I worked at Petco part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

My GM was a very nice person who tried to help everybody. Helping people choose pets to suit them. Getting to see people's pets grow over the months. And I got to watch the most heart wrenching adoption ever. A woman who was very much allergic to cats found (as she put it) her "soul mate" of cats. The cat had lost its sister to an act of brutality and was losing weight/luster/hair. They bonded instantly and within a month when she returned with her maine coon she was the most gorgeous cat I had ever seen.

    Cons

Training sort of went to a stand still with me, my GM was pushed out by circumstances that he was not able to discuss, new GM just stopped scheduling me and never had time to talk about it.

I have been working at Petco full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I love working with the animals. Deep cleaning and socializing is my favorite time of the day. I was able to establish a nice customer base and really bond with our guests.

    Cons

Where should I start? How about the fact I can't afford to work there. Despite increasing our promoter score, store margin, and increasing our current customer base I still cannot make enough to live adequately. Not a, "darn, I really wish I could buy that fancy purse!" it is a "How am I going to afford gas today?" I think it is quite appalling. I like the improved training, but I think they need to dive deeper into aquatic training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look a little harder into compensation, if you want to keep the good employees around.

    Going downhill

I have been working at Petco

    Pros

It's a fast paced environment, and there is always something to learn. I can't leave out getting to work with animals.

    Cons

The pay rate is hardly competitive, especially when it comes to the amount of work that is expected of you. The company is always changing things, and wasting a lot of money in the process. The communication between the different branches of corporate needs significant improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider the long-term when investing in new ideas, brands, practices, etc. The company dishes out a lot of money to get these things going, only to change it up shortly after. If the company wants to get more customers, they need to start with the people who are running the stores. Employee morale has its limits when the compensation and lack of control is not there.

I have been working at Petco full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Get paid to play with animals, paid training, benefits, paid time off

    Cons

Turnover rate really high, vindictive managers, unsupportive managers, hostile work environment, very little raises or opportunity for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure your employees get along, pay is fair, and managers treat people fairly, provide raises no matter what position the employee is in in the company (even if commission vs hourly (salon workers, etc))

    Current Employee - Store Associate

I have been working at Petco part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Opportunity to harness sales experience by recommending pet foods and products and learning about different animals. Decent starting pay. Not an overabundance of training material required.

    Cons

Store is often understaffed which leads to unneeded employees stress and customer dissatisfaction. This could be remedied (if only a little) by not including the salaried managers in the allotted weekly hours.
Employee hotline for complaints about the store or managers is essentially useless. Employees basically have no power which is a shame when you have a manager that even customers would rather not talk to (even in positive situations).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove salaried managers from the allotted hours for the week: this would free up approximately 90 hours and would reliever the rampant under-staffing.
Make the employee hotline more effective. Employees need to be heard as they can offer valuable insight into what is or isn't working in the store.

    I worked at Petco

    Pros

The training is adequate for the job. However scheduling shortcomings made balancing work-life difficult. Co-workers made work enjoyable.

    Cons

Often understaffed, never offered raises that were given to co-workers for going through the same training for advanced certifications and new positions.
