Great for Part Time, not for a Career.

    Pros

25% Employee Discount. Great customers who come back on a regular basis. Upbeat work environment, never a dull moment. Constantly changing merchandise. Varied work environment- stock, office, customer service, visual merchandising. Opportunity for stock purchase plan for all associates. Other benefits only for those working Full-Time. Some (very limited) benefits available for part-time associates. Good flexibility with scheduling if you have the right manager. Fun staff, good people to work with at the store level.

    Cons

Dirty, dusty, sometimes downright disgusting. Lack of opportunity for advancement-they will try to keep you in the store and region you are in, even if a great opportunity opens for you elsewhere. Long hours, cranky customers. Micromanagement. High focus on numbers. Leadership by threats: "If you don't reach "X" goal, you will get a written warning." Perks to working here have been taken away- from Holiday Dollars to Decreased discounts to no more "length of service" bonuses. Some rediculous merchandise that is impossible to sell.

    Advice to Management

Associates are your greatest resource. Try to keep that in mind when you continue to take away their perks and benefits. Associates are the front line to your customers, and the number one factor to keeping customers happy and coming back- thus reaching your goals.

    Pros

Pier 1 teams try to help each other in giving time off when you feel the need to for family or just because. For me, it's great for school and their flexibility of scheduling. However, to expect this upon hiring date is irrational because it takes time to gain certain privileges. Pier 1 does fairly well when it comes to recognizing others in their performance. A couple of years ago the company frequently named an "Employee of the Month," well.....monthly. I found that this incentive would boost morale quite easily, but recently they have switched to "Employee of the Quarter." Hmmm.

    Cons

There is a problem with giving more work hours. There are only two full time jobs at Pier 1. One being the store manager (salary) the other being the assistant manager (hourly). The other two positions sales leaders and sales associates are part time hourly. As with many other retail stores, the hours given to a store to schedule are based on sales. They do not give me more hours because I make a little more than most associates. Therefore, the store finds it cheaper to hire a couple people to work more hours at a lower wage than it is to give one associate that costs more, more hours. This is not fair.

    Advice to Management

I believe seniority should be given to those associates who have been there the longest. I am going on 5 years and I feel as if I am looking after myself. I have to get more hours by working at multiple stores. My advice would be to find a way to help those who help you the most. If you inspire your associates and treat them with respect, of course it will reflect in the company's numbers as well as your salary.

    Pros

Pier One Imports is a very nice, fast-paced yet laid back place to work at. There are always several associates and at minimum one manager on at a time, making all of the work very managable. The managers are very professional, and we always get done what is needed to be done, but they are all about having fun while working, and still being professional. Every day at Pier One is a day that we get a lot of work done, but more importantly we all have a ton of fun while doing it. I love working here because we always have so much fun!

    Cons

One downside to working at Pier One Imports would be that the store changes very often. Every couple of days we have to move displays, and moving the displays are very, very time consuming and diffucult. We will often get a small, hard to see picture of how the new display is supposed to look sent to us by corporate. Since these pictures are so hard to read, we often have to do it on our own, which is harder than it may seem because we have so many rules pertaining to color and size placements. If they managers were not so fun, this part of the job would be nearly unbearable, but they definitely add a lot of fun to it, and they make it seem easy to do.

    Advice to Management

If i had to give some advice, I would say to be more hands on. The store manager is usually out on the floor helping us, but the regional manager is rarely there providing direction, and anybody above him rarely communicates to the stores except for a few e-mails a month.

    Pros

Flexable schedule, you can let management know when you can work and they are pretty flexable in meeting your needes. The atmosphere is also fun and the customers who come in the store are usually friendly and appreciate being serviced.

    Cons

The pay could be alittle higher but that's the nature of the sales beast.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to coach entry level associates...sometimes they are looking for guidance need it.

    Pros

Nice product mix, with lots of fun, eye catching merchandise. Customers really seem to enjoy the Pier 1 experience which translates into a friendly customer base. I have yet to come across a crabby customer. The store manager is pleasant and professional. The sales staff is also pleasant. Reduced work hours on holidays and holiday pay is a bonus.

    Cons

Viability of the company is in question, therefore job security is questionable. Pay is on the low side, even for retail. Scheduled work hours are cut indiscriminately; unless one is a manager it appears that one cannot plan for a regular paycheck to pay for a mortgage, etc. Some customers find it intrusive to ask for a phone number AND email address prior to checking out. Career growth at this time seems unlikely although I hope for the best.

    Advice to Management

My only hope is that senior management is able to return Pier 1 to its former glory. This is a monumental challenge given today's difficult retail environment and (price point) pressure from Target, Wal-Mart, etc.

    Cons

I dont know what to say here.

    Advice to Management

get your stuff together. I swear some of the people working in corporate have no idea whats its like to come in at 5am to do a floor move in time for a sale that got moved up. think about the associates that work for you, put yourselves in their shoes.

    Pros

Alex Smith is doing a great job turning Pier 1 around and putting it back on the map. I think some of his leadership team needs some further development, but I want to see Pier 1 continue to succeed and get back to the amazing place it once was to work.

    Cons

Favoritism, some departments don't have a clear direction and just react vs. being proactive and looking strategically at what is needed.

    Advice to Management

Make sure the people at the Home Office support those in the Stores and DCs and not the other way around.

The enviornment withing the store is very inviting to customers. Great selection of merchandise for all kinds of budget.

    Cons

Work load is extremely heavy -especially for management. Way too many floor moves in short period of time. Confusing to customers to locate merchandise upon return visits.

    Advice to Management

Need to be well organized and budget your time. Hours given by company do not match work load expectation.
