I worked at Petco full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Above minimum wage work, hands on experience with a variety of animals, lots to learn, care greatly for the animals and their quality of life

    Cons

Very limited chances for raise and or climbing the latter, Higher management rules all yet doesn't have a clue about the stores or what goes on besides some numbers on a computer screen, each store may very highly in quality and knowledge base depending on the GM... On freight night expect to be worked like a dog no exceptions. If you can't you are very replaceable

    Advice to Management

Hire people with real experience with animals!!!! Not just management experience for example just because someone was a GM for a McDonald's (and doesn't own so much as a cat or goldfish) does not make them a qualified AM for a Petco!!!

I worked at Petco part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good hours, opportunity for higher pay through commission, allowed to accept tips, fellow employees are helpful, pretty positive work environment.

    Cons

Lack of communication between managers and employees, no bonuses or raises, questions and concerns are not always addressed or acknowledged.

    Advice to Management

Better communication as to what is expected of employees, better training for new hires, thanks for the opportunity to make commission instead of hourly especially during the peak business season.

I have been working at Petco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great products, great potential to remain better than it's competitors. Customer loyalty program that actually provides rewards. Associate discount which can be used by family (%20). Room for advancement and personal development among hardworking and reliable employees.

    Cons

Not enough time or coverage to complete all tasks / training of new employees.

    Advice to Management

Update technology, provide more hours to stores to allow for more adequate coverage, customer assistance and completion of tasks. Invest in keeping long term employees in the companion animal / aquatics department to satisfy customer needs and promote competency. Consider allotting more time before store hours for cleaning.

    I worked at Petco part-time

    Pros

    - Get to work with & interact with animals - PTO (if you average over 20 hours a week all year) - Casual dress code - Learn about animal nutrition

    Cons

    - A lot of managers don't follow policies & procedures - Not enough time for animal care & cleaning - Maximum raise per year for an associate is $.35 - Younger employees tend to slack off & get away with it

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge the workers who actually work hard & do their jobs.

I have been working at Petco full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Get to be around animals all day. Everyone that works there love animals and it shows. Get to help people with problems they are having with their pets. Training, minor health and food issues, boredom, etc. Fun events for the community like hamster ball derby. Company helps get donations to help animals in need. Help get dogs and cats adopted. Puppies. I love animals.

    Cons

Very metric focused with pressure to meet those metrics. Technology is very old and slow. Technology is starting to be upgraded but it is taking time. Inventory system is not very accurate. Not enough payroll to support helping all of the customers, completely proper animal care, and getting all maintenance tasks and extra projects done. Days can be intense if you are really busy in the store but still have a lot of tasks that have to be done. Run store with 3 people at times and everyone needs advice and help or to be checked out. Low pay for lower employees, hard to keep good people Inadequate training for all employees.

    Advice to Management

More payroll for stores so that they CAN focus and meet all goals that are in place. We want to provide good customer servce and great animal care but need more time and people to do these things and all the tasks that need to be done. Better inventory program so that we can keep things in stock for our customers.
