In my position, I found Pervasive (now Actian) to be a good place to interact with good people and do rewarding work.

I worked at Pervasive Software full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Annual salary increases, a very fair bonus program and other perks, free training in many areas, relaxed environment with casual dress, and for me, the opportunity to use my skills and many years' of experience.

    Cons

Like all tech companies, Pervasive experienced constant turnover during the seven years I worked there, so that as soon as I had gotten accustomed to an existing set of co-workers' personalities and work styles, along came new people bringing lots of changes. It took resilience and flexibility to work in this ever-churning environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'm unable to say what it's like now because with the 2013 purchase of Pervasive by Actian, management has totally changed. But in the seven years I worked there, I found Pervasive to be a very good company to work for, and I'm grateful for my promotions, salary increases and opportunities.

    Cons

    Merger, downsizing were unsettling
    Some disorganization in other departments
Some management more interested in power plays and personal credit than in productivity or teamwork

    I worked at Pervasive Software

    Pros

The family culture was great, lots of growth opportunities during the good times. Made a lot of money on stock options over several years.

    Cons

The 2004 management change was a change for the worse. More recent change was good - John Farr was an excellent CEO.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    No advice.

I have been working at Pervasive Software

    Pros

    1. Employees are great people, hard workers, and very team oriented.
    2. Data Integration has widespread pain through multiple companies and companies are eager to use software platforms, like Pervasive, to solve real problems.
    3. Fun environment, fun atmosphere
    4. Great work/life balance, along with the potential to make high 6 figure compensation.
    5. Minimal micro-management, entrepreneurial attitude, high professional growth.

    Cons

    1. As the business grows, or new products are developed, infrastructure needs to grow or respond to growth faster.
    2. Job/Performance feedback needs to be more structured and more consistent.
    3. More defined career growth or plans for career growth. There are a lot of opportunities internally for career growth, but no defined path.

A stable company with good products and a lot of good people, but inconsistent senior management.

I have been working at Pervasive Software

    Pros

Pervasive is fiscally conservative and it shows in their debt free asset rich standing. As a whole they treat there employees well. Many of the employees have been there a long time or have returned after an excursion at other employers. That is a testament to the atmosphere of the company.

    Cons

Senior management varies in quality across divisions. There are visionaries, some functionaries, and some truly toxic individuals. It is often up to middle management to bridge the gap or provide insulation for their teams.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Embrace your values rather than (very) briefly acknowledging them once a quarter. Then apply those values in your estimation of senior management. Those values are widely held among the rank and file and middle management despite the inconsistent embrace by senior management. You have a lot of great people and great product but they are held back form being their best in some situations by their leaders.

I have been working at Pervasive Software

    Pros

Good office location and very good working environment. Diversity of work exposes you to many cutting edge technologies. Managers regularly show group appreciation.

    Cons

Never know where you stand with respect to performance. Training opportunities are rare. Limited advancement. Although Company is profitable (a great thing), revenue consistantly flat, even with good products.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Company revenue growth would seem like a good thing. The products are very good. But flat revenue growth for years? It seems like something, "the word" does not get out about the company and its products. Its almost as if senior management wants to stay a small company.

I have been working at Pervasive Software

    Pros

So far is a great place to work- I feel like part of a team. Love the friendly competition between divisions.

    Cons

I haven't been here long enough to form an educated opinion about the cons. I will edit as a get more experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I've noticed that the higher up you go the communication gets better. Down in the lower ranks- it is little to none.
