    Pros

See title. Plus decent employee perks: 25% discount, bonuses for mgmt monthly.

    Cons

Discouraging management. Low on praise, high on "try harder" attitude. I get the consistent striving for better, but along the way acknowledge a job well done. It goes a long way. Also, I've been discouraged from considering a regional move and promotion by my District Mgr. He should only be training and encouraging me to move up and move on. Disappointing.

    Advice to Management

Remember to give an 'atta boy' more often. Don't be stingy with talent. If they're good, they won't be yours long. They'll either leave the company or get promoted. It may seem thankless, but it's kind of like parenting. You do a ton of work to mold someone into a damn fine citizen and you release them into the wild knowing you did well. Training and promoting is part of the job of every level of management.

    Pros

The upbeat tunes keep everyone motivated and happy. I enjoy helping people create their dream room from the bottom up, from furniture to rugs to lighting. Pier 1 has a great team player atmosphere that customers truly appreciate. And I love going home smelling like candles. Also, the sale and clearance items can't be beat, and with our 25% discount it's nearly free!

    Cons

Not enough hours given to work. Unless you're full-time management you'll need another part or full-time job to make ends meet.

    Advice to Management

I'd like to see more options in the way of comfortable footwear, and perhaps casual Fri (or Sat) when associates may wear sneakers or another color shirt. Just my opinion...

    Pros

Great staff (sales associates), very nice employee discount. Good training and support when first starting with the company. Overall good products. It's fun to help the customers.

    Cons

Trying to be a major furniture store results in overpriced, mediocre quality merchandise. Pier 1 is also trying to be all things to all people and not succeeding. Company spent a chunk of $$ on upgrading to e-commerce and underestimated the cost. Consequently the store staff is under tremendous pressure to perform in an almost stagnant market. A lot of emphasis is placed on getting applications for the Pier 1 Rewards card in a time when consumers are getting smarter and not applying for store credit cards (hits on credit report, very high interest rates). Pressure to perform makes for a very stressful work environment.

    Advice to Management

Stop making the sales associates pay for the mistakes made by management with the e-commerce site, They had no say in its establishment, and now that it's costing more than estimated, the sales associates are under the gun to produce more. Why not make all executives VP and higher take a 10% pay cut and no bonuses until sales go up? Get all your Assistant Managers and Store Managers some much needed management and LEADERSHIP training. The prevailing attitude in management at the store I work at is that being a leader means being bossy and showing no respect to the associates.

    Pros

They listen to stores and make changes to try and make things better

    Cons

They don't seem to know what they're doing. They have a "throw it against the wall and see what sticks? mentality to their marketing. EVERYTHING is determined by how many instant credits your store opens and what your conversion is every hour of every day. Micromanaged to death.

    Advice to Management

Make a decision and stick with it.

    Pros

not too many. the funiture is cheap. they pay the worker's poorly, and you will always be doing something outside of your job description. Only work here if you are between the age of 18-22 or you are older and just need something to do to occupy your time. oh wait i was supposed to talk about pros....

    Cons

The pay, the lack of growth opportunities, basically everything. Managers get drunk / high during overnight shifts. Unprofessional retail environment overall.

    Advice to Management

Pay your workers an appropriate salary comparable to the work that they do. or at least keep hours more consistent. this job is a joke. i can barely afford a Metro Card

    Pros

Great atmosphere and team to work with. Fun working with customers and building the sale.

    Cons

Not many positions open for full-time sales associate. Not great pay to live on.

    Advice to Management

Keep training the associates. Make sure the management follows the same guidelines and policies of conduct and uniform as the associates have too.

    Pros

The other sales associates are pretty nice. They have helped me with my mistakes when I messed up- especially on the confusing registers.

    Cons

8.50 an hour. No breaks. No benefits. 4-5 hour shifts. Always on your feet. Managers constantly breathing down your neck. Forcing you to sell the store credit card. You have to constantly pressure customers into buying things. If you don't, the manager will scold you. Customers are rude. Plain and simple. You hardly get a single Thank you. Unorganized. I never have a set task. I just wander around all day. All the managers care about is selling. They will make you feel extremely uncomfortable. They do not care about you as a person. The registers are way too complicated. There's a million buttons & different payment options. And you always have to ask customers for their email at check out- so you can send them more junk to their inbox. ( which they hate giving to you) Too much pressure working here. Not enough pay. No advancement what so ever.

    Advice to Management

Stop the micro managing. Raise our pay. Give employees actual tasks. give employees more praise. Stop trying so hard to sell the rewards credit card... it annoys the employees and the customers.

    Pros

Fun environment where the people truly care about you. 25 percent discount really comes in handy.

    Cons

Barely above minimum wage salary. Lots of people come and go because they find the job boring or just are not motivated enough by the same tasks over and over.

    Advice to Management

Offer better compensation and benefits to part time workers. Increase salary for those who have worked more than one year.

    Pros

Great benefits. Great work life balance. Low stress. Lots of opportunity to make a difference and be involved in big projects.

    Cons

Systems that do not communicate well makes it difficult to get clear metrics. However, that is an issue at most companies. Fluctuating demand causes long term planning to be difficult.
