I have been working at PetSmart part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I love all the customers, and all the great products we sell. I love to educate customers on petcare and products.

    Cons

My manager personally dislikes me. She makes my work life a living hell. So much I get physically ill, but I stay bc I love my regular customers and my job. I do not like how our pets healthcare is not number one, but more about paperwork looking perfect for an audit.have seen over 40 animals die, most avoidable. My concerns get ignored, my boss accuses me of overreacting or not know what I am talking about, and boom , the animals die. My store manager is degrading, hurtful and uses shame tactics. Never in my life have I been made to feel this way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees like they are an asset to the company. Watch your demeanor. Praise them , not just criticize them. Work on team building. Avoid yelling, interrupting, eye rolling, demoralizing.

The experience was awesome, but the recent takeover and management changes have been brutal.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I enjoy the customer interaction and my coworkers. For the most part, it can be a fun job in this position, but I see the other managers stressing out about how much they have to do with no support and/or payroll to accomplish. I assume it has a lot to do with the new management structure that is still under wraps--they fired a store manager and have not replaced them for 3 months now.

    Cons

The company expect a lot form you. IT seems that most of the "old-timers" with 10+ years of experience talk about how good things used to be. This latest change, brought on by the private bid to purchase the company, seems to be hitting these managers the hardest. No one is truly "happy" in my location, glad to go to work and help people. They are more worried about following a directive to keep from getting fired. It makes a depressing work environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is understandable to make a profit, but when it comes at the sacrifice of the team member and your customer, eventually the sales and profitability will stop.

High intensity vision and demands with no tools to accomplish. The higher you go, the less support you receive.

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Customers are awesome
    Pets shop with pet parents
Great benefits: vacation, holiday pay, etc

    Cons

Salary=you sold your soul... you are expected to work well beyond reasonable hours.
Results are squeezed out of nothing. We have no recovery hours, our store being high volume runs off of similar payroll hours as stores that do an eighth of the business.
Thanks to upper management for including offered assistance on our 2015 scorecard without giving me back my payroll and customer service hours.
Music was taken away to cut money.
Work orders on critical repairs stay open and unworked on for MONTHS. We have so many "ghetto rigged" patches in customer view on things that are broken and the company won't spend the money to repair. Punish lower volume stores who aren't making money if you want to cut or quit paying for stupid stuff (changing mission statement and spending all that money to do that) when I can't even get basic operational items fixed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit getting in the store's way of building sales, taking care of pet parents, and being successful. You are trying to make things less complicated but still are succeeding very well.

It was a lot of fun but not meant for long term.

I worked at PetSmart part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people I worked with were great, I loved the clients and especially the pets. Very organized and detailed training. 2-3 times a year we get a bonus discount coupon.

    Cons

Managers are awful. After 3 years there I barely made more than when I started. Some days I felt like appearances were more important than how the animals were treated. No holiday bonus just some crap with Petsmart written on it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to advance more employees to higher roles instead of hiring new people above current employees. While I always respected her it was very hard to take my 19 year old senior associate seriously. Find a way to KEEP employees!

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great pay for upper level management. Fun environment if you like animals. Great opportunity for people interested in becoming groomers.

    Cons

Poor training, awful culture, no opportunities for advancement. Shifts do not allow for a work/life balance. A lot of 10-8 shifts scheduled.

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Cute dogs, coworkers typically bond well, tips can be good.

    Cons

Horrible pay, poor management, poor training, no opportunity to move up, cannot suggest tips to customers, no set schedules in salon

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your employees better, don't expect so much of the salon, cross train store employees in salon to help with receptionist duties, corporate needs to stop cutting hours.

I have been working at PetSmart

    Pros

Co-workers help eachother professionally and even personally

Some lower level managers are great

in general, customers are nice and willing to be helped.

    Cons

Management doesn't know how to deal with employees with disabilities. Their accommodations change based on their needs not yours.

Once you meet your training quota has been met, they use you in every area but training when you're not teaching a class then wonder why you have no time left for sales and paperwork.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at the big picture. Training classes not only help pets and their parents, but it brings them back at least 6x more. So on top of the training tools the trainer sells, the customer picks up food, toys, etc each time. Making you more money.

I have been working at PetSmart

    Pros

Charities and corporate vision are great! Corporate office is very supportive and is truly out there for the best interests of the pets.

    Cons

Management (ie. Store manager and Operations mngr) were not supportive . Very clicky environment. Pay is decent, benefits are great if you can afford them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support your team. Have your managers ready for the next step. Instead of facilitating unsavory behaviors. Support should be in action and not just verbal.
