I have been working at PetSmart (more than an year)

    Pros

It's a fun job to do. You learn a lot about animal needs. I learn something new everyday.

    Cons

Managers just don't want to help out. They think they are too high and mighty. They don't like giving breaks, they get irritated when you ask and you have to wait until someone else comes in because they don't want to be on the register for 15 minutes. Sometimes I'll need back up at the register and they'll clearly see and walk right past, even though I have paged for help and then they'll come back later and yell at you saying you need to call for help earlier. They also get mad if they call you and ask you to come in to work early or on your day off and you say no. There are only a few rare exception of managers that generally care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get off your high horse and actually help around the store.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I don't think there are anymore.

    Cons

I have worked for Petsmart for close to 4 years, Until recently this has been the best large scale corporation I have worked for as they didn't have a ridiculous soul-crushing corporate culture. However over the past six months or so quality has declined enormously. Petsmart has bowed to the pressures of a hedgefund and have cut hours drastically, they are now running all stores on a skeleton crew. They have basically decided to let the burden fall on its 50,000 or so employees so a couple of rich investors can become even richer. Petsmart has become in a big way the exact kind of company that is creating record gaps in the middle class. I frequently miss breaks because there is not enough staff to cover them, not really even legal but Petsmart doesn't care.Tiny raises if any. They are eliminating many full-time positions to avoid paying vacations and healthcare. I now feel like Petsmart is a sinking ship and I recommend abandoning it. Avoid at all costs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider the well being of your retail employees, they are the backbone of your business. Whatever growth you may experience will not be sustainable without quality employees to work in your stores. Do the right think and return to acting with integrity.

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

15 percent employee discount on purchases.

    Cons

Meager pay for stressful work, corporate regularly cuts hours without cutting responsibility, "blaming" culture, neglect of small pets, irregular schedule, vacation requests often denied, no rest periods, interrupted lunches, irritated and rude customers, so-so benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees a living wage, especially those you call "manager." A raise of 25 cents a year is insulting. Stop being penny-wise and pound foolish -- you are losing money because you have cut so many man hours. As a result, shelves go unstocked, products are misplaced, pets are sick, and morale sucks! You can preach CARE all you want -- SHOW IT! PetSmart is the least caring company I have ever worked for.

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

love having the chance to work with animals. good pay

    Cons

managers require you to work off the clock in order to do a certain number of dogs a day policies are not followed, company is more interested in how much money they can make then doing a good quality job many dogs were cut or injured due to too many dogs being pushed on groomers just to make quota. training was minimal at best and work environment was very unprofessional with groomers swearing at dogs and talking about customers and other employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

management needs to be trained to follow policies and treat employees professionally and respectfully.

I worked at PetSmart full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Bringing your pet to work

    Cons

Unless you drink the Kool-Aid you are not allowed to be yourself or have your own ideas. They glamorize all the buyers and don't give credit where credit is due. The Buyer Techs do ALL the work. The buyers make WAY too much money for what they do (and they are wondering why the are in a current crisis!) There are too many hands in the cookie jar and too many people are involved in simple decisions. The HR team is the WORST possible HR team in the history of any organization. There are no checks and balances and they are the worst offenders of "doing the right thing." I would never look to HR for any sort of guidance. They create postions for the most onscure jobs but can't pay the people who actually do a real job more money

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop making the management team appear as "celebrities."
