes sense but often, the changes are "just because" and create chaos, drastically multiplying workloads for the current project and future projects. Processes need to be streamlined and adhered to by everyone, more discipline for those that are careless or ignore processes - the additional workload created by broken processes is extreme. It should be the exception, not the norm.

I have been working at Party City part-time for more than a year

    Pros

There are only a few good things I can say about working here. The employee discount is great, I like most of the people I work with and I was able to work my schedule around school.

    Cons

The pay is horrible and the yearly raises are an insult. One of my managers told me how much she makes after working for the company for many years and I was shocked... Less than $9 an hour after working there for over 10 years is crazy! This is also the first place I have worked where you do not get breaks other than your 30 minute lunch. You can work a 9-10 hour day and only get a 30 minute lunch... that's is.
