Great mission, hard work, low pay

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Boston, MA

ProsThe mission and the services we provide to our patients. When a patient is really grateful, it makes it all worth it. The hours can be flexible to accommodate child-care, vacations, and schooling.

ConsSalary is NOT competitive with other health care fields. Communication has become more transparent, but it could improve.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the line workers! Provide room for career growth!

Upper management made it a disappointing experience....

Family Planning RN (Former Employee) Yakima, WA

    ProsGood schedule flexibility
    Good benefits
    Good co-workers

ConsPoorly qualified and trained upper management

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure a clinic manager and upper level executivez are properly trained and qualified for the position.....not just promoted because of tenure or who the know.

It was a good place to learn and grow skills.

Development Associate (Former Employee) Chicago, IL

ProsLots of opportunities to help on projects, work independently and good feedback.

ConsBecause it's a nonprofit salary and pay of course aren't spectacular but that's to be expected.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncentivize workers to stay longer

    Registered Nurse

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGood first job. Friendly, quirky staff

ConsPay is the lowest for nurses I have ever seen. Ever. So there is a high turnover.
Nurses are basically medication pushers and hand holders. The medical assistants get more responsibility than the nurses.

    An great stepping stone

Health Center Assistant (Current Employee) Raleigh, NC

ProsInteresting environment where you will learn a lot about women's health and sexual health in general. Never boring or lack of tasks to complete. Newly upgraded electronic health system. Offers health benefits. Opportunities to grow within the company. Working for a great cause and a wonderful mission. Feels like you have made a difference in the community even if in the smallest of ways.

ConsLack of training to newly hired employees has become an issue in the last year. The company is currently in the process of building a training system for new employees but currently there is no formal training program. Decisions can take months to decide due to board members needing to approve every decision.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Not fun to work hard and passionately to be met by negativity and lack of appreciation

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Saint Louis, MO

ProsImportant work with an unconventional structure, decent pay and hours, diverse employee-base. The potential to be a great place to work is there.

ConsTotal lack of accountability within upper-management, the exclusive use of negative-reinforcement when disciplining, terrible organization. It varies greatly from affiliate to affiliate, but at my affiliate there is a lack of valuation for employees which leads to terrible morale and high turn-over which is attributed to both people being fired for petty/political reasons and people quitting.

Advice to Senior ManagementFoster a better environment, focus more on organization, and use positive reinforcement. The only way you will improve the work environment and your precious "productivity" is by building solid teams who have the motivation to make the improvements that are dictated, not presented. Your employees do not respect you, at all.

PPPSW is an emotionally immature organization with a contradictory culture

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe benefits - alternate workweek, vacation, sick and 401K - are better than the industry standards. The passion of the workforce for its mission is inspiring but that tends to enable a huge inconsistency in accountability for performance.

ConsThe organization is just now developing structures and systems to measure and hold all employees, not just front line, accountable for performance. It was constantly disheartening to meet deadlines, be on time for meetings and complete projects in agreed-upon timelines only to have to wait until others did the same. And then not be given appreciation for doing it. Secondly, health benefits were abysmal unless you opted for Kaiser and dependent coverage was unaffordable for the majority of employees. For a healthcare organization, that is unforgivable.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your act together and hold each other accountable for the basics: making timely decisions, defining and measuring KPIs.

    Terrible management and favoritism.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsI worked there because I believed in their mission and the right to affordable woman's healthcare.

ConsManagement is rude and plays favorites. If they have any issues with you, they don't care about who's around when they confront you. They will call you out in front of everyone. And there are ton's of double standards.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat every employee equally despite their qualification differences.
