    Frustrating

    Assistant Manager (Former Employee)

ProsYou learn a lot about animals and can help change a pets life as long as the customers are willing to listen and believe in what you are teaching.

ConsUpper management (DM, VP) ask a lot out of one person and tend to not put any blame on themselves and are unwilling to be available to teach or train their store managers. All they do is dictate and express disappointment over conference calls and threaten your employment. They never give GM's ASM's any praise for all the work they do. A lot of the time I was working 60+ hours a week just to keep up with the demands of our DM.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop dictating and realize how hard your employees are working. When stores are growing in business they need more payroll to help customers and keep the store clean. Also when a store is 20+ years old and a building is even older, spend money to update it (i.e. the floors) otherwise customers will always have something to complain about even if they have had the best service of their lives.

Great company culture and mission statement, unfair management practices at Mira Loma DC

Operations Supervisor (Former Employee) Mira Loma, CA

ProsI was very impressed with the company culture and the programs initiated for the better of the company and the employees. Pets are not just a business but a personal passion to those who run the company, very impressive corporate culture.

ConsLocal senior management was not very open in their communication style. They appeared to be biased in some of their decision making which had detremental effect on the moral of the team. People were afraid to share ideas and opinions because appearance was that decisions were not always made based on performance but personal allegances. When a Operations Manager position became available, they did not post internally, eventhough, there were Operations Supervisors who were qualified to apply and be interviewed.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow your people the opportunity to be truly open in their opinions and engage them in brainstorming activities before implementing chage whenever possible.

One of the better Petcos but severely understaffed.

Aquatic Specialist (Current Employee) Carbondale, IL

ProsThe people there are very knowledgeable and care about the animals.
You get to spend time around fish and reptiles.
You meet other people who love fish and reptiles.

ConsThe hours are the worst I've ever had.
    Bad pay.
You meet people who have know idea how to care for animals and don't want to learn.
The store is severely understaffed, it's not uncommon for there to only be 3 people working at a time.
The position was advertised as full-time, but was really part-time. A bit sketchy if you ask me.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire enough people to take care of customers.

Job was fun, but management was disorganized.

Small Animals Specialist (Former Employee) Lawrenceville, GA

    ProsFun work with animals
    Pretty cool employees
    Room for advancement (maybe)

    ConsManagement completely disorganized
Company policies prevent specialists from taking care of animals as needed
Not enough training of all employees of animal knowledge

Advice to Senior ManagementLet people take care of their departments as they need to. Not all stores are the same and edits need to be made to the planograms to provide substitutions for bedding, temperatures, etc.

    Great benefits little pay

Customer Service Advisor (Current Employee) Los Angeles, CA

ProsYou get amazing health and vision. Along with 401k. Selected products are sometimes anywhere from 20%-50%.

ConsLittle pay! All managers are underpayed with the exception of General Managers. Cashiers start of propably at around $8.50 if you are lucky the most you will start with is $9.50. Raises use to be given fairly. Now the most you can get is a quarter.

Advice to Senior ManagementSTOP HIRING SO MANY NEW MANAGERS! EVER WONDER WHY SO MANY PEOPLE QUIT!

Learning new skills can be fun.

Sales Expert (Current Employee) Arnold, MO

ProsIf you really care for the customers they will give you compliments.Learning how and what to do when taking care of different animals will give you a perspective of what other pet owners may have to go through.

ConsNo one informs you enough of what not to do on the job that could result in a write up and such, you have to just work and figure it all out when it is to late.
