Overall - Great Place to Work

Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
Minneapolis, MN

I worked at Piper Jaffray

ProsSalary, bonuses and benefits are the biggest plus at this location...though you must work hard to earn them. Work/life balance is good too. Overall, nice people to work with.

ConsWorkload is overwhelming. Large producers are able to treat others with little or no respect and behave poorly as long as they produce.

Advice to Senior ManagementCheck in with support staff from time to time.

Good place to start your career. More work hard, less play hard.

ProsExperience. Piper gives analysts lots of responsibility (ie additional work) which gives you a lot to speak to when it comes to interviewing elsewhere. This makes it sound not good, but really, analyst programs are built around analysts moving on to VC/PE so it does prepare you well for those opportunities.

ConsLimited respect for your time, impossible to have a personal life, not necessarily as well regarded as bulge banks, but competes well in the middle-market.

Advice to Senior ManagementSenior management doesn't do much to supervise the IB division. There's a disconnect from Senior mgt - senior bankers - junior resources. You should get more involved with the senior bankers to ensure that they're fostering the partnership environment you talk about. That message never flows down to junior resources in action, and I can assure you the junior resources have no interest in moving up the ladder in a firm like that. You'll constantly be looking outside for senior bankers which is why it's hard for you to actually develop "partners" that you want.
