Pentair -- "Lean" in so many ways...

Power Vertical Team Member - From Tyco (Former Employee)

I worked at Pentair full-time for more than 10 years

ProsWide Products offering for wide variety of Industries worldwide.

ConsThe acquired Tyco Valves & Controls and stripped it, which increased the bottom line and stock price, but will definitely stymie future growth -- perhaps they will begin selling off the Tyco factories and companies?

Advice to Senior ManagementSupport your global manufacturing facilities with technically sharp Sales groups of industry professionals -- like all the folks you either laid off or drove off. Or else sell of the Tyco companies before you have to shut their doors.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

I'm sure it will change more after the Tyco acquisition.

IT Manager (Former Employee)
Sheboygan, WI

I worked at Pentair full-time for more than 10 years

ProsRelatively stable company in most areas. Good benefits. Acquisitions can provide some opportunity.

ConsCost cutting may result in more facility closures like the one I worked for and there is limited movement among divisions so upward movement was uncommon while I was there.

Interesting work, but could be challenging because culture was changing

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I worked at Pentair

ProsSmart people
Good products
Ability to drive change and make improvements
Interesting project work
Performance driven culture
Good pay and benefits

ConsMinimal recognition given
Company seemed to be going through an identity crisis: Are we a (decentralized) holding company or a (centralized) operating company?
Lots of process inefficiencies and waste
Leadership could be short-sighted at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementThink bigger picture. Invest in long-term solutions that yield strong ROI over time, rather than favoring short-term band-aid fixes that have a more immediate impact on bottom line, but aren't fixing the root cause.

Too process-driven, not result-driven

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I worked at Pentair

Prosdocumentation to capture data or other information

Consvery inefficient, tools that used corporate-wide are designed by people who don't have to use it daily

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more result-driven

Could be a great company but...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pentair

ProsGood pay and good benefits

ConsUpper management is detached from business - poor communication of changes

Advice to Senior ManagementContstant reorganizing without letting anything take hold is causing massive disruption to business. In a better economy, many people would be leaving.

DECENT COMPANY

Design Engineer Trainee (Former Employee)
Bangalore (India)

I worked at Pentair as an intern for less than a year

ProsInformation is not suppressed or distorted, so people can find out what they need to know to do their work.
Individuals are given meaningful chances to grow, becoming more valuable to the organization in the process.

ConsPeople’s day to day work makes sense to them, and they understand how their own jobs fit in with everyone else’s.
And they are not hindered by stupid rules.

Advice to Senior Managementproper training to the employees

A company with tremendous potential, but only average performance due to bad management and politics

Senior Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pentair full-time for more than 3 years

ProsMostly nice colleagues, a lot of freedom to pursue own ideas, great team work, fair compensation, working in a growing sector (water)

ConsSilo thinking, too much politics, no recognition of high or low performance, knowing the right people or being in the right network most relevant, NO business strategy, only short term performance orientation, top management without any clue about the business/industry

Advice to Senior ManagementAct mor as entrepreneurs than investment bankers, enable lower management , stop celebrating Randy more than your customers

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
