I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

P1 is a low key, part time job that often feels like you are just talking to friends who happen to be customers.

    Cons

There are always a list of things that we are to include in our conversations with customers: first and foremost, the Pier 1 rewards credit card; during the holidays UNICEF cards; add-on sales and oh yeah, get their phone numbers, email addresses and full names at the register. It's alot to ask and the customers are reluctant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward the Managers and Sales Leaders. They seem a bit beaten down. It is retail, after all.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports

    Pros

Employee discount and some nice associates.

    Cons

Management is extremely under qualified for their positions. Management can often be seen gossiping about associates on the sales floor. Your job gets threatened every time you dont convince someone to open up a credit card. In the short time I worked there about 4 people quit and I know of two more who put in their 2 weeks. The company and management do not care about your wellbeing and job satisfaction. They also fail to recognize high turnover rates. If you do manage to trick someone into opening a credit card, management won't commend you, instead, they'll list off other things you should've done that day on top of it (like getting e mails from customers). Just please, do not work here. If you like this store, stay a customer, this job will destroy your happiness and self confidence.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Authoritarian ways of management are out the door and people dont respond well to it. Could use an update.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports

    Pros

It is now an evolving company that is interested in developing its employees.

    Cons

Pay, "Flex shifts," intentionally rude customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

New incentives to pitch the Pier 1 card with would make it more interesting for customers who have been waiting to apply.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    1. 25% off associate discount on regular, sale, and clearance items
    2. Got payed higher than minimum wage.

    Cons

    1. Long 4-5 hour shifts without a break
    2. Flex days where you have to call in 2 hours before your shift to see if they need you. It's like being on call without getting paid.
    3. If the store is not busing you get sent home early; thus, cutting into your hours-and pay.
    4. They are very annal about how the store is set up. For example, tearing down and reorganizing the entire pillow wall (5 hour job) to make it look exactly like the picture in the planner. (Why bother when it's just going to get torn part and changed.) Only certain pillows and throws can site on the furniture, etc.
    5. Constant pressure to push the Pier 1 Rewards Credit Card. They are always nagging about it and you are expected to sell one per shift.
    6. Forced to get customers phone numbers, emails, and names at the register.
    7. Can only wear solid black or white tops.
    8. Be prepared for early morning 6 a.m. shifts and late night 12-1 am transition shifts. (These actually are better than working the sales floor because you actually have stuff to do.
    9. When the store is not busy and you aren't given a project you pointlessly walk around and straighten the store. It's extremely boring and the hours crawl by.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Stop pressuring associates to sell the P1RCC
    2. Give associates a 5-10 minutes break so that they can go to the back and grab a snack or some water. (Especially during a 5 hour shift.)
    3. Don't force associates to ask for email and phone numbers.
    4. Don't cut hours.
    5. Get ride of flex days or we should get paid because it ruins the whole day when you have to sit around and wonder if you need to go in.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    1) Working at pier 1 gives you the opportunity to expand your creativity and play around with colors, shapes and sizes in merchandise. 2) Helping customers decorate their homes not only is fun but also develops a relationship with them. 3) Associates also receive a 25% discount which is nice.

    Cons

    1) Management looks down on associates for not reaching instant credit goals. 2)Associates are trained to push credit cards on customers making the customers very frustrated and not wanting to shop in the store. 3)Associates also cannot request days off during any holidays. 4) Most of the work I do at pier 1 is transitions and placing in the store, and so many hours with no break or 30 minutes break can really run you down. 5) Associates also are not appreciated for work they do, and are paid way to little to be climbing ladders and getting up in high lofts to bring large merchandise down. 6) managers talk down to associates if their hourly goals and conversion rates are not met blaming the associates. 7) Managers can schedule flex shifts so the associates have to wait all day and call in 2 hours before the shift to make sure they're working that day or not. 8) Most of the merchandise is moved almost every day making it hard for the customer to remember where everything is and also is tiring for the associates who know that the merchandise will be moved around again in two days. 9) Last but no least, pay is so low that pier 1 can literally only be a 2nd job, a "just for fun" job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Treat employees with more respect and care. 2) Give employees who have been there for hours a little break as talking to customers and moving merchandise can get very tiring. 3) Stop pushing the associates to sell so many ICC's. 4) Treat customers with more respect if they open a card and purchase 1,000 dollars worth of merchandise.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports

    Pros

You leave the store covered in glitter! Everything smells wonderful, and you are surrounded by beautiful merchandise. The employee discount is nice. I enjoyed genuinely helping customers meet their needs, and I often had fun working as a store associate during the holidays. Pier 1 hires great people, and my wonderful coworkers helped keep me sane during periods of stress. I learned a lot about merchandising, pricing, and the way that the retail industry operates during this job.

    Cons

Some members of management put a ridiculous amount of pressure on employees to open credit card accounts. My store had a points wall which served to shame associates that had not managed to coerce customers into opening credit card accounts. I often felt like managers were talking down to me during "sales coaching" sessions, where I would be blamed for not meeting hourly sales goals. We associates are encouraged to "work" every customer, pushing additional merchandise, the credit card, and add-on items onto them. We had to try to get customer information (email, phone number, etc), as well as try to implement suggestive selling strategies all during the POS. The management is obsessed with hourly metrics, to the point that it negatively impacts the performance of the team. On top of this, bizarre scheduling practices (including the inexplicable "flex" shifts) and low pay scale make this a hard part-time job to maintain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees with respect, and trust in their ability to represent your product and brand. Pushing credit card services on every customer makes the company seem overly aggressive, and it diminishes the overall experience for customers and employees. Pier 1 hires great associates with great people skills and design sense, but the company loses associates frequently because of the low pay and lack of managerial support. Keep the focus on the product and lose the gimmicks.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports

    Pros

The atmosphere at Pier One is very lively and fun and for the most part, the employees are alot of fun to work with as well. The merchandise is great and you get a 25 percent employee discount which is nice.

    Cons

Low starting pay. I received "Sales Associate of the Quarter" twice in a one year period and am also a leader in credit card openings, yet only received a 30 cent raise in a two year period. The work is very strenuous, lots of lifting and getting up and down on ladders. You are not rewarded for your hard work. Very discouraging.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The upper management is so concerned with selling Unicef and helping poor kids in other countries, but what about your own employees? A good employee who is loyal and hard working should be given AT LEAST a one dollar raise per year. I have seen good employees come and go due to the low pay. An extra dollar an hour a day for a five hour shift is only five bucks, the cost of a Christmas ornament! Your hard working employees should be worth at least that.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Learning to merchandise and interacting with customers who are excited about interior decorating.

    Cons

Flex-time scheduling is really ridiculous. We are part-time employees who barely earn over minimum wage - we are not Emergency Room physicians. The Pier 1 "Rewards" card obsession which forces us to "work" every customer and the customer ends up getting very annoyed.
