Overall I really enjoy my job, but corporate issues are having a significant impact in our stores.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I enjoy my everyday job as a Pet Care Associate. I take care of all of the animals in our care and have learned a great deal in the year I've been employed with this company. It is great for a company to spend a lot of time on training employees to not only properly care for the animals in our care, but to educate customers as we send them home with their new pets.

    Cons

You may work very hard for the company, but pay rates and raises don't match your efforts. Specific to the Pet Care department, I've unfortunately observed a lack of interest in health issues of some of the animals we are responsible for in higher level management.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I have worked for PetSmart for about three years and really enjoy working there! They were absolutely wonderful about working around my school schedule while I was in college and my schedule was crazy! I've worked at two different stores in the three years I've been with the company, and have found that both stores are different, mainly because of the different managers and their management styles. I have really enjoyed working with the pets as well as the pet parents! PetSmart does give a 15% discount to employees, which I have found extremely helpful since I have a dog and now a fish. Everyone is willing to pitch in and help out, especially when the registers get backed up!

    Cons

The biggest challenge I have found working there is the speed which you have to be able to work. It is a bit faster than I am comfortable working, but I have managed to do well there. I wish I had regular hours, but since it is a retail job, I understand that's not possible.

I have been working at PetSmart

    Pros

Great company if you like working with animals. Also, there are many stores throughout the country if you ever need to transfer.

    Cons

The company has recently started cutting back on hours to be more profitable. This has led to low employee morale.

    Pros

Ability for dog lovers to work exclusively with dogs and management is employee-friendly; great benefits; can move into management if so desire.

    Cons

Positions are limited and little room for expanding compensation in certain areas. Huge corporation, so limited a bit by company policy and procedure.

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Petsmart can be a fun place to work depending on who your management team is. The customers are usually very nice to work with and love their pets. It's always fun to be able to see all of the dogs that come into the store. Petsmart provides good benefits for the full-time associate - health, dental and vision with a good vacation package.

    Cons

Terrible hours, no life/work balance, always working weekends and holidays. The salaried managers work 50+ hours/weekly and are expected to work more if necessary. The pay for most associates is extremely low for what is expected and even the hourly managers are paid poorly for the amount of work they are expected to do. Never enough associates on the floor and yet the customer service is expected to be stellar. Always cutting hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You get what you pay for. If you would pay your associates and managers a decent wage, your turnover wouldn't be as high and you would create more loyalty among the staff. Give the salaried managers at least a decent work/life balance, i.e. holidays off would be nice. Provide enough hours to actually staff the stores so that the customer service can meet the expectations of corporate.

    Pros

Easy to learn duties, pretty easy to pick up shifts. Great atmosphere, easy job to get. Work with your schedule for school or other jobs. Decent starting pay, regular raises. Closed on most holidays. Awesome job for anyone who loves animals.

    Cons

Not easy to move up within the company, or become full time. Tend to do a lot more duties than what you should have to in regards to what your pay is.

Has gone downhill the last few years, but can still be a good company if you work at the right store.

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It's a lot of fun working with animals. And while I've said a lot of things in the cons, some times it can be rewarding. If you get a great store manager it makes all the difference, as they definitely make it fun to go to work.

    Cons

Recently corporate has made a shift in how many hours the store gets. They cut back our hours drastically. Before last year hourly managers used to work 45 hours a week minimum, so we got 5 hours guaranteed overtime. They cut our hours down to 40, their reasoning being we could spend more time outside of work with family/friends. They were supposed to raise our hourly rate to compensate for the cut in hours/overtime (so we would be paid exactly the same, but work 5 hours less a week). Well, that didn't happen. They definitely raised the rate, but not to compensate completely. I'm making less money than I was before, and almost every week I still end up getting a few hours of overtime. I'm also working harder since I have to do the same amount of work as before, but in less time.

Also the store managers definitely vary. You can have a great store manager or you can be stuck with a terrible one. And while they talk about opportunities for advancement, it doesn't happen very often. A lot of time the store managers don't promote people in the various departments to lead positions, and it often takes months for any kind of promotion to go through.

There's also a lot of pressure to get things done in time, and most of the time the deadlines are unrealistic with the amount of help we now have.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the store a fun place to work at. Talk to your associates more often and tell them how much of a good job they're doing. Don't bend to every whim of the district manager. And give us the proper amount of hours to do our job.

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You get benefits right away if you're full time. You don't have to wait 90 days like at most places. People are pretty friendly and willing to help. Safety for animals is really the top priority. Most schedules are pretty flexible. Extra pay for overnight shifts. Paid holidays. 2 personal days in addition to vacation and sick hours. Customer are way better than typical retail customers.

    Cons

Every year. they cut hours drastically but expect double the work. Overtime is frowned upon, but Especially in critical areas like stocking, customer service and cashiering. Pay is not competitive and not worth the stress. Promotion only seems to happen if you know the right person or you suck up enough to the right person. Not sure if store issues really get rolled up to executives because every store manager wants to be a hero. Company seems to look outside to fill management positions instead of grooming/working with associates to be ready for those positions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your staff!! Don't assume that things don't get done because your people are lacking, it really could be the process. Although it's a challenge because there is so much direction given, take time to develop your people. They really could be the next leader in your store.
