Decent company with some internal flaws

Store Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at Petco part-time for less than a year

ProsOpportunity to harness sales experience by recommending pet foods and products and learning about different animals. Decent starting pay. Not an overabundance of training material required.

ConsStore is often understaffed which leads to unneeded employees stress and customer dissatisfaction. This could be remedied (if only a little) by not including the salaried managers in the allotted weekly hours.
Employee hotline for complaints about the store or managers is essentially useless. Employees basically have no power which is a shame when you have a manager that even customers would rather not talk to (even in positive situations).

Advice to Senior ManagementRemove salaried managers from the allotted hours for the week: this would free up approximately 90 hours and would reliever the rampant under-staffing.
Make the employee hotline more effective. Employees need to be heard as they can offer valuable insight into what is or isn't working in the store.

There are worse places to work

Grooming Assistant (Current Employee)
Delafield, WI

I have been working at Petco full-time for more than a year

ProsGet paid to play with animals, paid training, benefits, paid time off

ConsTurnover rate really high, vindictive managers, unsupportive managers, hostile work environment, very little raises or opportunity for advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure your employees get along, pay is fair, and managers treat people fairly, provide raises no matter what position the employee is in in the company (even if commission vs hourly (salon workers, etc))

Friendly, but no balance

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Petco

ProsThe training is adequate for the job. However scheduling shortcomings made balancing work-life difficult. Co-workers made work enjoyable.

ConsOften understaffed, never offered raises that were given to co-workers for going through the same training for advanced certifications and new positions.

Really Depends on your GM

Inventory and Pricing Department Manager (Current Employee)
Jacksonville, FL

I have been working at Petco full-time for more than 8 years

ProsIt's a fun atmosphere with people who love their pets and can be a great place to work. You get to meet people with the same passions and plenty of cute puppies. Corporate has a good philosophy, but your work experience truly depends on your general manager. Their think adoption first and new belief to find happy healthy relationships for animals and their owners is nice.

ConsCorporate doesn't follow through with their philosophy to ensure that their individual store's are following them. They will not follow their own rules and regulations when it comes to customer complaints, so you have to be willing to do what it takes to make the customer happy. You will be asked to do tons of tasks while still maintaining a high customer satisfaction score with very little payroll to support both of these areas.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize that you are asking you employees to have a greater knowledge of products and pets than your competition and pay accordingly and as always more payroll would be helpful.

I worked at Petco part-time for more than a year

ProsYou get to work with and care for some amazing animals.

ConsEverything comes from corporate. No decisions are allowed to be made at the store level.

Advice to Senior ManagementStore managers should be competent and people driven.

The job is alright, the management is horrible.

Companion Animal Department Manager (Current Employee)
Lake Jackson, TX

I have been working at Petco full-time for less than a year

ProsWho doesn't like being able to work with animals every day?! The customers are usually really nice and receptive to conversation. The discount is very nice, especially if you have several pets. The company itself 'seems' to really care about the animals first and foremost. There is opportunity for fast promotions.

ConsManagement in several stores is horrible. I often find myself asking how such ignorant people were able to coerce themselves into the position they are in. There is no direction, training, or organization in my store. Most of the management staff is lazy, pawning their job off to whoever comes in next. Often times, the animals are stuck dealing with it, whether it be excessive feces in the habitat or a dry water bowl.

Advice to Senior ManagementDistrict managers: Do more in store visits. That seems to be the only time that my store runs the way it should. Make sure that your GM's are properly training their associates. My GM tells our DM that she is... she's not. I've been in the position I am in for 5 months now and I still feel lost. Listen to and respect your associates. I've never worked somewhere that had such a high turn over. TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN! Guide your employees in the right direction through proper training and coaching.

Pay for performance is not necessarily true.

General Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Petco full-time for more than 10 years

ProsCompany is generally ethical and strives to do the right thing for hourly employees and animals. HR department is fair and balanced when diffusing employee relation issues. Lots of little quality of life improvements like more relaxed uniforms and vendor partnered associate discount programs.

ConsThe compensation for salaried employees is subpar to an extreme degree, despite the financial performance of your store. Often arbitrary numbers unrelated to sales will be cited as reasons for keeping you at what amounts to a dead end salary (raises are around 3% annually unless you literally blow every metric they require of you out of the water by an extreme degree). Their closest competitor pays over $10grand more a year to store directors. Seeking a salary more in line with other retailers at a similar volume level is virtually impossible if you are already employed here, if hired from another retailer it's much easier. Despite being on record recently as focusing on reducing turnover, I firmly believe, at least in the region I work in, that they would rather lose GMs than adjust salaries, which is such a shame and so counterproductive considering the costs associated with training management.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake better care of the people that put in time and effort to take care of you. Apply the "doing the right thing" philosophy to management as well as hourly associates. Absent of that, stop insisting you have a pay for performance culture when it's clearly "pay as little as we can get away with".

A fun, heartwarming way of taking care of animals and ensuring they find their way into forever homes.

Sales Associate/Cashier (Former Employee)
Burlington, MA

I worked at Petco part-time for less than a year

ProsYou get to take care of animals every day. You learn about animal health and behavior. you work with people who enjoy and appreciate animals.

Conssome customers are very difficult/particular about their pets needs, and are often under the assumption that employees dont know what theyre talking about when it comes to product reccomendation.

Fine for School, Not for a Career

Customer Service Advisor (Former Employee)
Fontana, CA

I worked at Petco part-time for more than 5 years

ProsFlexible hours, great customers, the stores had some high quality products, ability to educate a wide customer base on animal care.

ConsMy manager wanted to hire me on full time, but was unable to get the hours from corporate (specifically the District Manager) to do so. Customer service was not considered as important. Animal care was all right, but the funding for getting the animals proper vet care just wasn't there.

Advice to Senior Management(More for upper management than for the store) Prioritize your customers when it comes to hiring and staffing. Bring in more small animal rescues and stop selling so many small animals, especially to people who bring them back dead more than once.
