I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great entry level organization for medical training. People can start as volunteer and gain proper training for entry into medical field.

    Cons

Unfortunately, power hungry women - very big disappointment. Management staff does not treat fellow employees very well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Treat good employees better!

I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time

    Pros

Good mission but its overshadowed by internal politics and people.

    Cons

Some of the worst people I have ever worked with in my entire life work here. Some people are down right rotten through and through. Some very senior managers at the HQ's are vial human beings that live to create misery for others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have staff do an anonymous survey and have them name names of those individuals that are a destructive force for morale.

I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The patients are very appreciative of you help.

    Cons

My nursing supervisor played favorites with her nurse practitioners and wrote you up if you were not her "pet." I have been a nurse practitioner for 30 years and have never had negative reviews from any supervisor except at Planned Parenthood. Many nurse practitioners, including myself, were forced to quit because of her prejudices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your nurse practitioners not just the nurse supervisors! Go to the clinics and see your nurses in action and then pass judgement.

I have been working at Planned Parenthood full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Doctors and nurses are dedicated and committed, a wonder to watch, the level of care is amazing

    Cons

In a word, management. Empire building to the detriment of the mission. Favoritism is a real problem, allowing some people to set their own agenda. Few projects are followed through to completion

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better communication between departments would be a good start. More realistic time lines for projects and more equitable treatment of employees.

I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time

    Pros

Working directly with the people receiving the services and being part of a bigger picture in the reproductive rights movement.

    Cons

Majority of senior management (with the exception of the CEO, COO and Medical director) was lazy and incompetent, looking for ways to cut corners and meet deliverables on paper. Toxic work environment where people were looking out for themselves and not the bigger picture. There is a huge pay discrepancy between senior management and everyone else.

Unfortunate that Arizonans are stuck with this affiliate.

I worked at Planned Parenthood part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The pay is competitive. Planned Parenthood facilities are managed under an affiliate system. So if you're not in Arizona it could be much better.

    Cons

There is a good deal of secrecy and cronyism among the upper management in the Arizona affiliate. I worked there for less than 2 years. In that time, I had 3 different supervisors. The turnover among upper management is scarily high. People disappear from the company in groups as high as 5 employees at a time. There is little explanation about turnover or plans for the company. It is generally a stressful job as it is due to the political climate in AZ. Add the items I've described above and it's a recipe for misery.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate honestly about your strategic plan. Your CEO and CFO need to look beyond their own interests and stick with a medical director. Perhaps, then you won't have to switch strategic directions every 6 months. Stop saying you prefer to promote from within if you're just going to pass over qualified internal applicants. And stop pretending to value your employees. Your bottom line is hurting because your employees are miserable. Your recruitment and on-boarding costs must be through the roof. With that in mind, your HR Director is extremely unprofessional. Act in accordance with your stated values.

I have been working at Planned Parenthood full-time

    Pros

Provides great service for community. Doctors are amazing.

    Cons

50% turnover rate. Constant firings. Does not invest in its people as they are quick to let go good employees. It has created an environment of fear and sabotage. Yet the administration looks the other way - shameful. Don't walk but run away from this place. Very scary what goes on here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide some managerial training to senior leadership that hire and fire health center staff and start acting in ways that support your values and mission statement. There is a climate of fear that if removed could be a great long term place to work.

I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    - Great mission
    - Opportunities to work on both non-profit and advocacy

    Cons

    - Disorganization beyond belief
    - Catty girls club
    - Socialization between employees and their superiors is not professional
    - Shady hiring practices
    - No talking between departments
    - Employees have been in their positions forever with no actual output
    - Wasteful with funds
    - Pathetic IT support
    - Poor treatment and respect of affiliates
    - Too many contractors!! Stop hiring like crazy when you outsource some of the most important work at an expensive fee!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Treat the people who have actual output of work product well
    - Hire efficient people who have a proven output of work and aren't there solely because they care about the mission
    - Just because someone has been in their position forever doesn't mean that they are actually good at it
    - Get organized and departments working with one another
    - Run more like a business in DC and New York offices and less like a non-profit

    Pros

    Learn to deal with people.
    Patience is exercised.
    Workers are nice.

    Cons

    8 hour shift standing outside.
The office is hard to get to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more reasonable work days. You say part time but to do that you have to literally dedicate every weekend and can't work half days and that is hard to do. Not only that your office is in a bad neighborhood and is hard to get to if you don't have a car.

    I worked at Planned Parenthood

    Pros

    The name is well respected.

    Cons

The culture is not inclusive of diverse experiences, mindsets or skills. Its an 'old girl's club' where friendships and personal interactions are valued over work performance. There is little accountability on the expenditures at the Federation. Wasteful reimbursement/spending practices, especially with so-called telecommuters. Suspicious hiring practices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many managers lack the skills to lead, support positive change or enhance productivity. Many have bounced around to different affiliates and promoted for the purpose of getting rid of 'problem employees'.
