I did youth development work from 2011 to 2013 in rural Morocco.

    Youth Development Volunteer (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsPeace Corps work is as hands-on as it gets! I enjoyed teaching English as a Foreign Language to all ages and levels of learners and leading critical skills development programs with youth, especially young women.

ConsThe high turnover innate to the Peace Corps allows for some gaps in the programming. I was unfortunate to be trained for my service during one of those gaps, which left me quite uncertain how to begin my service. It was an obstacle I overcame.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would advise management to nominate volunteers on the basis of their expertise and place them accordingly.

Be there for the right reasons

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat international experience, helps build a really strong network, and the training helps you develop hard-skills.

ConsYou are a volunteer, so the pay is small, but manageable to live on.

    Once in a lifetime opportunity.

Volunteer Food Security Coordinator (Former Employee)

ProsIt was truly an experience to be able to develop your own agenda and participate in the planning and execution of said project from start to finish. Where else where you be able to have complete autonomy of your desired work program? Plus, you get to make contacts in countless international organizations.

ConsThe pay is obviously lacking, and the work does not always translate into a job.

ProsThis was the hardest, most rewarding job that I have ever had. Through this experience I learned a knew language, was able to work with a completely different culture and learned how to handle set backs.

ConsSometimes dealing with the federal government was a hassle. The communication between the field and Washington was often times delayed and confusing.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Hardest job you will ever love

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsTravel, culture and opportunity. It is a great way to meet people with similar interests and a travel the world. You become part of a community in service and at home.

ConsYou are poor. You will miss your family. You are poor. As a government agency working with volunteers safety and security is a high priority and so often times you may feel as though you are being babied.
