I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Most of the people I work with are nice.

    Cons

I applied for a managers position. Instead of hiring me they hired someone who was stealing from them.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

My store had very friendly associates that were likable and made it feel like a family. Being a straight, college age guy, there is very little temptation to spend my paycheck here. After 3 years of working here, I've begun to feel confident in my product knowledge coming from knowing nothing about interior decor.

    Cons

Constant demand for opening credit cards, getting emails, and surveys from customers. Working on hand and knee for customers that treat you like dirt for barely above minimum wage. Many customers I spoke with thought we earned at least $11 starting wage plus commission. Very few hours available and a full 8 hour shift maybe once every other month. End of year performance reviews are from 1-5 and unless you meet your high quota every week, you'll get either a 2 or 3.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about the associates. The customer is right most of the time but not always. Change the store and website systems from Microsoft Silverlight to Flash. Why use a new program that still has many bugs and performance issues instead of a tried and true 20+ year old program that is used by almost everyone.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Nice co-workers, good employee discount, pleasant work environment. Great place if you don't need the money.

    Cons

Very low pay, 25 cent yearly raise, too few hours, push, push, push that credit card like your life depends on it. Unrealistic sales goals. Phony "Pier 1 family" sales talks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to sales people once in a while. Too much emphasis on opening credit card in this economy. More hours would help you retain people. Stop regional managers from brow beating store managers.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Nice working environment, good people, casual dress code.

    Cons

Not enough hours, pathetic pay for the area (one of the most expensive areas to live in the U.S.), Management style and philosophy could be "more up to date" with the current culture. Sometimes understaffed which causes customers longer waiting times, not enough appreciation shown for how hard the associates work, no incentives given to motivate employees to move up, not that there are many opportunities.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Short shifts and 25% discount

    Cons

    - You typically only get 2-3 shifts a week, and at least two "on call" shifts. There is no consistency in which days you're working and what time.
    - The pay is not much higher than minimum wage, and any raise is a couple pennies (after a year of working there). This on top of 8-12 a week is not enough to pay the bills.
    - I was told they were super flexible should I need to change my hours. I got a second job (which pays better and gives more hours), and my manager was very disgruntled when I told her I would be changing my availability.
    - I have worked here for quite some time and they have only ever zoned me to register. Had I known this was a cashier position, I would not have accepted it.
    - They claim it's not a competitive environment that every employee is equal and we are a team with one goal, not individual goals. Yet, they are constantly competing with other stores and each other to get Pier 1 cards.
    - Pretty much, your job depends on the Pier 1 card. The way management has told me that I need to get a card has made me feel as though I'd be fired by the end of the day if I didn't sign someone up for one.
    - Bottom line, they care way too much about the Pier 1 card.
    - The on call shifts are extremely aggravating. Some are closing shifts, so you sit around all day until you can call two hours before the scheduled time. It definitely gets in the way of your personal life.
    - The staff are super cliquey. I have never felt welcomed by the team I work with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the on call shifts. Relax on the Pier 1 card. Understand that some people need more than 8 hours a week, so you do need to be open to the idea of your employees having second careers.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than a year

    Pros

nice people to work with, generous discount, wearing jeans was nice

    Cons

typical retail woes, awful inconsistent pay, greedy shareholders, extremely high expectations for not much more than minimum wage. The store that I worked at didn't even have a/c and we had to wear long pants even when it was 90 degrees inside our store. When our manager reported it to property management, they claimed it was too expensive to fix (hence the greed comment) They offer substandard health insurance, but make certain that no one gets enough hours to qualify for it. All in all, a lousy company that makes millions selling cardboard furniture and fancy pillows from sweatshops.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

consider offering a real sales bonus or higher hourly pay. Or if you expect your employees to perform as if they are in a commission environment, pay them 60 grand a year like all the other furniture stores.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Awesome discount, pretty great customers, nice co-workers (sales associates), and cute merchandise.

    Cons

Too pushy with a stupid credit card for customers, management picks on me sometimes for not knowing certain things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop with the pushiness of a credit card no one really wants. Also, stop with the on call shifts. Makes it hard to plan anything out for the week. Also, make sure new schedules are always two weeks in advance so plans can be made. I do have a life outside of work.

I worked at Pier 1 Imports full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If you like people it's a perfect job for you. Customer service is critical, there are anonymous customer surveys done on your store and you have to follow the six selling standards. Interesting furniture and shelf goods that come in all the time. Regional doesn't get involved in helping you in your store, you get a two week training in another manager's store then you are on your own. You get a 25% employee discount.

    Cons

Payroll to run the entire store is way too low and it makes it tough to get all your work done and sell and run the staff. Lots of heavy lifting if not with display changes its with transitions and taking furniture out to the customers and lifting it on their trucks, sofas, dressers, nightstands...etc. Usually women come by themselves to pick up furniture orders and it's up to the manager on duty to do the heavy lifting. The company is very demanding with their expectations so you better produce and hit your targets or they find a way to replace you quickly. Most merchandise is from China and kinda cheap but the prices are high and you better sell it and add on. We had to bug customers for their emails all the time and forced to get customers to open the company credit card with high interest. Managers were held accountable if not hitting those goals. There is a lot involved in this job for below average pay and raises are between ten cents and fifty cents annually if you made your annual targets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more realistic and get your hands dirty with the managers sometimes, it would boost morale.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Atmosphere, music helps, variety of mdse always changing

    Cons

Schedules change with no notice. Part timers are paid 8$an hr, they are expected, to mop floors, clean the bathrooms, lift extremely heavy furniture with very little help, attend meetings on Sunday mornings at 7am, for two hrs, go home then report back later to work a shift. They have "flex time" which is a on call schedule , you have to wait till 1 hr before you are scheduled, and call in to see if you are asked to come in or not. That ties up your entire day, wondering if you are working or not. When avavilibility is given for 8-10 hrs a wk, they schedule you 22 hrs !
The mgmt at my location is horrible, I would never recommend this job, and in fact the majority of pt people are working ft jobs, this is not a good pt job for a second job

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show some respect for your workers. The dissension amongst everyone is horrible. Figure out how to schedule properly, be fair to all your employees . Get a DM that isn't a drill SSgt, as this is where it all stems from. Train your people, we are the ones that build your business.
