I have been working at Planned Parenthood full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I think that the mission is great and the I think that the staff gets along very good. The hours are ok.

    Cons

I think that management treats their employees horribly, you feel as is at any moment you could be fired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your employees with the respect they deserve.

    "Almost Humanitarian."

    I worked at Planned Parenthood

    Pros

This is a job that anyone with a clean record can get, which is good for low income people looking for a foothold. The pay isn't bad either.

    Cons

The quotas get in the way of actively working to convey Planned Parenthood's message. The metrics for success and failure are based on some prearranged system that borders on determinism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find new metrics for success and aim to hire like minded over easy labor.

I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits package and competitive salaries (if you can make the case for yourself). Coworkers are wonderful, and the mission is a great one.

    Cons

Terrible work-life balance, especially on the c4 side. Increasing overemphasis on the advocacy work, and decreased focus on the health delivery work. The leadership is disorganized, and spends a lot of time spinning its wheels and trying new initiatives that don't pan out. Incredibly high turnover, especially among younger employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too many cooks in the kitchen!

I worked at Planned Parenthood full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Smart, committed people; a lot of talent; beautiful space; good benefits; decent salaries. Gym in the building.

    Cons

Not a lot of diversity. The national office is not reflective of the diversity on their doorstep. Few people of color in senior leadership positions (other than Dr. Cullins). The President seems to be unable or unwilling to see that this is an issue and not make a long-term commitment to change it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to be relevant for the long-term, not just for right now. Do more outreach and cultivation of people of color and not the usual suspects (e.g., white, female college grads who can afford to volunteer for you for free).

I have been working at Planned Parenthood full-time

    Pros

I leave every day feeling good that I'm contributing to my community. Also, my coworkers are amazingly supportive.

    Cons

Of course, it's a non-profit, so pay is is markedly lower than than the for profit sector. Also, work is high stress, especially in public-facing positions.

I have been working at Planned Parenthood full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You'll know your work has a direct positive impact.
There is a culture of knowledge and resource sharing among affiliates

    Cons

Seniority is valued over skill set
Too much of the clinic workload is dumped on the lowest paid center assistants.
Just about everyone works unpaid overtime to keep up
Zero work life balance - people run themselves into the ground due to unrealistic workload expectations - the burn-out rate is alarming.
Extremely meeting-heavy, often meetings are poorly structured and much time is wasted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn more about your staff and their unique skills, strengths and interests
Leadership trainings for all employees would be a very valuable investment

I have been working at Planned Parenthood part-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Super dedicated co-workers. Often giving information and health care to people with little or no access to any other care, including education.

    Cons

Corporate patriarchy has taken over and it's really messy in a matriarchal organization......

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get some leadership training! Managers boss people around and use fear to keep their employees in check, leadership takes on tasks when it gets busy and leads by example. If your staff has more education than you do, check yourself for intimidation, go back to school if you need to. Know the history of your organization, take a women's herstory class. Bring herstory to staff meetings.
