I have been working at Pier 1 Imports full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Cool product and discount there is not really too much else to say. But I have to put a 20 word minimum. Do not work here unless you want to do a lot of manual labor

    Cons

Low pay, lots of lifting, upper management thinks it's so easy and does not understand time lines to execute. Promos Change almost daily, or weekly hard to keep up. Always short staffed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay better! Hire a backroom manger. Stop telling your managers it's so easy if you just plan, you can plan all day long and it won't help because the workload out weighs the people avail to do it

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Customers are usually wonderful and appreciate efforts to assist them, or when sharing new ideas and items. Awesome fragrances and very pretty use of color and displays to provide inspiration. Great new furniture products being introduced.

    Cons

Disingenuous management. They will imply promotional opportunities exist as a "carrot" to avoid hiring necessary staff and to get more work out of an employee beyond their job description. Will also mess with scheduling (cutting hours to 10-15/wk for a month or more without notice or explanation) if they've been "working you too many hours" and so would have to pay for benefits. Supervisors also improperly force employees to clock out for breaks even though you are not allowed to leave if overlapping management coverage hasn't been scheduled. Supervisors threaten that to not clock out would result in being written up on an action plan. Regional managers have also had store level management falsify employee files in order to (retro actively) manufacture a "repeat" offense. In this area, there is also a well known "personal favorites" clique that, if you're not a part of, would forever keep you as an outsider, or worse, on the "To-Go" list, simply because the regional manager doesn't like your look or your personality doesn't click with hers (read, bend over and kiss her feet).

Also, the Part-Time employment model Pier 1 practices (to avoid paying benefits) which covers nearly ALL store employees, combined with extremely low Associate pay (~8-8.50/hr), fosters high turnover and inadequate employee coverage for basic tasks needed for the functioning of the store and stockroom. This always makes it impossible to meet sales figures, KPIs, etc. on a consistent basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate management should guarantee a safe environment to share insights from the store level, while circumventing the regional management teams, in order to learn what is and isn't going on properly at their stores - particularly for repeat underperformers.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I loved the product they sell and liked most of the people I worked with. Some of the managers want you to be yourself and help the customers make choices on what to buy.

    Cons

the store I was in went through 3 store managers in 2 years. when ever there was an issue you where unable to speak to the store manager about the issue with out feeling stupid. I worked my butt off just to be treated like a child. trying to get through to the Distric manager was an even bigger waste of time. I understand there focus but they still need to take care of there staff when an issue occurs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to those who ask for help i regulars to issues with management. morale should be positive.

Another greedy company (pier 1 Temecula, CA)

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fellow associates are the best asset to the company. The set up of statements is fun to do too.

    Cons

Pay is barely above minimum wage for any associate. They expect lots of things done from certain people. The incentives for employees are crap (3 pier1 bucks for getting the most credit card, or selling UNICEF Christmas cards, sometimes nothing ). Associates are often ignored with new suggestions they bring up to management. Management always have the last word on anything regardless if they make sense or not, for example, no pier1 merchandise on the break room, even though employees love shopping there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the power to associates by letting them choose employees of the quarter. This is the 21st century, and management shouldn't have the last word on everything. They are people too and they make mistakes (horrid mistakes). The big problem right now is talent being driven away by management. Increase associates paycheck, or bonuses. Associates love pier1, and if they have the money to spend on the store, pier1 most likely will see an increase in sales. Promoting within the associates will be great as well. Older associates feel really unappreciated if sales leads are brought from outside the store, and having to deal with training them while their opinion is constantly disregarded.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Nice Atmosphere, Great Associates. Nice customers.

    Cons

    So many Cons

1).They do not offer reference/letter of reference to anyone who needs it. After working here for a while, you would think you should be entitled to some things.
    2) Too many staffs.. Over 10 associates at once in a little shop
    3) It gets boring. Nothing to do most days due to too much staff/ too little customers
    4) Management is Pushy. We are told to ask for so many things from customers, its unbelievable.
    5) They play favorites
and yes, you have to ask for permission to use the bathroom.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The employee discounts, short shifts a few days a week, and 99% of the customers are awesome! Perfect for any college kid wanting to make a few bucks while still having Summertime fun!

    Cons

Store Manager/Sale Leaders, and the over all treatment of the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't throw your new employees out on the floor with just two hours of computer training. We need more! And when we make a mistake, yes, correct us, but PLEASE stop doing it in front of the customers! It makes everyone around very uncomfortable and it's also very unprofessional. Do it behind closed doors and STOP talking to us like we are complete morons for not having the proper training. It's your fault, not ours.
You also need to be more courteous to our customers. THEY are the reason we have a job. THEY are the ones that help make our goals every hour, every day. I am tired of apologizing to them for your actions. The customer may not always be right, but it is your job (and ours) to resolve any issues they may have so that they want to return. I know it can't be an easy job to manage the store but it isn't easy for us to keep a smile on our face and to care if we're always being yelled at by you and basically being put down for being human and making mistakes.
I used to enjoy working here but no longer. After a little over a month, I have decided that I can no longer deal with the hostile environment and the deterioration of my self worth.

Misleading on hours you will receive. The credit card sales and conversion are put ahead of customer service.

    Pros

Good discount, coworkers are great. My hair always smells nice when I leave the store.

    Cons

Are forced to bash customers over and over during their shopping experience with the credit card. Mind you we leave out the fact that it's 27% interest rate. They do not provide proper cleaning supplies for the jobs you are required to do. Hours are horrible, can't live on 8-10 hours a week. Even though they hired you to work 16-20. Truck duties are only given to a few people. Stock room is a mess.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get organized, don't force your employee's to badger the customers 4 times during their shopping experience. Also allow us to hold the door open for them when they have a lot of bags. The conversion isn't worth lacking the service. If you provide proper cleaning supplies we would be satisfied to do our jobs right.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Meeting some wonderful co-workers. Seeing some beautiful hand made treasures from other parts of the world and the chance to be creative at times.

    Cons

Pay, Workload, Management, Working Environment. There is little I can add to the reviewer who advised all to run away. I actually thought I got up in the middle of the night and wrote that in my sleep. I am half way across the country and the conditions are the same. Chronically dangerous stockrooms and truly criminal physical work load expectations for some- they routinely hire people who cannot lift anything, making more work for those who can. Emotionally unstable managers are definitely the norm - upper management with no moral compass at all. You will be one of the lucky few if you leave this company unscathed - physically and emotionally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually try to treat your employees like you value them and reward people for hard work. Get rid of all the incompetent and emotionally unstable and abusive managers. I know that regional managers keep them on because they are easy to bully and manipulate. Basically, clean house and start all over again.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

You gain retail experience and are never bored.

    Cons

High turn over in associates. Scheduling employees outside of availability leaving less coverage and worn out associates and managers creating this endless cycle.

Expect to carry dining chairs and other heavy objects up a ladder and stack things dangerously around the store. You'll be performing other dangerous tasks like reaching while on the tip top of the ladder

you'll help people load and move they're giant furniture pieces with no help from your general manager(even if your a woman and he is a man)

Little to no real training. you will be thrown to the sharks on your first day. Yet if you do something wrong its still your fault, even if they never trained you on it

very advance and complex ordering processes leaving new associates clueless and customers frustrated when we cannot find their merchandise the spent hundreds of dollars on.

little to no communication between gm and management team

    unrealistic expectations with little coverage

    Micromanaging.

Customer service is not a priority, tasking and store appearances is, your numbers and conversion are going down because of this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

spend more time on your training. If you have an employee who is confident in what they are doing you wont have so many customer issues and employees who just walk out.
