Great place to work!

Store Manager (Former Employee)
Hilton Head Island, SC

I worked at Pier 1 Imports full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat people, fun job, appeals to your creative side, and satisfying work.

ConsSometimes involves heavy lifting, being on ladders, and cleaning up broken glass.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf stores had an easier way to display mirrors and artwork there would be less strain on employees.

My experience had been great with a few exceptions

Sales Associate, Sales Leader, Interm Assistant Store Manager (Current Employee)
Cincinnati, OH

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports full-time for more than a year

ProsI have had the opportunity to work with customers and provide solutions to any problems they may have had with their product or their experience in the store. I have also had the opportunity to not only work with a wide variety of associates but I was also given the opportunity to manage those associates and had a good supervisor/associate relationship to where they could come to me with compliments or complaints of other staff/management

ConsMy personal experience has been good other than the fact that I feel like I have been used. I went from SA and after a few short months to SL then after 9 months back to SA since the initial SL was back from maternity leave. Then about 5 months later I was the Interm ASM and recently back down to SA. I would think that they would find a more permanent position for me because the management wants me to stay but the company will not open a spot since our store already has 3 SL. But all of them have limited availability since they have other obligations and I have full availability. It is very disappointing.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the store management more.

Pier 1 Imports is fast paced, cares about its employees, and promotes from within.

Sales Lead (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

ProsAlways something to do, good benefits, chances for promotion within the company.

ConsNo commission, but do have to meet sales goals and other Key Performance Indicators. Depending on location, management can focus more in shortcomings than good performance.

It's been a good learning experience, and Pier 1 tries to make it fun for its employees

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Branford, CT

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

ProsThere are a wide range of products that can suit any person's needs. There are a lot of different aspects to this job, and everybody will find something they like to do.

ConsDealing with very needy / rude customers tends to get very tedious. Sometimes is a thankless job

Advice to Senior ManagementTo trust employees more; don't micromanage us, sometimes we are actually good at a particular job and you don't need to treat us like we are not.

Great Atmosphere, friendly coworkers, overall good company

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Fenton, MO

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for less than a year

ProsFrom what I've seen Pier 1 hires genuine, friendly people so it's generally a pretty fun place to work. Most of the managers are pretty laid back and if you show you are reliable and hard working they will trust you and be understanding. Customer are usually easy to work with and polite. I like that there are no uniforms but there is a more classy dress code, at the same time this can lead to problems finding good shoes.

ConsStore Manager has issues with changing the schedule and not informing you(but of course this is not every manager), micromanaging can also be an issue. Corporate talking points can be annoying at times, you are pushed to get people to sign up for the Pier 1 credit card, this can be stressful at first but once you have gotten a few they generally don't bug you as much. Hours can be from 30 hrs one week to 10 hrs the next, this can be frustrating. Can't wear tennis shoes and it's hard to find supportive shoes that are also cute, you will be lifting heavy boxes while unloading truck (many over 35lbs) and putting furniture together, some people don't mind doing truck as it gives you a chance to chat with your co workers more.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire a few guys to help with the heavy lifting, communicate more with your employes, don't micromanage

It'e really not a bad place for a PT job

Sales Leader (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than 5 years

ProsFor the most part we have some great customers. If you get into the right store the job can be a lot of fun. As far as the associates go many if not most of them love pier 1 and most of them have great attitudes. Over the past few years I've worked with 3 DM's and all of them did a fantastic job.

ConsNo hours, low pay, high expectations from management. Some managers expect you to get 8 hours of work done and still keep your numbers up. (But hey, It is retail and that's par for the course)

Advice to Senior ManagementStop trying to micromanage, We all understand it's a PT job. Why can you guys hand out 20 hour work weeks? No one is going to give you 100% when you give them 4 to 10 hours a week.

Overall, good company. They strive for excellence...

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

ProsNot overly strict. Allowed co-workers to bond into a good team. Allowed employee input on completing work, but still maintained corporate standards.

ConsDepending on personnel, may find drama or politics that is not uncommon to certain workplaces. Number of hours not always stable.
