I worked at PerkinElmer full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Variety of resources. Lots of smart people. Good overall work environment and pleasant group of people.

    Cons

Company is not innovative. As a large company it is risk-averse and prefers to enter new areas via acquisition of smaller companies instead of growing capacity from within. This makes it a bit boring if you are interested in trying new things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Organic growth is as important as acquisitional growth.

    Pros

PE is a well-run and very focused company dedicated to developing and producing unique and excellent products that make a difference in patients' lives.

    Cons

If you are a company acquired by Perkin Elmer. Run for your life. The will shut you down and move you to Hopkinton. They invest nothing into R&D. They inquire companies and run the products into the ground.

I worked at PerkinElmer full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company is strong in several areas of Environment and Health
They have a wide portfolio spanning a broad set of sectors in both areas
OneSource is innovative and a potential asset

    Cons

Salaries are low in general, especially in the Boston area
Very much focused on the bottom line
    Reactive to quarterly performance
You have to wonder if they are spread too thin across somewhat disparate areas and seeing limited synergies across sectors. would a break up (as suggested by several analysts) make more sense at this time?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set the vision and don't let the last quarter cause reflexive reaction
Rewarding staff success needs to become a higher priority and better funded

I have been working at PerkinElmer full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Work with smart, dedicated people
Products created are for the betterment of people

    Cons

Reorg within the Life Sciences (LST) has killed confidence and enthusiasm
All company assets have moved to Boston area, limiting options for advancement
With all the restructuring, R&D progress is stalled and excitement of product creation no longer there

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication has been awful for the past 2 years. No one is confident in their position remaining in the next coming quarter

I worked at PerkinElmer full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good benefits, I liked and miss the people. I got the opportunity to do some interesting work there.

    Cons

Spending to much time writing reports and presentations. This time would be better spent working in the lab. Conflicts between instrument division and reagent division. Instrument Division wants to sell it's high margin products. Reagent division wants to sell their products. Combining instruments and reagent doesn't work well. New acquisitions watch for layoffs. I have been working at PerkinElmer

    Pros

It truly is a company you can believe in, we have a great purpose and make things better not for just people who can benefit from our products but for the users as well. We do a good job and it shows.

    Cons

VERY unfair on treatment between co-workers. Uneven pay scale and bonuses among same job titles. The glass ceiling seems so far very low and senior management seems to pacify WAY too much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open your eyes and stop biting the hands that are feeding you. Also learn to recognize people a bit more and stop pacifying people and actually listen to them and act.

I have been working at PerkinElmer

    Pros

Most of the people I have worked with were intelligent and professional. The product brand is well known and respected in the industry. Current president of LAS is a great leader and respected within customer circles.

    Cons

Some people in leadership/management are stretched too thin with reporting to develop their direct reports. Many of the products sold are "me too" and were not the first to the market. Key investments are made that do not benefit all or a majority of customer markets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize and promote employees who deserve it. Find R&D projects that can produce a product for ALL customers big and small.
