I have been working at Plexus full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good work-life balance; benefits are good. Employees are trained well. Supervision is visible and approachable.

    Cons

Career advancement is iffy, depends on if there's a position open at the time. It seems that the company values certain positions over others. Compensation is below average. My manager doesn't meet with me on a consistent basis - too busy, and I don't know how I'm doing at my job until review time. Even if management says you're doing a great job and you're rated well, the raises are disappointing - less than 3%. If your are unemployed and need a job, this is a fairly good place to be. But if you're looking to advance your career, you might want to go somewhere else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend consistent time with employees; talk more about job and career issues. At least give good raises (> 4%) for doing jobs well.

I worked at Plexus full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The pay was great for someone at my level. I continually got raises, and was able to negotiate a raise for a lateral move.

    Cons

The environment can be difficult for a woman; working on a manufacturing floor requires conservative dress, otherwise men think they can harass you!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work on ensuring that employees have work life balance; there are some accounts that are very important for the company and at particular work sites, but everyone needs a break once in a while.

    Pros

Wonderful coworkers who truly care about each other and the company.

    Cons

Too many demands of an all ready over burdened staff - both internal and external.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest in the interview so the candidate knows what the job will be. Don't sugar coat it.

    Pros

A good stable company to work for. There is room for advancement

    Cons

There are a lot of politics to deal with. Not good work/life balance. Most managers are quite good, but there are a few that are terrible.

I worked at Plexus full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Fast paced environment, leading edge technology, global travel opportunities. Customers are top players in their industries. Facilities are new, headquarters office is like a palace.

    Cons

Feast or famine, there's either too much business or not enough. Extreme business cycles. Engineers are highly favored, non-engineers are second class citizens. Lots of hiring, then purges.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a well rounded management team with a variety of backgrounds and experiences, instead of only promoting the folks with design engineering backgrounds.

I have been working at Plexus full-time

    Pros

A strong culture of continuous improvement and, once a driver for change is accepted, a solid commitment to implement.

    Cons

It can be a challenging industry to work in, with production so closely tied to specific customer demand. This can lead to cycles of, at times, aggressive changes in the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quite a number of initiatives seem to remain open for lengthy time periods. Perhaps greater emphasis full implementation in shorter time periods would benefit the company.

I have been working at Plexus full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good people to work with as peers. Some management is good others liars and crap people.

    Cons

Depending on what site you are at in some you are expected to eat, breath and live Plexus. Others are normal. Leadpeople are unempowered supervisors who have to deal with 50% idiotiotic hourly staff who cant put their pants on with work instructions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Live what you say, instead of being two faced liars.

I have been working at Plexus full-time

    Pros

There are many very smart people at Plexus, many of whom pour their heart and soul into their work. These people are a joy to work with.

    Cons

Severe cost cutting (layoffs) have left many groups, such as IT, very short-handed. It does not appear that this will be changing in the near future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop worrying solely about the current stock price and focus on the 5, 10 and 20 year picture.

Former Employee - Production/Hand Soldering in Nampa, ID
Former Employee - Production/Hand Soldering in Nampa, ID

    I worked at Plexus

    Pros

They do provide paid training for hand soldering IPC-610 requirements. We had a meeting where management announced record profits for the year, but nobody was getting a pay increase. 'Snicker".

    Cons

Production work is subject to what contracts are available, so you can be sent home for weeks at a time, then called back, etc. If a part is out of stock, the line will be shut down, for example. The 12 hour shifts are horrible and monotonous. Grouchy coworkers can be a downer as they often do sloppy work. This is the nature of entry-level work, and it's hard to pay your rent this way. Hewlett-Packard was about the same in the 1990's as well as other companies in the Boise area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thank you for NOT outsourcing everything like HP and other companies have been doing. Good luck with this cutthroat industry. A small pay increase would help immensely and probably cut down on the number of careless defects I saw.
