    Pros

Nationally know fashion store with spectacular products. Well respected by people who are not aware of the atmosphere behind the scenes.

    Cons

Poor leadership, lack of support, and discrimination runs rampant in the stores. Upper management doesn't care or doesn't believe the employees. But then doing only 1-2 store visits per year is no way to really see what's going on. Store directors harass, bully, and discriminated against employees. She also tried to inflict religious beliefs and made life miserable for you if you were not on the same side politically.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a higher awareness of the day to day activity in the stores. Just blindly believing the store director is a horrible and irresponsible practice. When I brought the harassment and the fact that I was being bullied at work to the regional manager, she told the store director and I was in even more hot water and my life was a living hell. Dumb!

I worked at Polo Ralph Lauren full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great discount, company has a reputable name to use for future references. Well established brand, easy to sell the product.

    Cons

Bad management team, unprofessional HR department. Inconsistent with rules, regulations, hard to work on commission fairly. Unprofessional associates. Bad compensation for the amount of work required for the job. Fluctuating pay checks. Not reliable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time off polices are inconsistent. Floor management is poorly organized. Wardrobing is required but sales associates make little to afford the required clothing. Upper management and regional management are kept in the dark about serious sales professional issues. Everything has a false front and isn't how it seems. Stores have a low retention rate keeping associates.

I worked at Polo Ralph Lauren full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Loved the employee discount and the majority of people who work there!

    Cons

Lots of spend in ridiculous areas - very antiquated IT systems that caused a loss of productivity. Very little on-going maintenance support for a bunch of their stuff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to EVERYONE. Just because you hire an "expert" doesn't mean they know everything! People down the chain should have a voice, be informed and...be heard. Don't just sweep the bad employee reviews under the rug. Also, implement career pathing. Some groups did it very well others, not so much.

    Pros

the product and discount were nice

    Cons

compensation was all over the place. as the assistant manager of hr it was very easy to determine other managers pay. my salary was far less than others in the same position. I asked for fair compensation several times and was told no.

Current Employee - Sales Associate/Cashier in Alpine, CA

I have been working at Polo Ralph Lauren part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

General retail sales environment. Stock process is fairly efficient and allows for expedient inventory flow. Quick on boarding and recently renovated PoS.

    Cons

Inefficient scheduling and hypersensitivity to the possibility of overtime. Commonly schedules employees for 4 hours shifts at a time, and generally schedules have 5-7 days a week. Lunch breaks were a common deterrent for management to give employee's proper shift durations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Confer with trusted employees and better manage the schedule. Help employee's maintain a good work life balance.

Former Employee - Assistant Manager in Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Polo Ralph Lauren full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The employee discount on merchandise is generous. Every month associates can purchase up to 5 items of their choice at 50% off , as part of their personal wardrobe. The hours are flexible, and the atmosphere is friendly. Training is provided, even for the inexperienced, as long as you embody good customer service skills and behaviors, this retail gig is easy.

    Cons

Benchmarking associates is just a term they use when they deliver performance appraisals. When it comes time to fill internal positions, most often they hire external candidates. General managers don't mentor the ASM team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

General managers should trust and allow their ASMs to run their specific departments as smaller units of a store. Lead by example by working side by side with them, rather than riding on the ASM team's contribution. This consistent behavior will change the negative office culture and the store's depressing morale into a positive environment built on trust and collaboration.
