No two days are the same

Sales (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

ProsThe atmosphere is filled with a beautiful merchandise mix from around the world...it is very easy to work with and sell to the customers....the visual merchandising is uniform through out the company....most items are fairly priced....great clearance sales

ConsLow pay for sales team...the corporate visual guides are not realistic for merchandising the huge amounts of stock we have,it is difficult to achieve all of the corporate goals with pushing the credit card and meeting the days figures as well as keeping a clean store and processing huge amounts of stock. Too many heavy and cumbersome items to lift and carry with little to no help.

Advice to Senior ManagementAll stores should have an able bodied stock person to lift and get heavy items from tops of fixtures and someone to carry large and bulky items to customers cars.the person should work all the peak hours of operation...there could be a better way of boxing or wrapping gifts. Customers complain about that and lack of a shopping bag.

If you love hard work and entertaining!

Sales Leader (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

ProsI love working at Pier 1 Imports because most of the customers are so geniune. You do have to have patience with those who are not. Every item is unique, and entertaining is the name of the game.

ConsSome of the products could be in better condition. The stock rooms are over flowed with merchandise, and doesn't always seem safe. When wanting to move up in the food chain, you have to be willing to travel because positions are few.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe more incentives you give your associates, the harder they will work for the Pier 1 Card numbers.

Pier 1

Sales Leader (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe products are great, the associates that you work with are great, there are lots of fun things that you get to do (setting displays, matching products up with a customer's requests)

ConsThere are so many requirements for one shift and many projects are given with little time to complete them

Advice to Senior ManagementHarvest the talent that you do have, and recognize the work that someone has put into your company. Pay raises of $.10 are not enough to keep me on staff as a manager with you.

Really enjoyed this job during my college years.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)
Jacksonville, FL

I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

Pros-Creative and Upbeat Environment
-Fun products
-You're not forced to purchase any of their products.
-One thing I had a love/hate with about Pier 1 is that it is NOT commission based. I loved this because you don't feel pressure from commission sales to tap into that creative side with helping someone decorate their place.
-You develop lasting connections with customers. When Sales Associates establish a good relationship with a Customer at Pier1, you'll see them every week.

Cons-As mentioned earlier, it's not commission based. I had a situation where I set up a whole entire theme for someones dining area and my sales came out to over $2000+. I was paid $8 dollars for that hour of assistance. I've had this happen more than once.

-I wasn't too fond of the pressure to sell the Pier1 credit card either. It really was unfair when your hours are dependent on how many cards you get people to apply for versus selling a couple of thousand dollars worth of dining/bedroom/kitchen set ups. You can try to push hard for the cards, but if people say no, the answer is no. And sometimes you have no control over that.

Great place to work

Sales Associate (Former Employee)

I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

ProsGreat coworkers (I called it the Pier 1 family), flexible hours, easy-to-understand merchandise and big moves of merchandise were rare. Good benefits during holidays.

ConsCustomers can be flat-out rude. Schedule can be unclear, which made planning around work difficult. And that credit card... it's almost like they want you to harass customers to get it. Rarely do people get a raise, even those who've worked there for years.

Advice to Senior ManagementLay off the credit card, loosen up employee expectations.

Good temporary job

Pier I Associate (Current Employee)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for less than a year

ProsAnywhere between two and six hours per shift. Pay is ok for a second job or if you are married.

ConsDo not really get weekends off. Sometimes go in in the evening and work until midnight. Have to work some holidays.

Different than most retail jobs

Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Thornton, CO

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for less than a year

ProsGreat co-workers, good employee discount, fun environment, typically friendly customers, they really emphasize making connections with customers, training is very in depth and helpful in learning selling techniques, you learn almost every aspect of running a retail store including processing freight deliveries and transitioning the store, they work around your schedule, and they seem to really appreciate associates and the work we do

ConsCredit expectations are kind of crazy, surprisingly physical job, sometimes super slow with little to nothing to do

Advice to Senior ManagementLower your expectations with credit, or change your incentives.
