I have been working at PetSmart full-time for more than a year

    Pros

love having the chance to work with animals. good pay

    Cons

managers require you to work off the clock in order to do a certain number of dogs a day policies are not followed, company is more interested in how much money they can make then doing a good quality job many dogs were cut or injured due to too many dogs being pushed on groomers just to make quota. training was minimal at best and work environment was very unprofessional with groomers swearing at dogs and talking about customers and other employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

management needs to be trained to follow policies and treat employees professionally and respectfully.

    Pros

    Bringing your pet to work

    Cons

Unless you drink the Kool-Aid you are not allowed to be yourself or have your own ideas. They glamorize all the buyers and don't give credit where credit is due. The Buyer Techs do ALL the work. The buyers make WAY too much money for what they do (and they are wondering why the are in a current crisis!) There are too many hands in the cookie jar and too many people are involved in simple decisions. The HR team is the WORST possible HR team in the history of any organization. There are no checks and balances and they are the worst offenders of "doing the right thing." I would never look to HR for any sort of guidance. They create postions for the most onscure jobs but can't pay the people who actually do a real job more money

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop making the management team appear as "celebrities."

I worked at PetSmart full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great opportunity to work with people who share your same love of animals. That's about it.

    Cons

Poor management. Treated poorly. Manager tried to get me to quit by giving me 4 hours a week. When this didn't work, he made up blatant lies about things my co-workers were saying about me behind my back. When I started there were 12 groomers in the salon, when I left a year later, we were down to 2. All because of the general manager's choices and poor treatment of employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't make up stories about your coworkers. Don't play dirty. If you say you're going to promote someone--do it. Don't lie. Don't make people feel small. This is by far the most insulting and condescending place I have ever worked.

I have been working at PetSmart full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Fun to interact with customers and their pets when you get the opportunity to do so. You will learn about how to better care for pets in a way that makes the company more money.

    Cons

Extreme micro management. Cult-like culture. Little actual care shown for associates, but lots of corporate programs that are unrealistic at the store level to provide the smoke and mirrors. Solution to everything is work faster.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trim the sales events back a bit. It is not necessary to always give people more than they can handle to get the most from them. Try having them master managable workloads - it might provide for better customer service. Allow managers to think a bit outside the tight confines of your P&Ps. EMPOWERMENT is not a dirty word. PETCO's marketing is blowing yours away.

I worked at PetSmart part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Starting pay is higher than minimum wage.

    Cons

Managers who do nothing but sit in the office all day. Managers who pit associates against each other and encourage backstabbing. Open door policy my foot. Retaliation will never happen? BULL! Promotions? Oh sure as long as you got your nose stuck up the Store Managers Butt! Disagree with anything and get knocked down from 36 hours a week to 20, get sick and have to call off of work..you will be lucky if you work 1 day the following week. The OPS actually brags about how they do this to retaliate for the person calling off of work. Now that's really professional! (yes, that is sarcastic)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Its a shame, I thought this would be a great company to work for, but I was wrong. They care more about their money then they do about the animals and their employees. Monitor your store management more closely. When someone calls the DM about a issue and the care line, how about taking them seriously instead of taking the word of the Store Manager (who coincidently was just asked to step down from Store Manager) and never talking to the associate about the issue.

    Pros

good to learn about pet care and certain foods and pet needs.

    Cons

not very good pay or hours

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

need to work on very good customer service skills, communication within the grooming salon everything seems to be chaos. you need to reach out more as well. show you like doing what you do don't have an attitude. doesn't matter if you're a customer or an employer nobody likes having to deal with somebody with an attitude no matter what side you're on

I worked at PetSmart full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Overall the company is for a lack of a better word good the people are friendly and the assoiciates are nice and there are an exceptional few that will lend a helping hand.

    Cons

The lack of training I was responsible for one of the biggest fish systems in the district which ultimately cost me my job. The system is Massive with so many valves and pumps and other things they basically hand you a book tell you watch a video and then expect you to be an expert on how the system works down to every single valve in the system. When i got there the fluidized bedding wasn't working 2 of the 4 pumps were broken barely functioning and the previous pet care manager was doing counts incorrectly to boost his scores and to not effect loss. Also zero patience had been done to the machine as they had claimed it to be "very delicate" which wasn't the case it's just that they had established so much bacteria in the system that after properly cleaning the system it cause the system to cycle. Which any person with fish knowledge knows that when you have a dirty filter that's got bad bacteria built up and then you fully clean something on the system it's going to typically cause a cycle to happen and when that does happen yes your more delicate fish may pass due to this but ultimately the system will benefit and work properly after. I just find it funny as the petcare department after my termination, the system was back up and running 100% and i have reports from a associate who told me the loss went massively down after the issues I had addressed and fixed on the system were done and corrected that the water levels became perfect and ideal for the fish system they currently are unhappy with the system and also are in the works of removing it and replacing it, go figure maybe because it should have been done 15 years ago when the system became out dated? overall the company is very picky i personally would go back if they'd have me but would want to have extensive training on the system. Other thing is the managers are all to concerned with making bonus and wont order supplies and or do the right thing towards the end of the quarter. animals will go without food or clean bedding sometimes just so that they can get a bonus at the end of the quarter i found this to be a horrible practice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

STOP WORRYING ABOUT YOUR DAMN BONUS'S AND DO THE RIGHT THING.TRAIN PROPPERLY DO NOT JUST THROW THEM A BOOK AND EXPECT THEM TO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
