Very top heavy company. Plenty of clueless managers here. Org tree is constantly being shaken up. Constant dissonance between departments.

I have been working at Pharmacyclics full-time for more than a year

    Pros

at this time, I don't see any pros

    Cons

    more than enough cons.
office culture: political as expected from this industry, but more so than other places. same applies to favoritism. also, there is no whistleblower protection policy here.
work-life balance: absolutely no work-life balance. expect most of your time to work. you sacrifice your personal lives while employed at Pharmacyclics. your family interactions become more of daily phone calls and hi's and bye's
compensation: average salary. when you compute hours invested and the poor benefits, this place doesn't suit a lot of people. once they figure this out, and a better opportunity comes along, you see them leaving; thus the high turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

offer employee support and sympathy/empathy. we all want to help patients, but your style of management is killing us along the way

I worked at Pharmacyclics full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Life changing for patients with CLL as well as advancement in cancer therapy.

    Cons

There was no life balance policy. Company built out of control stress, fear and anxiety. Scientology is their training program.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The CEO should top paying people to write positive reviews about himself and the company. The dissatisfied reviews which are the truth far out weight the positive and you will not catch up.

I worked at Pharmacyclics full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Little to speak of. The couple of recent positive reviews clearly from management team constantly covering up mistakes with even worse decisions. Management did bail this place out years ago, but with deep pockets, not strategic thinking, and leadership.

This place was perfect for those losers 3 years ago who couldn't get another job and got lucky with stock options.

    Cons

This is an unethical company first and foremost. Managers are either given promotions, raises, praise when needed to work 'harder' or on the way down when their bonuses are due or disagree with the incompetent management. Rest of workforce are there for to work, work, work endlessly. Treated as subhuman.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This place is hopeless. Turnover is rampant. And they're struggling to find new talent since reputation is in the toilet. No one in their right mind would go there now.

I worked at Pharmacyclics full-time for less than a year

    Pros

great product but completely messed up the launch and focused so much time on an indication that the product did not have at launch

    Cons

Forced to train on "Genius Traits" which is very much like scientology of which the CEO is a member. Horrible culture. They fire people willy nilly. It is very clique-ish. If you didn't come over from Genentech you won't be part of the inner sanctum so you can kiss you chances of career development goodbye. I would avoid this company like the plague. Someone should buy them just to get the great product and get rid of all the management and in house team.

    Pros

    none comes to mind .

    Cons

fake, apple polisher, politics. the fake and apple polishers get the promotions. they push, push, push you to your limits until you break. very high turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

there is a huge gap between the executives and the rest. the executives get their way, do whatever they want, no one's watching them. while the rest of us employees are tired and pushed to hate their jobs. when they see undeserved people get promoted, they question why are they here at Pharmacyclics. you help the sick, but you don't help your own first.

I have been working at Pharmacyclics full-time

    Pros

None whatsoever. This company has a great drug but unfortunately can't realize it's potential due to poor management.

    Cons

Quite simply, this company is run by incompetent management that is in way above their heads, from the CEO & COO down to their VPs and beyond. Some functions are better than others (Legal, Research) but others are directionless, poorly run, understaffed, and highly incompetent (Commercial, Finance, HR). Instead, management will routinely use fear and intimidation tactics to get people to perform, and if you don't deliver what they want you will be immediately let go with trumped up charges before you even knew what hit you. They will manipulate your compensation as a tactic as well: sudden threats of stock option cancellations, withholding corporate bonus payouts you’ve officially earned, impromptu salary increases & decreases, and promoting/demoting employees at will with no checks & balances are all common tactics I’ve seen used on far too many good people here. I’ve seen VP-level folks demoted for no apparent reason, and I’ve also seen middle managers of questionable ability suddenly promoted to executive-level positions. Turnover runs rampant here and many departments have had at least 3 or more different department heads in the last year alone.

The company's day-to-day life is grueling and ruthless. Other reviewers here are spot on: sleep deprivation is the norm, almost a "status symbol," where people take pride in how many all-nighters they've done in a row, and with many folks who haven't seen their families in months. There is no work life balance here. It is all work, and if you can't keep up you'll be let go without hesitation. All this translates into a work environment where tempers are short, decisions are not well thought out, and mistakes are made.

Bottom line? Don’t be fooled into thinking you too can make millions if you’re willing to come here and trade your life, dignity, and self-respect for a couple of years. As they say, “there’s a sucker born every minute.”

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is no advice that I can offer that would change things, management is clearly only interested in making as much money as they can for themselves until the company either crumbles or is sold.

I have been working at Pharmacyclics full-time for more than a year

    Pros

None significant enough to make this company worth your time.

    Cons

Executives get very special treatment, including better offices, better food ordered for their meetings. Most people are not allowed to communicate with the executives, including senior managers and associate directors. They also are not held to timelines as all other employees are.

The executives also have their hands in the minutiae. Their approval is needed in order to allow a temporary employee to start. However, when it can take up to a month (or longer) to acquire a signature from any one of them, this makes it difficult to get new people in. Some of the executives insist on interviewing all candidates for their group, including temporary positions. At such a high level, they do not understand what is going on at the lower levels, and make budgets and other important decisions they probably shouldn't be wasting their time even thinking about.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a better community feeling, instead of creating an us versus them feeling for the common folk and the executives.

Allow managers to manage and get your hands out of the details that you aren't in the know about.

Don't create such demanding deadlines unless you are willing to open positions and open up the budget.

I have been working at Pharmacyclics full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Lead drug is sure to be a blockbuster
    - Stock price

    Cons

    - A revolving door of employees. There is a lot of turnover and many good employees seem to have been let go for questionable or arbitrary reasons. It's starting to effect our morale and everyone is worried that they could be next on the chopping block.
    - Zero work/life balance. You will be worked to death here, most people are working 12-15 hours a day including weekends. Lots of medical leave taken here.
    - Constant management changes. There have been so many management changes that it feels unstable and random. Very little is communicated and the rumor mill runs wild here.
    - Individual goals are not clear for many people and there is zero performance feedback. Instead, you will guess at what your boss expects and then find out after the fact whether it was really what they wanted.
    - Company culture is missing. They tried to roll out a core values program but it felt very amateurish. Mostly no one paid it any attention.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Attract and retain good people by creating a positive stable company culture, rather than just by throwing money around and promoting people willy-nilly.
