I worked at Petco (less than a year)

    Pros

Co workers were great, learn a bit on different pets and their care. Scheduling was flexible and usually done on time. Quite a few different departments to go into(grooming, aquatics, dog training, etc.)

    Cons

the cash register system is very out of date, customers frequently complained about it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should have employee reviews more often, give the employees who are actually workin hard a raise to keep them there

I have been working at Petco full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There is, of course, the obvious you get to play with a variety of animals every day. No matter what else is happening, you can easily make your day ten times better with that benefit alone. It is fairly easy to move up the lower ranks for a dollar or two more per hour if you actually try at your job. If you are lucky enough to get a great GM, you will find support to help you with everyday tasks as well advancement within the company.

    Cons

There is a huge pay gap between store manager and everyone else. The staff you'll see on the floor is a perfect representation of what you'd expect to see with that kind of gap. You will have many more duties than match your pay grade and won't receive a lot of commendation for the feats you'll achieve with so little. I've also noticed a lot of staff won't stay in the same store if they expect any upward motion. They would rather bring in someone unfamiliar with your location than train and promote from within.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A fair wage would help to achieve the results upper management is looking to find. Starting partners at ten dollars an hour or less won't attract high quality talent. If you do manage to find someone willing to take that rate, they won't stay long as the pay raises to rank up aren't enough to justify the extra tasks received.

I have been working at Petco full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Pretty good time off, relatively relaxed atmosphere, plenty of nice people to work with. Customers usually pretty relaxed, and easygoing. There are advancement opportunities (to a point) for people who have great work ethic, and can get their stuff done. Great opportunity to help people understand how to help enrich the lives of their pets.

    Cons

The pay is low, the available hours for associates is low. The corporate structure seems top heavy, and occasionally incompetent leading to pressure on sales in order for stores to maintain profitability. Management bonuses seem difficult to obtain, even with outstanding sales numbers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The direction the company is heading is great, there needs to be quicker movement in that direction. When rolling out major changes to infrastructure, try to find the bugs and remove them in advance.
