I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great co-workers. The people, including my manager, were wonderful. Everyone worked really hard despite the fact we all rolled our eyes about the fact we were even working there! Everyone knew they were over worked and under paid.

    Cons

I really liked my co-workers at Pier One Imports. Beyond that it has to be one of the worst jobs I've ever had. There are so many skus in the store that sales associates are constantly working as stock boys. I always felt pulled between getting the never ending boxes of merchandise unpacked, and relating to customers. Pier one provides a lot of training for a retail store, but there is no commission for those sales. I felt so much pressure to get people to sign up for their credit card, or to buy one more overly fragrant candle. But at the same time I was still getting my crappy $9.00/hour! One day as I was straightening up the pillow wall for the millionth time, a shelf fell on my nose. I was ok, but I realized I was working way too hard for such a low wage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees more. Offer commission.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with and they can make the day go by a lot faster. 25 % discount if you like shopping at Pier 1.

    Cons

hours vary week to week, depending on what they need. Sometimes its 30 hours a week other times 12 hours. Pay is terrible. The store manager would do our annual employee reviews without even discussing it with us, when we asked him about our reviews he said was working on it.

I honestly am not enjoying it here.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Occasionally you get nice people that you work with.

    Cons

I did not receive a choice of direct deposit or a paycard, they just gave me a paycard. The paycard that I believe is the standard is Metabank which is a terrible company in its self (money won't transfer to your bank correctly, awful customer service, etc.) I didn't get many hours a week, 5 hours tops, even if I am seasonal at a previous job I received 10-15 hours. And recently I never got paid for one of the days I worked there. Lastly when receiving shipments, many of the boxes are marked wrong or are indecipherable.

I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The compensation was good, $10. But not good enough to deal with how low the managers were.

    Cons

Applied online for Seasonal Sales Associate- called in for an interview. Waited almost 30 minutes for interview to find out it was a group interview. Following the interview they called me almost a week later asking if I wanted the position. I accepted came in for my first day of training, waited another 30 minutes for them to "be ready" I was considering leaving, I should have. After beginning training I learned it was more of a back stock position versus a Sales Associate position, and the sales associates would not even acknowledge me. I left and never returned.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be out right with what you are hiring for. Someone will want that job, without having to sucker someone with 4+ years of retail experience into doing it.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Cool product and discount there is not really too much else to say. But I have to put a 20 word minimum. Do not work here unless you want to do a lot of manual labor

    Cons

Low pay, lots of lifting, upper management thinks it's so easy and does not understand time lines to execute. Promos Change almost daily, or weekly hard to keep up. Always short staffed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay better! Hire a backroom manger. Stop telling your managers it's so easy if you just plan, you can plan all day long and it won't help because the workload out weighs the people avail to do it

I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Absolutely no "pros" for a part time Pier 1 employee.

    Cons

The leaders and shareholders of this organization are taking absolute advantage of part-time employees by only paying $8.00 an hour to do ridiculous amounts of work and push their credit card that essentially rapes people through the interest they'll have to pay to buy all the garbage this outfit sells. I lasted a week (maybe) but realized after my first day on the floor that this was nothing more than a hell hole of a place to work. This company should be ashamed of itself. Now I realize why people are screaming to increase minimum wage! I've never worked for such an awful company before.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward your part timers - those are the people who bust their butts to generate undeserved revenue for Pier 1!

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Customers are usually wonderful and appreciate efforts to assist them, or when sharing new ideas and items. Awesome fragrances and very pretty use of color and displays to provide inspiration. Great new furniture products being introduced.

    Cons

Disingenuous management. They will imply promotional opportunities exist as a "carrot" to avoid hiring necessary staff and to get more work out of an employee beyond their job description. Will also mess with scheduling (cutting hours to 10-15/wk for a month or more without notice or explanation) if they've been "working you too many hours" and so would have to pay for benefits. Supervisors also improperly force employees to clock out for breaks even though you are not allowed to leave if overlapping management coverage hasn't been scheduled. Supervisors threaten that to not clock out would result in being written up on an action plan. Regional managers have also had store level management falsify employee files in order to (retro actively) manufacture a "repeat" offense. In this area, there is also a well known "personal favorites" clique that, if you're not a part of, would forever keep you as an outsider, or worse, on the "To-Go" list, simply because the regional manager doesn't like your look or your personality doesn't click with hers (read, bend over and kiss her feet).

Also, the Part-Time employment model Pier 1 practices (to avoid paying benefits) which covers nearly ALL store employees, combined with extremely low Associate pay (~8-8.50/hr), fosters high turnover and inadequate employee coverage for basic tasks needed for the functioning of the store and stockroom. This always makes it impossible to meet sales figures, KPIs, etc. on a consistent basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate management should guarantee a safe environment to share insights from the store level, while circumventing the regional management teams, in order to learn what is and isn't going on properly at their stores - particularly for repeat underperformers.

I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The discount, friendly co-workers, great view of the ocean.

    Cons

Very limited hours if i was lucky I maybe got one four hour shift a week and that was it. Also they make their part time associates clean bathrooms and facilities. The managers never do any of that except treat you like you are less of a person for being a sales associate. They don't tell you when hiring new employees that you are responsible for cleaning to. Do not work here they seem to be going out of business and have a crappy business model as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you tell the new hire that they will be getting at least 20 hours a week stick to it please. Also you need to go over what exactly is in the employees responsibility when hiring a new employee. Also please treat the employees a lot better than just expendable labor. The managers are so damn lazy.

    Pros

I loved the product they sell and liked most of the people I worked with. Some of the managers want you to be yourself and help the customers make choices on what to buy.

    Cons

the store I was in went through 3 store managers in 2 years. when ever there was an issue you where unable to speak to the store manager about the issue with out feeling stupid. I worked my butt off just to be treated like a child. trying to get through to the Distric manager was an even bigger waste of time. I understand there focus but they still need to take care of there staff when an issue occurs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to those who ask for help i regulars to issues with management. morale should be positive.

Another greedy company (pier 1 Temecula, CA)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fellow associates are the best asset to the company. The set up of statements is fun to do too.

    Cons

Pay is barely above minimum wage for any associate. They expect lots of things done from certain people. The incentives for employees are crap (3 pier1 bucks for getting the most credit card, or selling UNICEF Christmas cards, sometimes nothing ). Associates are often ignored with new suggestions they bring up to management. Management always have the last word on anything regardless if they make sense or not, for example, no pier1 merchandise on the break room, even though employees love shopping there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the power to associates by letting them choose employees of the quarter. This is the 21st century, and management shouldn't have the last word on everything. They are people too and they make mistakes (horrid mistakes). The big problem right now is talent being driven away by management. Increase associates paycheck, or bonuses. Associates love pier1, and if they have the money to spend on the store, pier1 most likely will see an increase in sales. Promoting within the associates will be great as well. Older associates feel really unappreciated if sales leads are brought from outside the store, and having to deal with training them while their opinion is constantly disregarded.
