I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

25% discount on all merchandise for all associates, including sale and clearance
You get to see the results of the surveys customers take about you (can also be a con!)

    Cons

HUGE amount of pressure to open credit cards and obtain email sign-ups; hours given are based on these results

You get some of the snootiest, rude, and demanding customers

Flex shifts (basically you're on call for a designated shift; you need to call 2 hours before the start time and see if they need you or not) You are rarely called in for them, but you must still plan your day around them

Large amount of stockroom/heavy lifting that is not reflected in your paycheck

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of flex shifts; we are part-time sales associates making minimum wage or a little more, not surgeons. Sales Associates and Sales Leaders have a lot of responsibilities; pay them in proportion to them.

I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working for this type of store was great. I enjoyed the various merchandise selection and how unique things were. The merchandise changed so often. If enjoy working with customers, then this is the place for you - very customer service centered - almost a bit overboard.

    Cons

This is not the place to work for if you're a hard worker. People were completely taken advantage of during the three years with this company. All of the tasks, merchandising, setting sales, etc was put heavily on certain associates shoulders and was only a Sales Associate. The few of us did more work than the majority of the Sales Leads and Management.
Knew everything about that store and was never given the opportunity to move up with the company. Was always told it would happen, and how deserving of it but over three years keeping that store together, felt it was time to leave.
Management hires and puts in those people they "want" or "know" versus who makes the best fit.
There were also no "full time" associates. Even Sales Leaders were part-time so didn't have to pay health benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Needs to think and consider hiring those who are "good"fits for the company - those who work hard, deserve, and want higher positions.

I worked at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The pay..made more than min. wage
Other staff seemed nice, but only scheduled with a half hour over-lap so really didn't know them well enough.

    Cons

I wasn't told prior to being hired hours are based on how many credit card sign ups you get. Really? Don't give me hours based on customer service. so sad.

The assistant mgr at the store I worked was way too young and immature to run a store. (The mgr left taking another position at a different company)

Sales leads/mgmt spend too much time chatting in the back leaving one sales person on the floor. Had to call for help each time it got busy.

Hired for full time work-was scheduled no more than 10 hrs a week. (That's part, part time)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire assistant mgrs with experience and maturity.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The coworkers were fantastic. There seemed to be a whimsical feel about the store. A really nice environment to work in. The new product that always came in was a plus.

    Cons

The pay was nowhere near "competitive". There is a lot of work that goes in to being a successful store. Incentives? Nope. From managers down to the Sales Associate, expect your pay to hover around where you started. I worked there for several years to get through college and typically received an eight cent raise per year.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My management was great on the store level. I couldn't applaud them more. They are the only reason I stayed for as long as I did. As for the corporation, the goals are unrealistic.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

My store had very friendly associates that were likable and made it feel like a family. Being a straight, college age guy, there is very little temptation to spend my paycheck here. After 3 years of working here, I've begun to feel confident in my product knowledge coming from knowing nothing about interior decor.

    Cons

Constant demand for opening credit cards, getting emails, and surveys from customers. Working on hand and knee for customers that treat you like dirt for barely above minimum wage. Many customers I spoke with thought we earned at least $11 starting wage plus commission. Very few hours available and a full 8 hour shift maybe once every other month. End of year performance reviews are from 1-5 and unless you meet your high quota every week, you'll get either a 2 or 3.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about the associates. The customer is right most of the time but not always. Change the store and website systems from Microsoft Silverlight to Flash. Why use a new program that still has many bugs and performance issues instead of a tried and true 20+ year old program that is used by almost everyone.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Nice co-workers, good employee discount, pleasant work environment. Great place if you don't need the money.

    Cons

Very low pay, 25 cent yearly raise, too few hours, push, push, push that credit card like your life depends on it. Unrealistic sales goals. Phony "Pier 1 family" sales talks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to sales people once in a while. Too much emphasis on opening credit card in this economy. More hours would help you retain people. Stop regional managers from brow beating store managers.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

nice people to work with, generous discount, wearing jeans was nice

    Cons

typical retail woes, awful inconsistent pay, greedy shareholders, extremely high expectations for not much more than minimum wage. The store that I worked at didn't even have a/c and we had to wear long pants even when it was 90 degrees inside our store. When our manager reported it to property management, they claimed it was too expensive to fix (hence the greed comment) They offer substandard health insurance, but make certain that no one gets enough hours to qualify for it. All in all, a lousy company that makes millions selling cardboard furniture and fancy pillows from sweatshops.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

consider offering a real sales bonus or higher hourly pay. Or if you expect your employees to perform as if they are in a commission environment, pay them 60 grand a year like all the other furniture stores.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Nice working environment, good people, casual dress code.

    Cons

Not enough hours, pathetic pay for the area (one of the most expensive areas to live in the U.S.), Management style and philosophy could be "more up to date" with the current culture. Sometimes understaffed which causes customers longer waiting times, not enough appreciation shown for how hard the associates work, no incentives given to motivate employees to move up, not that there are many opportunities.
