    good while it lasted

I worked at PerkinElmer full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I worked in the Downers Grove location for many years. Most of the people I worked with were very competent and easy to get along with. The products were interesting. Was able to make most of the changes, improvements I thought would be best.

    Cons

The site was closed. We were told the location was doing well - one of the best in the company, so the decision to close it and move products to other sites did not make much sense to anyone.

    Advice to Management

Should think more of the individual contributor and the long term - seem to be short sited.

    Pros

Learned a lot of new skills, including mobile. Training was good. Worked with extremely high quality software developers and QA

    Cons

They do not have a good software vision. The management team is all over the place. Very little information is trickled down from the top to the developers. As a result you never know what is going on or where you are headed. Focus and goals and projects are subject to change out from under you, drastically, at literally at any moment. They just don't seem to know what their goal is...

    Pros

The products the company makes have the potential to positively impact people across the globe. Some room for mobility both physically (many offices around the world) and career-wise.

    Cons

A major lack of resources and a fixation on cutting costs and improving productivity has resulted in an overworked and under-supplied environment. Definitely an old-school company that still thinks spreadsheets can be used for everything.

    Advice to Management

Invest in hiring some talented people in roles that need to be filled (you've got enough PhD's please hire some people with real world experience and skills)

    Pros

The people who work at PE have their hearts in the right place and are generally very bright. The company promotes international travel and experience for its employees.

    Cons

Employees are often at the whim of a management team that changes direction too frequently to be effective over the long term. The management team also tends to talk in a supportive way about products, categories or businesses but not back that support with actions.

    Pros

The total compensation is quite competitive, and there are some great mid level managers. In addition, my department does have a great opportunity for personal growth and training available.

    Cons

Upper management has lost site of the importance of a positive company culture, and teamwork. There have been many bottom line cuts which have contributed to a loss of morale and innovation from the company as a whole. As others have stated, when there is a sole focus of the current quarter you will start to see a small negative effect on the bottom line in the future. Unfortunately, those losses are starting to mount and the general trend is currently in the negative direction.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be action to support your vision of building a positive company culture that promotes teamwork and innovation.

Acquire, then divest culture. Innovation by acquisition. Overall, not bad to work for.

    Pros

Strong corporate infrastructure, supportive when it suits the bottom line. Sometimes it gets in the way, though.

    Cons

Lack of long term vision for the company. Some decisions not well executed, but those who suffer are the ones who had no say in the execution. Gives lip service to innovation, but only interested when it is cheap and fast. Buying someone else's work is the favored approach. History of buying companies then ruthlessly closing facilities and asking those who are left to walk on water to produce the same as before. And if you are not cast in the PKI mold, you are not a favored child.

    Advice to Management

Really follow your corporate values and perform realistic and meaningful stratic planning. Then follow through and be patient. Do not try to impose what works in Boston, Waltham or Hopkinton on other types of operations, but both teach and learn. You're good at telling people what to do, but not so good at listening. Remember, ISO and all QUALITY management systems are based on say what you are going to do and then do what you say. That was a great weakness that I saw at PKI.

    Good people. Interesting products.

    Cons

Growth is by acquisition. Executive manangement is distant and distracted

    Advice to Management

Spend more time building a company and not a balance sheet

    Pros

PerkinElmer is very a structured work environment. They are clearly environmentally focused in their product and service offerings. If you are hired by PKI at the headquarters, you will find job security.

    Cons

If the company you work for is acquired by PKI, your operations will likely be transferred to their main facility in MA within 2 years.
