I worked at Pharmacyclics full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The interview process was wonderful and included meeting with management, directors, upper level management and support personnel. The working conditions and office space is very nice. There is excellent training and managerial support from the Director level down . The company provides breakfast every Friday.

    Cons

Actually the only negative issue is the traffic. The freeways are always crowded so to go 20 miles takes over two hours sometimes but this is Southern California and that would be the same in any company there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work and employee support. I liked having a mentor in another department so I could get a feel for what happens in other areas of the company. If there could be less meetings during the middle of the day when work is pressing it would be nice.

I have been working at Pharmacyclics full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary is OK, benefits adequate. Company values are commendable. Certain C level and VP level employees are great; others not so much. Location is accessible from Peninsula, South Bay and East Bay and the SSF location works well for the people in SF. A lot of growth opportunities. People are generally very good to work with. Communication lately has become poor, and it seems like the executive level is playing whispering down the lane. Stop sugar coating and keep it real.

    Cons

There are growing pains. Work life balance non-existant. Need a bus service like Genentech. Sales people have need of a serious attitude adjustment. Management needs to look at the person and not promote because a girl wears a short skirt or gives an insincere smile. HR should be more helpful and available. Need a cafeteria and serious gym.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen more to people who do the work and less to the politicians. Remove the micromanagement.

    Pros

There are mixed feelings with working at PCYC. My experience overall has been great. I knew coming in that it would be high pace and challenging. It has a start-up feel which means growing pains but also rewarding. For the people that want status quo or are not able to think outside the box and be flexible this is not the place for you. For people that can handle high stress, fast pace and strive in an environment of making things better and more efficient that comes then this would be a good place. I like my team and feel that we are collaborative.

    Cons

There are some areas that need to be addressed in the company such as management style and work/life balance and rewards. However I think that's recognized by senior management and there's been steps towards that. The 401k match could be improved. There's a 3 year vesting and that's not competitive in our industry. The match is also on the low side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. Investigate matters and take action when it's something that's been heard before. Be present and visible to the entire company so you can see what's going on instead of just being in the office or behind closed doors.

    Pros

First NDA approved, so people still have adrenalin for their jobs

    Cons

Too much work, salaries, benefit package not as good as other employers. Not enough information sharing. Promotions unbalanced. Too much turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Improve benefits. Hire more people.

I have been working at Pharmacyclics

    Pros

The company has a fantastic lead drug candidate that should be a blockbuster. The organization is still pretty small (a little over 100 people) so you can make a big impact, great for career development. Most people are very friendly and easy to work with. Generally a great place to work.

    Cons

Management seems to be very into status symbols and making sure staff knows its place. A lot of effort has gone into making executive offices nicer than others with special glass and chairs that others can't have. This creates a have vs. have-not mentality that is not good for morale. A real shame since this takes away from so many positives the company has.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember you are successful due to the hard work of all the people that work for you. When you lavish yourselves with lots of extras, it damages morale in ways that are very hard to repair. The more you can provide the same benefits to everyone, the better it will be.
